N3 I cannot get that url to work at all. Redirecting is not normal though unless the site you are trying to get to has changed its location ands you aren't aware of that.

The download speed is the worst I have ever heard for cable N3, have you checked what speeds they claim to be offering with them and I agree with Bob the upload is really bad also? Are there maybe tiers of speed that you pay different prices for?

Yes I know that about Verizon but actually he hadn't been to Verizon yet until this morning as he had been using Outlook Express and was waiting to ask me how to access it which of course I didn't realize and I explained to him this morning OE is dead and told him how to go to Verizon to access Web Mail.

I sold a guy a refurbished PC last night. I had just run a Mbam scan and updated Windows updates before he picked it up and there was no bloatware on it at all. He calls me this AM with all kinds of popups out of control. He went to eBay and the Pottsville Republican Newspaper website and Wot went off there but I had forgotten to explain that to him. I had him change his home page from the newspaper and we uninstalled Optimizer Pro, Driver something or other tzvardzik search engine (something like that) and one more of those Malware enabler programs from Programs and Features. A complete scan with Malwarebytes removed 660 Pups. An hour later he called back still getting popups so we installed Emsisoft Antimalware 9.0 and removed a Trojan and 4 more exploits and 112 more pups and it is finally clear. All the guy did was go to read his newspaper and look for a car part on ebay, and spent a total of 19 minutes on the computer before all this happened. So what is on the box really has so little to do with it and I should add he is on Verizon DSL and no other devices use the internet in his home so no infection traveled across a network from another computer in the home.

ECC registered memory is very expensive unlike non ecc and unregistered however not that expensive. And I did run my IBM server with regular non ecc 8 Gb Ddr2 667 ram for years without issue. It still runs I just wanted something faster. I really should look into hosting as I have a HP Proliant server I can't sell with dual Xeon Core 2 duo cpus and 32 Gb ram and the old Lenovo with a Core 2 Duo and 8 Gb Ddr2 ram and both have 15,000 Rpm SAS drives as well, and I have spare SAS drives too...all in the graveyard (my closet). I guess I would need bigger drives to do that as one is 256 Gb and the other 512 Gb SAS drives. What could I service on that little space. I don't even know how big web servers usually are though. I paid $185 for my 16 gb 1600 Ddr3 ECC Registered server ram at Crucial, I am a reseller there but we don't get much of a price break frankly.

If you have been off the forum for a while, these alerts cover the whole left side of the screen when you first come in and that is super annoying! I would do away with them, unless that could be somehow curtailed.

OK that is what I thought and if you add in most have their memory maxed on servers, then we may never notice it is a bit slower than if we used Non ECC memory because we use so much memory on the server. I know the error checking does take away from speed, funny thing is I remember using ECC memory from time to time years ago on desktops and never really saw any errors that saved as I never really have had but 1 bad ram situation over the years where I actually had a bad stick of ram influencing a system that took quite a while to spot. It is easy to spot when the system fails to boot or runs all screwy but one bad among 3 good, not really so easy to spot.

One thing I have never understood maybe Bob can explain. I have always known that ECC registered ram is the best for a server but never knew why?

Yes please never feel embarrassed cook, we were all there once and forums are about users helping users not gurus condescending to give of their time if you get my drift. Your problems refresh us and keep us up to date with what is going on in today's computer world so believe it or not you actually help us by bringing up your issues. As Bob said and I always say "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask"! I was part of a radio help desk show many years ago and we used to say that once an hour.

Shortordercook, I think there is a big difference between a server with 2 Zeon quad core cpus, 32 Gb ram a 850 watt psu and 4 SAS 15000 rpm hard drive and a desktop. This server was quite capable of heating a room even in this winter whereas a desktop unlikely would come anywhere near it in usage.

I never overclock anything personally with the exception of my current desktop where I have 2166 ram that the board supposedly takes without overclocking and yet it shows as 1600 no matter what I did so I finally decided to overclock it and stop being annoyed by it.
