I could keep using ubuntoo ... that would be pathetic !

Vista cannot play DVD's out of the box,
you need to pay for a DVD decoder or install another program that has the
DVD decoder inside

you didn't know that did you?

Well, you could update the wikipedia article, Alias. Automatix has forums
(with slightly different rules than the MS newsgroups) linked to at:

It looks like not everyone's experience has been as easy as yours.

Vista Home Premium can.

Re: Included - the link

Vista cannot play DVD's out of the box, (nor XP for that matter)
you need to pay for a DVD decoder or install another program that has the
DVD decoder inside

this IDIOT OP doesnt know skit about vista and he is trying to say trash
about Ubuntu....

Many people dont know how to get a dvd to play in windows if they have no
other decoder installed
by chance before... just because their dvd came with a bundle of apps that
includes
powerdvd or windvd...

ignorance..

Thats why I luv bashing all these windows vista wannabie lovers..

I know more than all of them together about windows and vista..

and thats why they cant get away with crap

you are correct.. it seems that Home premium and Ultimate have the dvd
decoder preinstalled

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/dvdcodecs.aspx

If you are running the Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Business,
Windows Vista Enterprise, or Windows XP operating system on your computer,
you might need to install a compatible DVD decoder (also known as a MPEG-2
decoder) before continuing with the following activities.
a.. Playing a DVD
b.. Playing a recorded TV show
c.. Playing video files that were encoded with the MPEG-2 codec (.mpeg,
..mpg, and some .avi files)

You may have better luck at guessing Vista's capabilities if you actually
get it.

eat my headers...

I aknowlage when I do not know something. I cant know everything about
everything..

but that does not mean that vista is anything else than crap

The reason for the dvd codec on ultimate and home premium is because it has
the media center ...

Agreed. I downloaded Ubuntu and discovered after the installation failed that
because I was using RAID 0 I needed the alternate install that didn't have
all the wiz-bang features that would do the heavy lifting for me. I tried
researching the issue but could only find arguments between *nix users on
whether you should use Fake Raid or not.

By comparison, Vista did install quickly and with just a few mouse clicks.
To be honest, I am disappointed. I wanted to see the cool Ubuntu stuff. Maybe
now that IBM has announced compatibility things will get better.

Yea trying to install Ubuntu (dunno about other distributions) onto a non-
hardware raid array is a pain. I was just playing with that myself with
that the other day and said screw it. In hindsight this actually did me a
favor as one of my raptors (ironically the one with windows on it) died
on me today. With a raid 0 setup that would've sucked.

So for the future, I'll probably go look for a real hardware raid
controller and just forget about this half-assed on-board motherboard
crap. A setup like that, for one performs better and secondly definitely
wouldn't be a problem as it just appears as one hard drive to the outside
world and the OS doesn't even know there is a raid volume.

In any case, be it linux or windows, that's definitely going to be my
preferred solution for the future.

Installing XP onto that raid volume was no fun either (I dual boot both
Ubuntu and XP). The installer coped with the raid volume better than
Ubuntu, gotta give XP credit for that, but I did have to dig up a floppy
drive from like a 10 year old server machine in the office to give the XP
setup the necessary drivers.
