While Microsoft is planning to launch Windows 10 on PCs this summer, the phone part of the operating system will debut at a later date. Speaking at a media event at Build in San Francisco today, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore explained the company's plans for the launch of Windows 10. "Our phone builds have not been as far along as our PC builds," explained Belfiore. "We’re adapting the phone experiences later than we’re adding the PC experiences." That slower progress means Windows 10 on phones will show up after the PC launch this summer. "There are devices and features that will come not on launch date, but following it," says Belfiore. "From the device view, our main focus is to kick off the Windows 10 launch wave with a great launch on the PC. You should expect that the other devices — phone, HoloLens, Xbox, Surface Hub — will be staggered, probably not on the same date as the PC." It's not surprising to see Microsoft launch Windows 10 on phones later than PC, but it's a confirmation that new Lumia hardware will arrive later this year and not at the same time as Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft's PC release of Windows 8.1 shipped earlier than the phone release, and Windows 10 is continuing that trend. Not all Windows 10 features will be available at launch. Alongside the phone launch plans, Microsoft also admitted that some features won't be available on Windows 10 at launch. Belfiore wasn't clear on how many features will miss the initial launch window, but he did reveal that launch features start in the summer and increase in the fall. One example is Microsoft's new Edge browser extension support that will arrive after the summer. Given the lack of the new messaging app with Skype integration in current preview builds, it's likely that this won't arrive in the summer either. "We’re in that finishing up phase of the project, and we’re going to continue to get builds out to insiders," explains Belfiore. Microsoft still isn't ready to say exactly when the company will launch Windows 10, and it's still working on the specifics. "We’re on track for this summer, but you should definitely have this notion in mind of Windows as a service," says Belfiore. That notion means that Windows 10 may launch this summer, but there's gonna be a lot of rapid updates, new features, and app changes in the months after launch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ2m0b04z7c Microsoft originally commissioned English musician Brian Eno to create the startup sound for Windows 95. Eno’s piece of music was known widely as the Windows sound. At just over three seconds long, it became an iconic sound as Windows 95 grew in popularity. Microsoft has since changed its sound schemes for many Windows versions over the years, but now it appears to be evoking memories of the summer of 1995 with Windows 10. The Windows 10 startup sound is still a mystery. Russian site WP7 Forum has discovered a number of new system sounds in an unreleased preview version of Windows 10. While they’re not identical to the Windows 95 startup sound, put together they sound similar to the ambience of booting a Windows 95 PC. A new startup sound for Windows 10 hasn’t been uncovered just yet, but the leaked collection includes low battery alerts, calendar reminders, system messages, and new mail alerts. They’re all very similar and subtle, while remaining modern and far removed from the jarring error sounds of past versions of Windows. It’s not clear whether Microsoft has worked with any musicians to create the new Windows 10 sound effects, but the software maker has worked with a variety over the years. While the company is currently previewing versions of Windows 10, a final sound scheme isn’t in place. Even the look and feel of the operating system is still being tweaked, and leaked screenshots today suggest that the company is bringing back some Windows 7 transparency to its Start Menu along with subtle UI changes around the OS. Microsoft is expected to detail more about the final stages of Windows 10 at its Build developer conference tomorrow morning, and The Verge will be covering it live starting at 11:30AM ET. When Cortana first arrived in Windows 10 preview builds, it was rough. Features, general usability, and the look and feel was really early, but Microsoft has been steadily improving things ever since. The software giant is now testing out even better ways of bringing some of the popular features of Cortana from the phone over to the PC. During a media event at Microsoft Build today I got a closer look at some of the changes coming over the next few weeks. Microsoft is heavily tweaking the Cortana user interface and more closely integrating it into the Start Menu and general Windows 10 experience. Some small, but noticeable, changes include new Cortana animations as you activate the digital assistant. If you use the "hey Cortana" command then a miniature version of Cortana appears while it dictates commands. The look and feel of Cortana is steadily improving alongside these changes, and even the recent public preview builds of Windows 10 show some of that progress. Elsewhere, Microsoft is simply improving on what Cortana can do within the Microsoft Edge browser or from a phone running Windows 10. New commands in Microsoft Edge include