Dougie I get what you are saying as there is a certain paranoia out there which gets really annoying where the user gets so involved with prevention of issues, they don't go anywhere and I agree with you. For the paranoids, let them live with Sandboxie and I don't know how many used this but I beta tested it for a while with a testing company and finally it got to me and I had to bow out of the test because I couldn't stand moving that slowly....I preferred infection to the cure!

Let's get this straight OK? Windows 8 has integrated Adobe Flash Player into Windows and into IE. Not some other version of Flash. Adobe is there and is embedded so no reason to install it and Bob if you mare using Windows 8 then you are using Adobe Flash Player unless you are using Firefox and didn't install it to FF. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/05/windows-8-will-integrate-include-adobe-flash/ Google Chrome also has always carried with its install Adobe Flash Player so again no need to install it to Chrome it is already there. Chrome also has Java built into it and auto updates itself and same. https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-google-chrome.html I know many people fear Chrome because of its association with Google but I have to say of all the browsers, and this is my opinion only, I have less issues with Chrome than any other. I was a long time FF user and still use Pale Moon as a backup browser and like it a lot, but most 64 bit versions of Windows have been plagued with Java and Flash issues since day 1 and I am not yet convinced those issues are over, but most websites today use either Adobe Flash Player and/or Java and Chrome does work better with those than any other in my estimation and what I like the most is you never see the upgrades as they are automatic so if you do, you are most likely seeing the Malware versions if you are on Chrome. The one thing I believe but cannot find where I read it is that the Fake "Flash Player" does not say Adobe so I am not quite sure where you are showing it with Adobe in it donatao unless that has changed recently.

Me neither thanks Gimbo.

Yeah me too I run mostly ssd drives myself, I was just surprised you had trouble removing O&O as I don't remember an issue but what happened, happened obviously.
-
Wow I used O&O years ago that was a decent program. Well I used O&O Defragger.
-
I just spent an extra hour getting rid of the remnants of Spy Hunter. How could anyone think that is a useful program? Yeah this one made a lot of money for "the dark side", Dougie.
-
Yeah this one really is the scariest thing we have ever faced and what makes it so scary is there are still not real 100% cures and we are nearing 2 years since its inception.
-
As long as that hard drive is offline you are ok but remember 2 things. Crypto Locker travels across a network at great speeds and as soon as you restore your image file it can also be encrypted unless the virus is completely gone. I would low level format the drive before even trying a restore.
-
Hitman Pro though is a good product Dougie and actually probably the best one against the Crypto Lockker group. I do feel it is very thorough in some areas but not yet a really complete product in my estimation, but a good component of an arsenal of different products nevertheless.
-
Funny I just decided to try Spy Hunter maybe because Gimbo said he uses it the other night and I have to agree it is rubbish and after claiming to find all sorts of things and you need to buy it to remove them. When you refuse and uninstall it offers to sell it to you for $10. Hell WOT went off when I went to the site to begin with.
-
I have been using that as well Pete lately as it seems lately some of the Malware Removal I have done has been quite destructive and I am starting to try to narrow in on which product is causing this. yesterday i.e. no doubt it was "Hitman Pro" that crippled a system removing an MBR rootkit.
-
Well that really is not correct donetao about Emsisoft because even the name belies that: "Emsisoft AntiMalware", is actually the name of the product. "Emsisoft Antivirus & Anti-Malware, all-in-one. Cleaning up after malware is hard work. That’s why you need an anti-malware that’s powerful, but not at the cost of efficiency." - See more at: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/#sthash.tx3iVMkC.dpuf

Me neither. We used to update the minute they came out with new ones but that was many hosed Windows systems ago and now I update a driver when I have an issue and a solution I know fixes that issue only. According to "Bleeping Computer", my bible on these issues, if you need a driver, go to the mfgr's website and get it yourself and do not use driver updaters...but here read it for yourself: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/508856/slimdrivers-is-it-safe-to-use/

File Hippo is also safe as a third part download site. Someone mentioned Cnet being the worst and it is now really bad as are Brothersoft, Softpedia, and Softonic. Starbuck is so right as we could eliminate so much Malware if we could end these damn sites.
-
Thanks for clearing all that up Starbuck and as you know I am one who will definitely back you up on both Mbam issues as well as the scarcity of virus but let's make one point stand out better. Folks all the infections collectively are Malware and a virus as Starbuck said is also technically Malware. We have a tendency to use the word Malware meaning what we used to call Spyware actually. Antivirus programs while they specifically moderate virus and Trojans have always had a certain amount of heuristic ability to remove other than specifically identified infections but rather behavior. The Anti Malware programs never had that in the past as so they typically removed only what they could identify from their definitions. Malwarebytes and Emsisoft more so though do have some heuristic ability as well. With Antivrus programs we were always trying to use one product for everything but as Starbuck points out very little of what we see today are real virus so those products have been trying to further develop their heuristic abilities but unfortunately really are still little or no protection. Donateo my remarks are strictly professional based on my experiences cleaning client computers which I do 52 weeks out of the year and I have noticed Malwarebytes not as effective as it used to be as have many techs I work with. While you are entitled to your opinions on what you see and do, you are not entitled to question what I see and do or demand proof of same though if you would like to come up to Pa and come out in the field with me anytime you want to, I will more than gladly show you what I am talking about. Malwarebytes resellers are leaving that company in droves as I did because just at the time that they raised the price of their product 100%, other products were outperforming them. Would it surprise you to know that the largest Malwarebytes reseller in North America is not only no longer selling Mbam, but is actually representing Emsisoft for North America. He also recently told me he has been signing up Avast resellers also in droves as well lately.

Those who know me know I frequently forget to add the smilies....You all took me seriously and I was kidding! As a rule I do avoid freebies whereas I know most of you will move heaven and earth to find them, but there is a handful of them I do use.
-
Do you have Java and Adobe Flash player installed into Pale Moon and FF?
-
Oh everything can't be free, except infections that is that come from most freebies!
-
Is your PC infected--Are you ready for any diaster??
Rich-M replied to donetao's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
Of course you can ask that is why we are here. -
Yes I am saying it is not as good as it used to be and is slipping. I have also had it fail to pick up many common Malware issues including various Trojans and noticed a while ago it seldom removed Antivirus 2014 any more either last year. It certainly cannot be used as a standalone against all Malware since it seems to remove less and less. I personally no longer use it for anything and I am a reseller. It also does not prevent Crypto Locker so I would never leave it alone against that kind of threat and that is one of the reasons I moved on to Emsisoft which does prevent Crypto Locker. Nod32 Antivirus also says it does.

Yeah running checkdisk these days is not for maintenance and especially not for Ssd drives unless there is an issue.
