  2. As Windows Server 2008, formerly code-named Longhorn, makes its final way out of Microsoft's corral this week, our Test Center inspected the beast and was surprised. "You who have followed Tom [Yager's] somewhat tepid Longhorn coverage may be shocked to discover that his in-depth review of Windows Server 2008 holds the new OS in high esteem," editor-in-chief Eric Knorr points out, in A long, long look at Windows Server 2008. Thanks in no small part to a smaller resource footprint that brings a host of capabilities, including virtualization, enhanced security and better networking, Microsofts 64-bit OS, Windows Server 2008, is what Tom Yager calls an upgrade that IT can't refuse. "Microsoft has executed Windows Server 2008 in a way that makes commercial Linux far less appealing," Yager explains in Product review: Windows Server 2008 is the host with the most and the perfect guest. "In those places where Linux might be seen as a good fit for its performance and small footprint, any Windows Server 2008 SKU ... all but slams the door shut on Linux in a Windows shop." While Longhorn's features are already known to the public, Sean McCown shares Secrets of Windows Server 2008, those being what you need to know now, as well as "the actual impact that Longhorn will have on your organization." These include restartable ActiveDirectory Domain Services, NTFS enhancements, Server Core, Read-only domain controllers, and the list goes on. New found at InfoWorld.
  3. Windows Server 2008 is the most recent release of Microsoft Windows's server line of operating system. Releasing February 27, 2008, it is the successor to Windows Server 2003, released nearly five years earlier. Like Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 is built on the Windows NT 6.0 kernel. It was known as Windows Server Codename "Longhorn" until May 16, 2007, when Microsoft chairman Bill Gates announced its official title (Windows Server 2008) during his keynote address at WinHEC.[1] Beta 1 was released on July 27, 2005, Beta 2 was announced and released on May 23, 2006 at WinHEC 2006 and Beta 3 was released publicly on April 25, 2007. Release Candidate 0 was released to the general public on September 24, 2007 and Release Candidate 1 was released to the general public on December 5, 2007. Windows Server 2008 was released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008 with the official launch planned for February 27, 2008. Windows Server 2008 Wikipedia Page

  6. Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008 includes several enhancements over previous versions. Organizations can now provide centralized access to applications without the need to provide the whole remote desktop. Applications running remotely can be integrated with the local users desktoplooking, feeling, and behaving like local applications. With Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008, organizations can provide more secure access to centralized applications or desktops (and other resources from the Internet) by using HTTPSwithout needing to provide access via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or opening up unwanted ports on firewalls. This reduces the complexity needed to provide secure remote access to applications and data for users, partners, or customers. And for deployments with several servers, new load-balancing features provide a simple way to ensure optimal performance by spreading sessions among the least-loaded available resources. 7. Microsoft has included a Domain Name System (DNS) Server service in versions of Windows Server since Windows NT 4.0. DNS is a hierarchical, distributed database that contains mappings of DNS domain names to various types of data, such as IP addresses. With Windows Server 2008, the DNS Server service includes new background zone loading, enhancements to support IPv6, support for read-only domain controllers (RODCs), and the ability to host global single-label names. 12. I just installed mysql on my 2008 server. One thing I seen different than any install on 2003 is the connection is set to named pipes. I had to force network to get mysql gui tools working. Then I installed php. I'm using the new fastcgi wrapper so once the server goes into production I'll see if the performance is any better than it was in 2003. Sure is easier to get it installed.

  16. I just read this article about integrating MCE into Windows Home Server. Maybe this can also be done on Windows Server 2008. http://mswhs.com/2008/02/22/new-add-in-will-integrate-mce-and-whs/
  17. Microsoft's Windows Server 2008 will present a number of challenges, including application compatibility concerns, to users looking to migrate given its palette of new components, APIs, and feature upgrades, experts say. Some issues will be familiar to those who rolled out Vista, including user-account control, which restricts user privileges, and the Windows Firewall, which is turned on by default. Vista also has an ongoing issue with application compatibility that is not cleared up in the pending release of Vista Service Pack 1. Other issues unique to Windows Server 2008, such as new, clustering APIs, will require application testing and some recoding of applications, according to Microsoft. The server also will present issues for in-place upgrades and upgrades to servers running Exchange 2007. Experts say Windows Server 2008, which has been under development for five years, provides many improvements over the current platform but getting there from currently installed software will require some perseverance and result in methodical rollouts. "The comparison should not be to Windows 2003, it should be to Windows 2000," says Al Gillen, an IDC analyst. "2003 was an improved version of 2000, but [Windows Server 2008] is not an improved version of Windows Server 2003 R2. [Windows Server 2008] has enough new stuff in it that it will cause people to go through a whole evaluation and scenario planning activity. It is disruptive in a lot of respects and will impact application compatibility." Gillen says he anticipates a substantial impact on older applications, although he said he does not yet have a sense how extensive or invasive the impact might be. One area that Microsoft has already highlighted is clustering, where it has rewritten the MSClus APIs that shipped with Windows Server 2003. Microsoft says the new APIs provide better features, scalability and management, but it acknowledges that applications using the old APIs will break or provide incorrect results if they are run on Windows Server 2008. 18. I haven't heard about anyone getting MCE installed on 2008. I don't even know if it is possible.
  19. As long as you set access by IP and created a user you'll be safe and secure.
  20. Nothing to worry about. Connection limit is a little low. Add this to my.ini and restart mysql. max_connections = 500
  21. Looks like the first install of mysql is running. Check processes in task manager ad see if mysql is running. If it is stop it.
  22. use --console as only argumant when starting mysql for the first time. C:\mysql-5.0.51\bin\mysqld --console Your my.ini looks good. If the above doesn't work move my.ini to c:\Windows and see if that works. Once you get mysqld running you can use mysql administrator to set my.ini to mysql dir.
  23. Use my-huge.ini as a start and you can adjust it as needed. For this server I have 8Gigs like you on the db server and have it set at 512.
  24. You can take a virtual test drive of some of the features of Windows Server2008 at Microsoft Windows Server 2008 home. Take a look and try out the test drive.