calculations and the ability to look up even more data from within the address bar. Of particular interest is some work Microsoft is doing with Uber. While the company is integrating Uber into its calendar for Outlook, it's going a step further with Cortana. Microsoft is planning to suggest Uber rides within Cortana alongside transit information to help Windows Phone users decided which mode of transport they want to use for appointments. It's an interesting progression of how Microsoft has engineered Cortana, and the company's plans for the digital assistant. Extending Cortana to other apps and services is key if Microsoft wants it to become something every Windows 10 user relies on. Most of these changes will show up in new preview builds of Windows 10 in the coming weeks, and the new interface improvements will arrive first. Microsoft is unveiling a new lock screen for Windows 10 today that will change over time and customize itself based on how each person uses their computer. The new lock screen is optional, but if you do enable it, you'll see something a lot like the Bing homepage: a beautiful image provided by Microsoft with a number of hot spots on it that you can mouse over for more information. It's not quite the same, however. On the lock screen, it sounds like the image will change closer to once a week, and those hot spots will also provide tips on how to use Windows and suggestions for what apps you might want to download. These are effectively ads, though they blend in with the other information on screen. The new lock screen is being called Windows Spotlight. "We are able ... to understand what your use of the PC is" to provide personalized suggestions, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore says. If someone has recently gotten a Windows 10 computer and hasn't tried Cortana yet, Belfiore explained that Spotlight might change their desktop to a Cortana-like image and include tips on how to use the personal assistant. If someone with a tablet hadn't used their stylus, Spotlight might display an image highlighting drawing apps. In his demonstration, Spotlight prompted users to download the Fresh Paint app. That's one of Microsoft's own apps, but Belfiore emphasized that this is about introducing users to the entire Windows ecosystem — a similar app suggestion slot is being placed right in the Start menu, too. It's an interesting idea for how Microsoft can get people more engaged with Windows and market apps to them at the same time. The nice images are a big bonus, too, though it's hard to imagine how long people will stick around if Spotlight ends up being more about getting you to download apps than showing you something truly interesting. Microsoft has been demonstrating all its new changes in Windows 10 during the Build developers conference this morning, and now the company is ready to provide a new update for testers. Windows 10 build 10074, which leaked out recently, is now ready to roll out officially. It’s the first preview that really demonstrates Microsoft’s various UI changes in Windows 10, and it brings back some of the Aero Glass features that were present in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Not everyone will get Aero Glass "We’ve also heard loud and clear that many Windows Insiders want to see Aero Glass from Windows 7 make a comeback," says Microsoft’s Gabe Aul. "We’ve been working out how to satisfy this request, and are trying some things out with this build to see how you like them." Microsoft is planning to enable normal transparency on 50 percent of Windows 10 testers and a blur effect like frosted glass on the other 50 percent. "If Windows Insiders really like the blur effect, we will add it to more areas and even consider making it the default instead of standard transparency." Elsewhere, there’s also a new Live Tile animation that makes Tiles more 3D-like. The animation leaked the other day, and it’s subtle change to the existing flip animation in Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Microsoft is also making improvements to Continuum and its tablet mode. The taskbar once tablet mode is enabled is far more simplified, and the Start Screen is more similar to Windows 8. Microsfot appears to be listening to feedback around the touch parts of Windows 10 being scaled back too heavily, and it’s adjusting the operating system accordingly. This latest preview also includes new default Windows sounds. Some of these sounds leaked recently, with ambient modern tones that evoke memories of a Windows 95 startup sound. Microsoft is looking for feedback around these sounds. Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, has also been refreshed this time around with a hamburger menu and more close integration with the Start Menu. Cortana will also get a new Bing Instant Answers feature, which allows you to ask things like "how tall is Brad Pitt" or "time in London." These features currently exist in Cortana on Windows Phone. If you’re already running Windows 10 then the new preview is available immediately from Windows Update, or there are ISO files for those who want to run the OS in a virtual machine or as a clean install. I like that idea, Lina. I really dislike the Metro tiles and I don't use them on my Windows 8.1 computer. I have gotten used to them on my Windows phone.
