I agree EVGA are the best cards for Nvidia chips, and I knew that was over Gimbo,

That makes 3 of us! This is an exciting period of time!

Now wait a minute. Today this would never fly though technically there is nothing wrong with it shame on a mfgr for doing that when they have the resources to not. The only thing this means is that both sticks will work at the lower speed technically and all boards worked within the range of 1 speed down or up as was standard practice. If the ram is mismatched it is because the cas latency is wrong, Ecc wrong or density wrong which has nothing to do with the speed of the ram. Another reason why it is tough to do this today is newer hardware is way more demanding and often will reject new ram that is even the same model number but from a different batch( because there may be a different mfgr of one or the other) but in the era of your desktop there this could easily have worked, and I had been known to do that when resources were short to me, but I would correct it later if I had the opportunity.

What’s The Difference Between Linux and Windows?
Rich-M replied to allheart55 Cindy E's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
It is possible especially with Microsoft plans to sell you what you need after Windows 10. They are on a suicide mission as far as I can see. And I see no desktop slide in fact I see a return to desktops in my own business. Last year was my best year by far overall and in desktop sales and yet laptop sales were one of the worst years since I have been doing this. -
I haven't heard any rumbling of plans on anything new from that corner.

OMG I knew there had to be a simple way and I Googled everything I could think of when I should have just pm'd you! I had to believe I could find a command that would take me to the Gui I'll be damned. It too me forever to find out what version allowed Workgroup in 2012 and once again I could have just asked you. Lesson know your resources!

Yeah Crucial has been changing numbers on its own for what it sells to make them different from the ones they wholesale out to resellers but that does look the same. It is not so important with ddr ram to have the exact model as it is today with Ddr3 and 4 which is getting fussier an fussier with ram for compatibility anyway. On new systems if I cannot match the exact models I either change the board if I can't find it exact or the ram.

I knew something was up as I was having issues all morning. Thanks for notice. -
Well I have been up and running for a day now and I am impressed. I am impressed first of all with Server 2012 which after my initial mistake where I had a choice of Core or Gui and chose the core and booted up to nowhere, I went back and reinstalled to Gui version and it went up like a dream with no real issues at all. I was happy to see that Classic Start Menu worked on this as I did not want to deal with Metro desktop after all I had gone through trying to use Server 2008 Standard. I had failed to note the write up had said 2008 R2 to 2012 compatible vServer versions only and when I did notice that, it was too late. 2008 standard did install but I could not get many drivers up and I could not get the ethernet which is the most important so that killed me there. I even tried to add an Intel Gigabit card to replace the built in Nic but it still would not install a driver even though I had the right driver. I had gotten chipset and Video drivers to install. The main reason I wanted to use 2008 Standard is I had crossed this bridge before and did not want to install to a domain as that would have meant installing domain users to all pcs on the network which is way too much work using 2008 R2 which is really Windows 7 and Standard is Vista. I read on the internet that 2012 Standard would install to a Workgroup so that was my next goal and as I said it went up with no real issues after my stupid choice of Core version. Fortunately I had that 2012 Standard version here or that would have wasted all kinds of time not to mention being a bit "pricey". Mapping my drives to the same drive letters avoided the need to reset all the keyboard hot keys and relocate all the stores in all my main programs so after the install which took about 30 minutes another half hour and I had everything going. Then an hour to drag "the beast" across the floor into a closet to find a temporary home for it until I figure what to do with it. The Lenovo unit with 16 gb ram and a 256 and 240 gb Ssd drives is impressively quiet as the fans and there are 3 of them I cannot even hear and of course they are the only mechanical parts so you can't hear a thing really. Considering the HP Proliant had 4 Sas 10,000 RPM hard drives, 2 XeonQuad Core cpus and 32 gb ram, This little server is way faster too and I noticed that right away. So far I have not seen any of the occasional freezes I was seeing with Outlook or QuickBooks where I did have to close and reopen the programs due to odd failures. It didn't happen that often but sure was annoying. I am anxiously awaiting my electric bill as I can tell by the heat in the room difference that I am sure to be right in that will go down big time. Marc at Emsisoft was delighted I contacted him for the Emsisoft Server Version and as usual provided free license for the unit as I am a reseller so that I can use that for Antimalware/Antivirus. MSE would install but would not update and the other various free Server Avs left a lot to be desired and server versions of Antivirus programs are 4-5 times what desktop versions cost. All in all this was a great move and I see no reason at all to think about 32 Gb ram. It has 4 slots so it would be no problem but I cannot imagine it being any faster.

