How do I turn off Essentials and use Defender, simple question should have a simple answer. I run Defender, but Essentials is on, does this mean Defender is non operable? I also see the great screens attributed to Defender, yet I don't have them when I run Defender to scan my putor. Any suggestions? View this thread

I am a Microsoft enthusiast, but, it seems that with all the great items that are available, if you are not the current consumer...you are left behind? My WP7.8 phone is great...but I only hear of new capabilities/opportunities for WP8. I have not heard of iPhone users who are not on iPhone 5 NOT being able to use apps and most functionalities? Zune.net v XBox live? It just feels that Zune.net is not really getting any attention. However, all you are left with if you have not adopted a full-fledged W8 computer...not a converted W7 computer, IS Zune.net. As far as Apps go, is it possible that more can be made for both platforms? I got my WP7.5 phone last year and the model was ONLY introduced 5 months before WP8 came out. It would seem that if if apps can be made across different styles of phones, than at least WP7,7.5,7.8 can be included to? And if not the 3rd party developers, DEFINITELY Microsoft...? For the record I have WP7.8, W8 (converted), W7 and even a Zune &amp Zune HD. I like my products...just wish I didn't feel like I am penalized for being in the 'old school' vs the 'new school'. I've had Windows 8 since the day it was released. Just yesterday I purchased Windows Media player online for $10. Ever since that every time I turn on my computer it says something about "Windows activation is ready" and I don't even know what it is. But, whether I do it on the Metro setting or control panel on the Desktop view, the Windows Activation does not work. I installed the internet explorer 10 for windows 7 and now the HP simple pass does not work on any site. There are no updates on HP simple pass that have been missed. Windows Update listing several of the latest security updates as pending with error 80242014 I still have 4 of the latest security updates pending, one is for Internet Explorer 9 and the other three are for Vista. I've read through most of the related posts for answers on how to fix this problem and either they don't apply or they don't work to fix the problem I have had this issue before with With Windows Update and previous a "Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 9" and took two months before Microsoft released a new patch to fix the issue. Well, here I am again looking for answers. Is this related to the security patches or the Windows Update program itself. BTY, In Internet Explorer on the help tab menu I selected "About Internet Explorer 9 " you see the latest security patch was installed (sometimes it's listed here if installation succeeded and the latest security update was applied). The latest security update was listed, But in Windows Update in the " View installed updates" section it has the latest update as pending with error code 80242014. I don't know how to ensure the security updates pertaining to Windows Vista are installed. So, I really thought I should ask before tampering with the registry. I really believe my problem is with the Windows Update program itself. Again, I had this problem before with Culumulative Updates In Internet Explorer 9. But I don't remember the fix I found here in the community forms. basically I tried all my known ideas and fixes ("sfc/scannow", etc.) to fix these security related updates. I don't use Security Essentials, except just Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and Norton Antivirus Software. I need help on finding out if these updates are really installed and the Windows Update files are corrupted or if they should be re-installed. By other method, When I tried to download them and re-install them myself I got this message box " The update does not apply to your system" I'm confused why would Windows Update try to install updates that apply to my system in the first place? Ok, so I have tried literally 100 times to install Windows Service Pack 1 (KB976932). I have Windows 7 Home Premium. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/441/capturedoa.png/ ( if the photo looks choopy click it to enlarge) As you can see I DO NOT have anything telling me what type of service pack I have installed onto my computer. I do not know why there isn't anything showing there. I did talk to tech support and they told me that my computert is customed (I wasn't aware of this. I bought it when I was 16). It's driver's and such are manufactured by Toshiba and Intel. So I decided not to take the risk of upgrading my drivers.Simpky cause I do not know what I am doing, and I do not want to take the risk of getting an error code and ending up with more problem than what i started off with. But I really don't think I would have to upgrade them. Especially since I do all of my Windows updates. Anywho, I have read countless of forums and such about W7 SP1 and I've tried all possible solutions. NO luck. Yes all the rest of my udates have been installed. Only one that will not install is W7 SP1. I continue to recieve error code 8024200d. I later found out that this error message means that I am missing some files that go along with the service pack. I do not know which ones they are, nor do I know how to find out where to download them and find which ones I do need. However, I check the windows update system constantly to see if any other patches are needed to be installed. None shows except for that darn W7 SP1 (KB976932). I've tried the all the troubleshooters offered by Windows but none have helped. Only one that I have not tried was the System Update Readiness Tool. That's only because it will not download for some reason. I would really love some extreme help with this. I've been trying solution after solution for the past 2 months. NOTHING has worked. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336 [ignore the title &amp Symptoms]. 1b. Dismiss/close the "automated troubleshooter" pop-up! - then... 1c. Ignoring any "Not recommended" or similar warnings, run Fix It 50202 in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes. [1] 2. Reboot &amp then run a manual check for updates at Windows Update, etc., etc...When you reach Windows Update, do a Custom scan for updates. Take (accept) the ones marked Critical or Important.Decline any that are marked as "optional". Have infinite patience while it scans and does it's work. When it prompts you to Restart Windows, please do that. Allow it to restart. IF and only if you get an "error" or "exception/failure" message, I will need the complete so called "failure code" and description (if you see it). Please have good patience, this is not very complicated. Ask me if you have questions.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[1] Running the Fixit in aggressive mode will result in your history of installed MS updates to be "empty" when viewed online at Windows Updates.What is actually installed on your system will not be affected. I very recently (within the past 8 days) started to encounter Error 80070002 when running Windows Update on my laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. I have run through all the steps in the knowledge base, and have run the automatic troubleshooter, which returns successful repair of issues however the problem remains.Shy of having the OS fully reinstalled, are there any additional steps I should consider? Because of problems with her sight, my mother has set her text settings so large that they cut off the bottom of screens that I need to get at to make changes in some other settings, including the screen dpi. Is there a work-around for this one? View this thread

Hi. I run W7 - 64 bit edition with Office 2010 (Home User + Access - 32 bit edition) &amp my security is from ESET. I cannot install KB982726 &amp would be very grateful for some assistance in getting this sorted. After scanning and cleaning my privacy and registry, within 15 minuets my security essentials logs goes to an orange color indicated potentially unprotected. Either fix this or get out of the malware business altogether, or team up with another company who can run this for you. food for thought. I have a brand new laptop with Windows 8. The windows defender keeps saying I have not scanned for a while yet I keep running a scan and it still comes back saying you have not scanned for some time despite the fact that it says the last scan was the same day. Attempting to bring a 5 year old HP 530 (they referred to it as a Business Notebook (??), with 32 bit Windows Vista Home Basic, back to original, using the 2 discs that can bring system up-to-date with prompted updates. I don't need to save anything, ANY files AT ALL. I want to return it to like when I bought it, and use the 2 original discs to doneverything, and then bring it up-to-date with prompted updates. Apparently, I don't know when to press F9 or whatever, at what time, or when to put the second of the 2 original discs in. From what I understand, #1 disc is Operating System DVD, #2 disc is Application and Driver Recovery DVD (???). Copyright dates on these are 2007 &amp 2008. Also, I do have Product Key. I need a COMPLETE tutorial, step by step, as I've attempted this 4 times, not getting the hang of it, &amp obviously don't have enough expericence at this. When I THOUGHT I had completed this, after an all day multiple-update experience, none of the prompted updates included Service Pak 1 (SP1), which I understand is needed before acquiring Service Pak 2 (SP2). Plus, most my Internet searches popped up a small window basically saying couldn't connect to page, OPERATION ABORTED.... Do I need to attempt to disable (?) Windows Defender before installing ESET 6 Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes paid version to this thing?? And at what point do I install these.
