  1. One of my favorites....couldn't catch this again in a million years if I tried!!!
  2. I could not agree more and I hate to give up on it although I had a Lenovo I bought for $97 with free freight on eBay that I ran for 8 years without a spec of trouble. It was a bit noisy though. Actually a funny story where I bought it thinking it was a desktop which is the way it was listed. When I opened it up and looked at the 15000 RPM SAS hard drives I had never even heard of and then noticed server version of Windows I couldn't believe the buy I got....I pitched my NAS drive I had been using and set it up the right way. But like I said it runs fine so I hate to pitch it but the cost of shipping it would outweigh anything I could get for it, but it is absurd to live with this thing with about 120 Gb of meaningful data on it. I am excited to try the Ssd drives though because I suspect the HP would be faster if I used standard enterprise hard drives. I was toying with the idea of running Raptor Enterprise drives at 10,000 Rpm as they are not much more money than regular enterprise drives. And of course I haven't placed the ram yet I could go to 32 Gb but am not convinced I would see any real difference.
  3. I have been convinced my old HP Proliant server with 2 Core2Duos @ 2.4 Ghz and 32Gb 667Ddr2 ram has sent my electric bill through the roof for several years now. In the summer it heats the entire room it's in and makes it tough for the AC to even work in that room so I decided I don't need that furnace any more.It will be fun getting rid of it as I cannot lift it. This little unit weighing 18lbs vs the 89 lb barn burner with a bit of work not only will let the room cool, but it takes up less than half the space and in a 2 BR condo on a slab, every inch is necessary. I put this in the Promotional Forum but here are the stats: Lenovo ThinkServer TS140 70A4001MUX Intel Xeon E3-1225 v3 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 5U Tower Server Desktop PC Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1225 v3 Quad Core Processor (8M Cache, 3.2 GHz) 84W RAM: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz ECC RAM | Supports up to 32GB RAM (4 x DIMM Sockets) Hard Drive: 500GB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive | Supports up to 4 x 3.5" Hard Drives Optical Drive: Slim DVD-ROM Drive Included | Operating System: NONE Included. 1-Year Limited Onsite Manufacturer Warranty I am going to run it with a 240 Gb Ssd for Windows Server and a 256 Ssd for files I access and leave the 500 Gb hard drive for real storage. Add in 16 Gb Crucial 1600 ECC Ddr3 ram for $175 and I am off to the races. I figure if it doesn't give me what I need in the cpu I can up it later as I see it takes i-3 and i-5 cpus anyway.
  4. This is a screaming buy for a low priced small business server. Everywhere else I looked it is a minimum $200 more. 5. I know that N3, I was just mentioning that you reminded me of that one when we were chatting the other day.
  6. N3 and I were talking the other day on Paltalk and he also uses Duck Duck Go as a searchg engine and I used that for a while also and liked it as I felt it was cleaner than Google. My problem with most of the other search engines is they just don't find the breadth of things that Google does and I always wind up going back.
  7. Looks all the same here....let us know if you are aware of any new features.

  11. Definitely true that over 1 gb there is little stability in any hard drives. Now remember Hitachi is no Toshiba but I have had little trouble with either of those. I seldom go away from WD but those are the ones I sometimes do and again I have yet to see a bad one. I would think this is personal except most people have had multiple issues with Seagate drives if you spend much time on forums.
  12. That's amazing Gimbo as I have the exact opposite experience where every single Seagate drive I used 2 years ago came back dead and I have only ever replaced one WD. Now go back a few years WD had some bad series and I remember the drives were all black and I had a lot of trouble with those. Then I am doing really well with Crucial Ssd drives and the reviews are terrible. They are the best ones I have used and every one of them is still in use the oldest being over 3 years now. I am still curious to see if I get 10 years out of any of them but based on what I have read it is more than possible.
  13. Wow that is seriously interesting Gimbo. I am going to be redoing mine shortly as I practically stole an AMD FM2+ 7850k Apu I am going to switch into my unit and then take my 7700k with another Msi board as I have another MSI A78M-E35 Socket FM2 board I got as an open box really cheaply to use for a client build so I'll switch the drives around then and clean up the rest of the wires. If I am not too busy I'll take a few more photos.
  14. Awesome looking and yikes gotta be fast. Nice and clean inside to put me to shame...I love the case and colors especially. What are all the buttons on top of the case. I can't quite see them.
  15. Really good point Catch as I had a bunch of Gigabyte boards last year that required bios updates for the Usb 3.0 ports to work and there would have been no other way to get that far. I always use Ps2 ports if available as I have never been a big fan of Usb devices. I painfully had to let go of my 1394 devices when they became harder and harder to find but my early external drives all had 1394 and Usb connections. I even have an 800 1394 drive around here somewhere, that went the way of the Edsel.
  16. I see what you are saying Gimbo it just feels backwards to me but starting to make sense. I think Catch22 tried to tell me that also.
  17. Are you saying they need to face backwards Gimbo? They would be pretty far away from the cable ports. I must apologize for those awful photos BTW and took a lot of heat over them. I replaced the psu and ran 1/2 the cables behind the case to clean it up and the SSD drive fits fine pushed farther in and its the full size drive that had the issue now. I mounted it further into the framework and used only 1 screw on each side and I can fit the side on the case fine now. But you think they shiould be reversed. Next time I open that case I will look at it better.
  18. I know you do realize the Usb 3.0 is blank
  19. Well they are coming down nicely. I can't wait either for the big ones to drop substantially in price.
  20. We all know the frustration that comes with plugging in a USB device. It seems like no matter how hard we try, it can take up to 5 tries to put the stupid thing in and personally I always thought the problem was pebkac (problem exists between the keyboard and the chair for those who don't know). This year at CES, the producers behind USB are making a strong effort to simply this little and useful device. Dubbed USB Type-C or USB 3.1, the group showcased some prototypes with this new device in how it is faster ( up to 10 gbps), stronger, and easier. Much emphasis has been placed on making the port itself sturdier and better able to take more frequent device removal than current plugs. USB Type-C is a reversible connection that can be used from either side. Moreover, the new connector can be plugged into the device in any direction, gone are the days of getting it wrong on the first shot. I sure hope this speed is noticeable because I don't know about anyone else but the incredible speed I saw between Usb 1.1 and 2,0 I see no where around Usb 3.0. We first saw this type of strange connector on the newer iOS devices with Apple’s Lighting Connector and how it can be plugged in using any direction. Furthermore, this new increase of speed will now allow USB to compete against Intel’s Thunderbolt. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/09/reversible-tiny-faster-hands-on-with-the-usb-type-c-plug/
  21. Thanks but believe it or not I could have done that with my pathetic skills on this software, I just wanted to see if anyone agreed so I guess you do!:ouch:
  22. I saw this on TSF and what an awesome chart. I feel like we should make this a sticky!
