Geez guys....I guess that was friendly enough! I am with the Windows 7 and 8 firewalls. Third party firewalls to me are a complete pia. I loved Sygate because it was easy to work with and didn't nag me all the time then Symantec bought it and killed it and I tried every other one and there were just too many issues, though admittedly that was many years ago. I just tried the leak test and failed also. But nothing wold make me go back to all the networking issues and nag messages I had in the past. I am going to put MBam back and see if that warns of that.

While I don't use SpinRite I do use hard Drive Regenerator and have saved info from a lot of bad hard drives with it so I am a believer. I also have not been to Gibson's site for a while, but I used to be a regular. I think I'll run Shields Up again for "S_its and Giggles".

Mike, for $20 you can get all kinds of password recovery disks that allow you to remove the password from Windows and even though you are part time in this, you still should have one of these.

Maybe the actual power button is the issue, I would check it out and all the wires attached including jumper to the motherboard.

The dvd drive could be bad or dying Mike. BTW you did hold out the cmos battery right? That could have reset the bios so there may be a perfectly valid reason everything now works.Let them run it until it dies it may be fine.

Is Windows on the installed hard drive because if it is it should be plugged into Sata 0 Mike. Sounds like mobo if no bios and no boot to cd on that age pc. Have you tried pulling the cmos battery out for 5 minutes and/or pulling and switching the cmos jumper and then returning it to reset the bios? If you cannot get into bios, where are you reading those 4 sata entries because you also should be seeing dvd drive as one of them. Maybe that drive is shot as well or cable is shot.

Wait that counts...you have had Norton repel something? That definitely counts. In fact you are the first person I have ever known that saw Norton do anything but update. Do you happen to remember how many times and what it repelled. This is important!

I know I should have explained better Dougie. Booting to the Kickstart then mallows you to boot into Windows bypassing the MBR if that is the problem and then run Hitman Pro whether you have used it before or not so one could actually do that just to use it even when the MBR is not the problem. That is all I was saying.

OK thanks for that I am glad to know there is another way Pete, that is actually encouraging and yes Kickstart is way quicker...but who knows if it will always work either.
