When I try to update Windows I get the error that the page could not be displayed with error code 0x80244004. I'm running XP SP3. Fresh install many years ago. NOT running Eset and never have. Have been running Avast. As an experiment I uninstalled Avast and tried update without any AV but still had problem. Virus scans with Avast, Malwarebytes and TDSSKiller all come up clean. System may have had a rootkit some time ago that was cleaned. Proxy was checked using both IE options and proxycfg, no proxy. I don't know exactly when the problem started since I use this computer mainly for file strage and backup and I don't check it that often. Java version installed is version 7 update 21. All older versions have been removed. What else did I miss? Thanks! View this thread

Hi, I don't know if this is where I would ask this kind of question and if it isn't, then maybe you could tell me where to look. We purchased a brand new system from Best Buy. It is Windows 7 Home Premium and it is an Asus. We had to transfer documents and pictures from our old XP system and when this was done, I believe there was a lot of files and or programs transferred with them that I don't know if we really need. Since our XP system was built by a friend, I couldn't even tell you what all was there. We had Microsoft Office 2003 with Outlook mail. Anyway, I would like to clean up the not needed update installs if this can be done. Can It!!!!! View the thread

If MSE is run from a non-administrator account, does it scan all the places as it does from an administrator account? What about the reverse? What I'm trying to get at is, does the scan proceed in exactly the same way, independent of the account from which it is invoked? Finally, can one be assured that the exact same scan is done when run from an administrator account compared to running *as* administrator, but done from a non-administrator account? I am trying to install MSE, but it tells me to uninstall MSE. However, it is not there anymore. There are 5 Microsoft Visuall C++ that I can't uninstall for nothing (which I believe there are leftovers of the old MSE . I have tried everything and it keeps telling to uninstall MSE before I reinstall it. Gives me the code 0x8004FF2, without the E. Jose Fresco View this thread

I have McAfee on my laptop. McAfeesays computer is secured and no action necessary. Three days ago I wanted to get access to my Documents folder in C drive but could not open any file or folder. It says the file could be couurpt. I like to retrieve all those files (over 100). Could be a virus? I got the computer clear of all the viruses with malwarebytes, hitmanpro, unhide files etc but the problem is still there. View this thread

I have the laptop: "HA8-123K"which had Windows 8 installed. I always see the Action Center flag at the bottom right of the screen always notifying me run "Automatic Maintenance." I run it and it slows down my laptop to near non responsive with programs, and internet. So I open task manager, and "System" uses from 1 MB/s to 37 MB/s and it jumps from 99% of the Disk to 100%. I'm confused to the fact that sometimes it could be 1 MB/s and be 99 to 100% and have the same results at 30 to 40 MB/s. That's the only program above 1 MB/s, and there's only 3 that has it in decimal form. I read someone-elses question similar and I noticed we both have CCleaner. Could this be the cause? Windows Vista 32 Have had MSE installed for years no problems. Got a virus yesterday my MSE still showed green scanned and it found two moderate infections and removed them after a full scan twice, Went to Update as it was not yellow when I got infected but thought I better check, It will not update get warning that user not identified or something like that as I am on my sons computer as afraid to use mine do not have the exact message. Tried to go to the MSE page to update and it will not load and if it does will not stop uploading to be able to click onto the update area. So I cannot update and worried as it never notified me of the threat and not sure its even gone. Thank you View this thread

I still have 4 of the latest security updates pending, one is for Internet Explorer 9 and the other three are for Vista. I've read through most of the related posts for answers on how to fix this problem and either they don't apply or they don't work to fix the problem I have had this issue before with With Windows Update and previous a "Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 9" and took two months before Microsoft released a new patch to fix the issue. Well, here I am again looking for answers. Is this related to the security patches or the Windows Update program itself. BTY, In Internet Explorer on the help tab menu I selected "About Internet Explorer 9 " you see the latest security patch was installed (sometimes it's listed here if installation succeeded and the latest security update was applied). The latest security update was listed, But in Windows Update in the " View installed updates" section it has the latest update as pending with error code 80242014. I don't know how to ensure the security updates pertaining to Windows Vista are installed. So, I really thought I should ask before tampering with the registry. I really believe my problem is with the Windows Update program itself. Again, I had this problem before with Culumulative Updates In Internet Explorer 9. But I don't remember the fix I found here in the community forms. basically I tried all my known ideas and fixes ("sfc/scannow", etc.) to fix these security related updates. I don't use Security Essentials, except just Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and Norton Antivirus Software. I need help on finding out if these updates are really installed and the Windows Update files are corrupted or if they should be re-installed. By other method, When I tried to download them and re-install them myself I got this message box " The update does not apply to your system" I'm confused why would Windows Update try to install updates that apply to my system in the first place? Please Help! Thank you Sincerely, Ganine V. Edwards View this thread
