  1. My pc came with XP Home edition and service pack 2, I own a copy of XP Pro but service pack 1 as I bought it like 4 years ago but it can be updated, what I'd like to know is what will happen to all of my existing files and folders/settings if I were to load that older version of XP Pro? Or, is this a good idea?
  2. I need to use my 1 serial port for 2 separate things but at the same time, is it possible to "share" this one port? If not, then sdo I have any other options?
  3. I would like to control 2 or more cursors to click on different items on the screen, is this possible?
  4. What's the "least" amount of space required to run a pc efficiently? Meaning, when a HD is nearing it's capacity, there has to be a point at which things will not run 100%, anyone know how much free space is required for this not to happen? 2 gig, 1 gig, 500MB E.T.C?
  5. I have a 40gig hard drive, when I go into the Properties, I see Used space 31.6 GB Free space 2.11 GB 1] Where's the the missing 5-6 GB's? 2] What can I do to retrieve the missing space or what can I do to gain more space on this drive? Thanks.
  6. I already have a WinTV-GO PCI card which only has inputs, I had bought it to capture and watch TV on my pc on a small screen, now that I wish to do the opposite, my research into this shows that I need a PCI video/graphics card that has an "S-Video Out" for this to happen, if I were to go now and buy another card that has this output , what I would like to know is, can I install "2" video cards? Or would that cause any conflicts?
  7. I guess that the next thing I can do is to connect my pc to my TV, what type cable would I need?
  8. Problem, the insrtuctional DVD shows/plays fine on my pc DVD rom but it reads "incorrect Disc" when I put into my DVD player, I have a built-in DVD and VHS in my TV, maybe this is the problem or is it becuase the DVD player has printed on it "DVD-Video" means that it only plays DVD "videos"? Any fixes?
  9. Found the answer, it under the "Power Options" feature which gives you the option to choose/set the the time after which you want the monitor turned off.
  10. I don't know if this topic belongs here, if not, then please move it to it's appropriate place, thanks. I have a set of instructional pc learning DVDs and would prefer to sit back, relax and watch them on the TV instead of on the pc screen but I would have to use a mouse or something to navigate from one page to another, any ideas how this could be done please?
  11. Found the answer, created a "macro" for this, if anyone is interested in this, drop a line here.
  12. I set my windows slideshow at 1 minute so it will almost immediately come on when I leave the pc for a break or whatever, what happens is that a blank [black] screen comes on after some minutes so I have to then touch a key to bring back up the main pc screen and wait 1 minute for the slideshow to start again, is there a way for me to have the slideshow stay on all the time [infinitely] until I have to do something on the pc?
  13. I am really very impressed with your willingness to help phreakwars and you'll never know how much I appreciate the help but I after a "week" of frustration trying to get the x10 mouse remote to work with the Girder software I abandoned it and used another software to get the mouse remote working again which is the "max10" software. I have learned a lot from your posts though so your efforts haven't gone in vain, thanks a lot for the help, until next time, take it easy, Mike. p.s. If you guys here have any questions on music/pc automation, let me know.
  14. I don't think that the SOUNDMAX software is the problem becuase i got rid of the exclamation point and same result, also it doesn't show in the task manager, the remote is x10 and the software is the latest versiob, the best thing i can think of now is to use the bios settings you referred to, care to explain further please or anything else i can try?
  15. ok 1] No exclamation points in there but when I look in the Device Manager, under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers", I see a yellow exclamation point in "Soundmax Integrated Digital Audio" which doesn't belong to this pc but came bundled with some other music program I can't remember which but I remember uninstalling it so now it doesn't show in the Control Panel's Add/remove programs. The Soundmax is the music software that comes integrated with Laptops usually, so do you think this may be the cause? If so, how do I get rid of it? 2] Dell Dimension 3000 Celeron 2.6 Ghz XP Home SP2
  16. Hi, so sorry for forgetting to include more info, it's just that I don't really know what info you need? The OS is XP Home edition, can you tell me which of these you need in the System Summary please? 1] Hardware resources 2] Components 3] Software environment 4] Internet settings Thanks.
  17. I am trying to use an Automated Macro software for my remote control which plugs into the 1 Serial Port in my pc but when I try to configure the "com 1", I get this message "Device cannot be used, port is already in use" I am thinking now that some program somewhere has to be causing this and it is not any program in my System Tray as I only have McAfee, my Wireless Internet connection Icon and my Soundcard's DSP software's icon in there. Is there anything I can do to figure just what is using this port or why I am getting this message? Thanks.
  18. My desktop pc uses XP Home and my baby's laptop uses Windows 2000 Professional, I would like to know if it is possible to do a remote desktop or remotely control the Desktop from the laptop? Both the laptop and the deaktop has wireless internet cards. Thanks.
  19. I don't think I am going to attempt this becuase others ahve told me exactly what you said, I don't wish to end up with heating problems e.t.c, thanks for the info.
  20. Hmnn, then this doesn't make sense for me to get a replacement battery Bob as I use a laptop to remotely control my DJ software on my Desktop pc, this means that when the Battery runs out, I will have to shut down the pc, take out the screw, put in the new battery, replace the cover and screw, then start up windows again, this all will take too much time, also, even if I were to put in the new battery, I would only get another 2-3 hours or so and the one I've taken out will need at least 6 hours to recharge, so I can't use that one when the current one runs out, appreciate the info.
  21. When you purchase any laptop and you see the specs say 3 or 4 hours e.t.c of total battery life before having to recharge, I am wondering if you can use a "replacement" battery that will give longer life, is this possible? Or, what else can be done to get "more" hours out of your battery?
  22. It is a "Intel Pentium [m] 166Mhz 1.8v/2.5v w/MMX", here's the entire specs if you'd care to take a look http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_outFrm.jsp?moid=1073769616&ct=DS&soid=637867&BV_SessionID=@@@@1258032364.1113310223@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddegeeemdecgfkceghdgngdgmn.0
  23. I have a few different folders containing pics that I use for windows slideshow instead of using a screensaver. I would like to know please if there is any way that I can trigger these folders form the "desktop"? I would like this so I won't have to go through all of these motions everytime I wish to change the slideshow folder : start/controlpanel/appearanceandthemes/chooseascreensaver/settings/browse/ok/ok/apply/closeappearanceandthemesbox
  24. I have a choice of purchasing one of 2 similar models of a mini laptop with different processing speeds, the newer model [266Mhz] I am being told was just a "factory overclocked" version of it's predecessor [166Mhz]. I am being told that I can solder 2 wires on the older version and this will increase the speed from 166 to 266Mhz. I called the company and they said they are not aware of this or of any other way at all that the processing speed can be upgraded. The guy who is selling the item told me if I should buy the item he will provide exact instructions and pictures that will show me how to increase the speed but the item he is selling is not in good physical condition so I would like to purchase another one that's in good condition but then since i won't be buying it from that same person he will not give me the instructions which is why I am posting here, can anyone tell me how else I can go about finding out about the 2 wires that need to be soldered? Or any advice willl be appreciated, if you're wondering why I don't just purchase the newer version it's simply becuase it's out of my budget, thanks.
