Agreed. However it seems to suck much less than MS.

*cough* Aero *cough*

And on that note, my ubuntu desktop looks 100% identical on my Quad Core
3.0Ghz machine with a 8800 GTX than it does on my co-workers Celeron
1.2GHz with a 16mb video memory (shared with system RAM) integrated video
card.

I mean sure, she isn't going to be running Compiz (neither do I for that
matter though, I just stick to standard Gnome)...but I have trouble
imagining her running Aero...or for that matter...Vista in any shape or
form.

I mean, a decent video card is a decent idea *period* no matter which OS.
But man, I've gotten Ubuntu with the standard Gnome desktop running on a
machine as low as some little dell laptop with only 256 megs of system
ram shared with 8 megs of video memory.

So where exactly are you getting that graphics card statement from?

Is it just me or did you essentially just admit that Linux has the better
eyecandy?

And on that note, what is wrong with that?

MS Seems perfectly happy using Aero as a marketing gimmick to get people
to switch to Vista...so according to that rule, they shouldn't be doing
doing that as it's only eyecandy right?

I mean, gotta be consistent...

I normally would think that this is not an appropriate place for
discussing and advocating Linux but even MVPs don't have self-control,
so let's do it together.

It's getting closer to Windows prior to Vista and it takes much less
time for me to access to XP's shared folders, set up HP printer and to
install Nvidia driver than that with Vista.

I think MS is taking the right approach for rethinking the Windows'
design instead of listening to their techie staffs and fanbois.

I'm sorry if my post was in the wrong forum. But I thought it was because I
wanted to know what Vista users think of Ubuntu.

I'm amazed to read all the threads and the reactions. The cheers and the
boos.

Basically, I just got to know about Ubuntu. I can afford vista and I have
vista. Just a little pissed off with the problems Vista (and it
predecessors) gave me.

After years of dealing with Windows, I thought someone could come, lift me
off my feet, get rid of the BSOD, forget about updating antivirus, etc.

Guess the day will never come. If it did, what will Bill Gates live on?

Ubuntu isn't Windows, is it. So it has nothing to do with Vista either,
really. Unix is good for some things, but far from all. But I refrain
from installing Vista after reading all the bad stuff about it.
XP works fine for me as a private person. I've been using both Linux and
FreeBSD for many years.

It's ok if you need a server solution. Not if you need a desktop solution.

Stephan

For both Aero and Compiz Fusion, a half decent video card is required. The
basic Windows and Ubuntu desktop appearances are dull.

Unlike some here, I do not denigrate Linux distros, only the people who make
wild claims for them.

Not really. Where is the joke? You make greater claims for Ubuntu than ever
Mark Shuttleworth does. You don't judge from a technical standpoint, so much
as your dislike for Microsoft..

I guess you conveniently don't remember how you've dissed ABI Word, OO

What's to like about Microsoft? They *obviously* hold their paying
customers in disdain.

Man, the latest Gnome Desktop in Ubuntu 8.04 is anything but dull, they
did a really good job as far as I am concerned. The look of the UI has
been updated in a lot of subtle ways virtually everywhere which really
adds up to a big difference in look and feel overall.

Yea Compiz can add a few neat little things but realistically speaking,
I've found myself never using any of it.

Well honestly, if you are really interested in giving Ubuntu a try, my
suggestion for you is to go either the Ubuntu newsgroup or forums and ask
there. And don't ask the question you asked here "Have you tried Ubuntu
and is it good"? I mean, that'd be a relatively useless question to ask
in those places. Matter of fact, it's a pretty useless question to ask
anywhere because the question doesn't address *your* needs.

A better question would be along these lines:

"I'm interested in Ubuntu and these are the things I need to be able to
do:" and list your needs there.

At that point in time, your specific needs can be addressed and you can
more accurately get an idea whether or not it would be an alternative for
you.

Nope.. I didn't diss Abiword or OO. It amused me when you made that claim
about doing 'real' work using Abiword.

As for OO, I don't use it personally, but have loaded it onto systems where
the client can't afford MS Office. There is a good choice of templates for
OO too, but no more than is already available for Office 2007.

Re Ubuntu, it is just one of many Linux distros. If one of my clients wanted
it, or any of the others, I would install it and do my best to support the
client.

My issue with you is that you do not consider all aspects of moving from one
platform to another. Your assumption that people only surf, send e-mail and
write letters to Santa is way off of the mark, and you appear to know
nothing regards exporting data from one application platform to another, or
even if it is possible and that the user will have the functionality they
are used to having. You are clouded by your dislike of Microsoft, and I
still maintain that it makes your advice dangerous.

Total B.S. Works great as a desktop solution - you'd know that if you ever