What’s The Difference Between Linux and Windows?
Rich-M replied to allheart55 Cindy E's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
That is probably why I like it as that is what I am in Linux. -
That does sound good Dougie. Did that fix the problem (we were talking about this problem on Paltalk the other night.)?

What’s The Difference Between Linux and Windows?

I find it the most Windows like and it is my choice out in the field and in the shop to read off client files on dead systems. I never waste time converting Windows files to avoid passwords too, I just boot to Pc Linuc Live-cd.. -
You are right and for the average user it would be it. Remember though I make a lot of changes in a system but I also occasionally have to plug a client drive into a sata port too as the usb docks are not perfect and every so often I have a drive the docks won't read but my pc will. When I used to have a bench machine I never had to do that. On this system built about 2 months ago I upped the video card, added the soundcard and replaced a bad ssd drive in that time and I still have to replace the Ssd drive in it when I get another 256 in as I have a 3 year old 120 Gb Crucial in there that I replaced the corrupted PNY with and I used one of the drives I was going to do that with for the server so I am waiting for that replacement to come in from Tiger Direct as I do not want to put the PNY back in there. I will try that in another pc to find out why it failed. It could have been a bad install or clone as easily as a bad drive.

I have Windows 8 on my All-in-One but am not using Rapid mode. You know really when I took this Dell roadblock and switched the 1 Tb Seagate sata drive for the Ssd drive, I am still rocked by the difference and I did this months ago so I cannot imagine wanting anything to be faster. I can barely see the pages changing now. BTW the server with the two Ssd drives is blisteringly fast. I was going to up that to 32 Gb ram but I cannot figure out why I would do that.

No I did look but I would bet the gpu may have obscured it....I never got to look at it today as my ram came in for server so I had that nightmare instead. I failed to notice that this server starts with 2008R2 server OS and that one I cannot do Workgroup on and I owb 2008 Standard. Of course it installed but I could not get any drivers to get nic card going. Then I tried to add an Intel Gigbit Nic card bujt it was too old and I could not get that one in either. So after wasting all that time I had put away a version of 2012 R2 Standard which worked a treat once I finally chose the right version;.l Honestly I don't know why anyone has issue with that one. It tames as nicely as Windows 8 does. Real quiet with 2 ssd drives in. If it weren't for an occasional blinking light I would never know it is on. Thing is about 20% the size of "the HP beast", and I can carry it with 1 hand. The HP I need a fork lift for. Later tonight I migrate it over into network.

Yes I think the best way to utilize Live-cd is Puppy Linux because it has such a small footprint. My favorite installed OS is Pc Linux. -
The Worst Version of Windows Is…
Rich-M replied to allheart55 Cindy E's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
I liked Vista once the Service Packs came out though 7 runs a lot smoother. I vote Me the worst though 8 is so close to Me but Me had stability issues that topped everything. Windows 8 I would suggest for the poorest designed OS. -
I have a few Samsung 830's that are rock solid drives in use for a few years but not 850 Pros. I would personally be reluctant to use that mode Gimbo as I read all the hype but you know these drives are so fast to begin with, why screw with something that is so fast already sounds like looking for trouble though the hype suggests there should be absolutely no issues. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/downloads/document/Samsung_SSD_Rapid_Mode_Whitepaper_EN.pdf

I am looking for the viewpoint of our Security Moderators here. Last night on Paltalk, Dan , a self proclaimed Networking expert said that Server Operating Systems are immune to Crypto Locker type virus. He also said that in order for a file or folder on a server to be encrypted by the Crypto Locker Virus and its variants, the file has to be a shared file. This couuld be an important breakthrough because it would mean that files on a server that are not shared, would be protected so that doing a backup on the Server and not sharing the results would be a backup that could be on but is still safe. This could also mean that a file backup on a Nas drive could be on as long as it is not shared over a network making a live NAS drive another good possibility for safe backups from this virus. I currently do a backup several times a week and then turn off my Nas drive but since that backup is not mapped or shared, it might actually be quite safe.
