Problem with the reformat, after the first reformatting went to 100%, I am now seeing an error message that reads: Windows XP Professional Setup "The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing: Value O on the line in section [sourceDisksFiles] with key "SP1.cab." Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3" Any ideas what to do here guys?

Still didn't work, appreciate you trying to help Bob and yes, I have learned a lot from this but will go now and reformat, will post any questions concerning that in the other thread, thanks.

I don't know Bob, this is what they have on their site: "Using Rescue Disks Note: Rescue disks contain information specific to the computer they were created on. Attempting to use rescue disks on a computer other than the one they were created on could cause more damage to the machine." Since my software is considered a "discontinued" product by Norton, I have no phone or email support so I can't get any help from them, everything now seems to point to the fact that I will have to reformat and install an antivirus program for my cousin as you had suggested earlier, this pains me Bob, I saw this as a challenge, trying to get rid of the virus without reformatting so I guess I lost this battle, hopefully I'll win the others, :) appreciate the help as always!

Just went to the Norton site and what I see is that the "Rescue" disk has to be made on the pc without it being infected, what I'd like to ask now is if I can create this rescue disk on "another" pc and then use it back on the infected pc?

No, I have never made a boot disk but thanks for the advice, will attempt to do so now, is that possible? I will go to the Norton site to see "how" to create a boot disk, in the meantime, will appreciate any inputs.

Major problem, I was able to get in and uninstall everything I saw that has to do with spyware or virus but I can't get to load my antivirus software to run the scan and I can't get online, I can only get in in Safe mode and of course, I can't load Norton that way. The problem is that the pc boots to windows desktop in normal mode but the desktop's icons don't load and I can't get to the Start button, I put in the norton cd and it does not show on the screen so is there any way that I can "force" the installation of the norton software to run the scan and then try to get rid of the virus or spyware?

My cousin brought over his pc for me to try to fix for him, it is a Compaq 700 AMD, 256 Ram 20G HD. when I boot it up, before the Desktop's contents can be displayed there is a warning of Spyware detected and that the pc is infected. 1] My first question is, if I were to connect to the net through my network of which I have 3 pc's connected via a Router, is is possible for the virus to spread to any of my other pc's or is there a chance that the virus might remain anywehre in my system? 2] How should I proceed with this? Should I try to get rid of the virus by going to the net and downloading a virus protection software to get rid of it or should I simply reload windows? Please note that because of the virus, going to and doing anything on the net is a very difficult task, if not, impossible becuase of the virus. Thanks.

Yes I would Bob! If you can have a pc system diagnose any problem in an Automobile, I don't see why the pc can't diagnose it's own problem? I guess it's like a Doctor being able to heal other people but can't heal himself or a Mechanic being able to fix other people's cars but can't fix his own :mad: doesn't quite add up. :confused:

When you wipe a drive clean and begin installing a fresh OS system, one of the first options I always see concerns Partioning drives, can anyone explain this to me please? I don't understand why you would have to do this and why you would choose any of the options given? Thanks.

In the same way that you can hook up a Car engine to a pc and have it tell you exactly what's wrong with the car, is there any such tool/sofftware that can tell you what's wrong with your pc? Eg., let's say you are having trouble with a cd rom, can the tool/software tell you where the trouble is? If so, is it effective?

In XP Pro, can anyone give me the steps needed to place any icon from the Desktop unto the Taskbar so I can launch the program from the Taskbar's icons please? Thanks. p.s. I tried to do it from the Taskbar/start menu option in the Control Panel but it does not work, I guess I am doing something wrong.

Contacted Dell, they said I can add another drive and do what I have planned which is to keep the system drive as the "master" and make the 2nd drive the slave. I guess I will need some help to configure the 2nd drive but they should be able to tell me how to do so when the time comes.

Hey Gavin, how's it going? I think your idea might be best especially since I only need the bigger drive to store music and video files, I will look into it to see if I can "add" another drive on this pc and will get back to you. I had considered getting a much bigger drive but Dell told me that 160GB is the max size that they can recommend.

I am thinking of purchasing a 100GB Hard Drive and would like to know what would be the procedure to transfer what I have already unto the new drive? I don't wish to have to re-install windows or anything else and would like to "transfer" everything from my existing 40Gb drive to the new drive, I simply need more space, help please? Thanks.

When you start typing in a URL and you see it filtering through the words from the first letter, what is this feature called please? Reason I'm asking is, my music software has a Search function which when I start typing, from the very first letter, I will see the first letter of every song in my Music Library, then the more letters I type, it will continue filtering through the words. When you start typing a URL to go on the net, this works the same way, from the first letter, you will see all of the options or web addresses that you've visited before so you don't have to type the entire URL, you can simply select the correct URL as soon as you see it when typing the letters. My music library has a "Text" box where I will have to type in the entire name of any of my music categories then hit the Enter key to display that specific category, I wish to get a utility or something that will start filtering through all of my categories when I start typing in that text box but don't know exactly what to look for, any ideas please? My wife's Dell pc came with the regular integrated soundcard and she has had it for about a year now and never had to use the mic or recording section, the playback is fine but we can't record anything through this soundcard, I checked all of the settings on "my" pc which is the same as hers and I can't find anything wrong so I don't know why it is not recording, any ideas please?

I have been told this exact thing on one of my music forums Gavin but what I simply can't understand is this, "how" will you get to separate even a mono sound into 2 parts when it's coming through just 1 output channel?
