I have just carried out a clean install on Vista and have run Windows Update and installed all updates offered. However, after 3 days I have still not received an offer of SP1. I am reluctant to download the large stand-alone version as a) Ms website states this should not be used for a single computer download but Windows Update is the correct route to take b) others on this forum seem to have been offered SP1 automatically on Windows Update as recently as 3 months ago, even though Ms support ceased in 2011 and c) apparently, the download of the stand-alone version may not work if I have still not received all the pre-requisite updates from Windows Update. My questions are:- 1) Have I waited long enough now to be certain I'm not going to be offered SP1 and 2) Why are Ms saying on the one hand that Windows Update route should be used not the stand-alone version and then, on the other hand, stating elsewhere that all SP1 support has been withdrawn? Any advice would be most welcome View this thread

I'm running on Windows 7 and in the "network and sharing" page, I can see another computer listed below mine with a name that I dn't recognise. I can't get access to it but have no idea where it suddenly came from - is this someone that's got access to my computer ? And if so, how do I get rid of it ? Or is it something normal that I've just not noticed before ? View the thread

I have a new harddisk and have had to reinstall the operation system Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT from 2008. After installation I updated the machine with over 130 updates from Windows Update (2008-2013 critical upates etc..). Now Windows Update tells me to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1. I follow the instructions and hit install. After 1 second I am told that Windows Vista SP1 was sucessfully installed. When refreshing Windows Update is AGAIN asking me to install SP1. Clearly it was not installed the first time even if it said so. I have tried to download the standalone version of SP1. When i try to run this, it also does not want to run! Question 1: Why am I not able to install SP1 Question 2: Do I need to install SP1 or can I just install SP2 instead? Please help:) View this thread

Is there a way to get Microsoft Secutity Essentials to scan a cd or dvd for viruses or malware? Or does MS have a program to do this? I want to scan a dvd to make sure it doesn't contain a virus or malware before I run it. John View this thread

Hi, How do we disable Windows Critical Update? I am having a big pain with regards to this so called "critical" freaking update. There are a few things that makes me feel irate whenever there is this uninformed stupid update, and they can be listed as below: 1. Jams my keyboard buffers. If I hold down a key too long the whole laptop will just go freezing with some noise coming out from the speaker. Once it release the key it went back to normal. 2. Files directory changed. Not one but a lot. The shortcuts i have no longer works, as they report file missing and stuffs. 3. Internet connection issue. This one caused me deep **** everytime, especially when I have to submit my work online. 4. My computer slows down like a snail even when I have an i5-2.30GHz 4GB RAM. Games won't load as fast as they do, and lags in game. 5. My application somehow all set to be run in 32-bit instead of the usual 64-bit. Big pain. 6. Windows media player playlist could not detect my library. 7. So much more. The point here is, I don't want this shitty critical update that so called fixes DDoS or stuffs, so claimed. It causes my system to be imbalanced, crappy and at the same time rises my BP. Everytime there is an issue like this I have to perform a freaking system restore and even after that Windows will just simply re-update it automatically. Any form of help is kindly advisable. Windows couldn't check for updates automatically, not since December 2012. Am afraid to do the clean boot for fear of losing any system restore point. When check for windows update it gives me the dreaded 800F080D. Automatic updates are turned on. I have heard of the dll addresses being messed up, that may be my case, not sure. You can't call anyone to walk you through anything anymore... sort of scared to do it myself. I ran the sfc/scannow didn't find anything wrong. Ran a Microsoft Fixit and it couldn't find anything. I ran something else (can't remember what) and it said: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: SearchProtection.exe Version 1.0.14.0 Timestamp 5092b144 Fault Module Name: SearchProtection.exe Version 1.0.14.0 Timestamp 5092b144 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00037a2c OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 0a9e Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789 Additional Information 3: 0a9e Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789 I would like to find this SearchProtection.exe and fix it.
