RSA was great last week - security was clearly top of mind for the attendees, and I fielded a number of different questions last week about how Microsoft protects our customers. Some are pretty straightforward around how the various Windows 7 security technologies work, but many have focused on how we actually deliver protection to customers on an ongoing basis. One question that comes up more than I would have ever expected is: Who gets security updates? There seems to be a myth that Microsoft limits security updates to genuine Windows users. Let me be clear: all security updates go to all users. Not only do all security updates go to all users' systems, but non-genuine Windows systems are able to install service packs, update rollups, and important reliability and application compatibility updates. In addition, the users of non-genuine Windows systems can also upgrade a lot of the other software on their computer. For example Internet Explorer 8 has numerous security- oriented features and improvements, and it is available to all users. This isn't to say that all updates are available to non-genuine PCs. Other value-adding updates and software may or may not be blocked, at Microsoft's discretion. On Windows Vista, available updates can be accessed through the Windows Update control panel. On Windows XP, a non-genuine Windows system can access updates through Automatic Updates, but they cannot get to any of the optional updates which are only available through the Windows Update and Microsoft Update websites. Keeping a machine up to date is one of the first steps in helping ensure that they remain reliable, compatible, and safe from threats when they are online. Some of the most famous incidents of malicious software infection have come after security updates were publicly available from Microsoft - Blaster, Zotob, Conficker and Sasser, just to name a few. I hope this clears up some confusion. Rest assured that we at Microsoft are committed to making sure that security updates are available to all of our users to help ensure a safe online experience for everyone. View the full article

Win 2k8 doens't understand DLink Network card driver
AWS replied to nyinyithann's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
Run windows update from windows 2008. It should find and install the correct drivers. -
Follow these steps to install Windows 7 from a USB stick. This method is a fast way to install Windows 7. In my tests it takes 20-30 minutes on my system to install Windows 7 from the DVD. With this method it takes 10-15 minutes for a clean install. Upgrade installs are also much faster. Follow these steps to install Windows 7 from a USB stick. You need a USB stick 4 gigs capacity or more. Once you have the USB stick you need to prep it by following these steps. Click Start > Accessories > Command Prompt. Right click command prompt and select Run As Administrator . Once you have cmd running as administrator use these commands to prep the USB stick. diskpart list disks ( this will give you a list of all disks on your system. The usb stick should be the last listed. See note and attachment below. ) select disk # ( this should be the disk number listed in list disk options ) clean create partition primary select partition 1 active format fs=fat32 assign exit . Once you follow these steps to prep the drive then copy all the files from the Windows 7 ISO to the USB drive. I use UltraISO to open the ISO and extract the files. You could also burn the ISO to DVD and then use Windows Explorer to copy the files from the DVD to the USB drive. I prefer using UtraISO since I have no use for a DVD copy. After all the files are copied to the USB stick then restart, enter the bios and set it to boot from removable disk. On most computers you can hit F12 to get the boot menu. If your motherboard has this option then select the USB disk you prepared. Windows 7 Install will start. You'll be amazed at the speed it will install. If you prefer to do an upgrade install then just open the USB drive in Windows Explorer and start the installer. Make sure you select the correct disk when you format. You could erase data on the wrong drive and make your system unbootable. If you have any problems or questions post them and I'll help you with them.

Have you tried Windows update to see if the driver is there? You could also try the Vista driver for the cards. -
No doubt about it. Way to many forums to start.

Freezind Problem with Windows 2008 Server
AWS replied to johnorillo's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
Look in the error logs to see what applications are hanging. Look in event viewer to see if the problems are writing to the logs. -
Windows 7 builds 7077 and 7105 have leaked and downloads can be found at your favorite torrent site. Build 7077 is rumored to be from the release candidate ( RC ) branch. This means RC public release could be right around the corner. There are also rumors of other builds from this branch being compiled, but, they have not yet leaked. Build 7105 was also leaked by a Chinese tester. It was leaked as Chinese language version. Since a Russia site converted it to Russian and English and released it to torrent sites. Again do a search for build 7015 at your favorite torrent site and you should find it.

I've never been able to get sound working remotely. I'm not sure if it even works. I know there is an option to enable it I'm just not sure that option does anything.
-
Not sure exactly what you're asking. Maybe you are thinking of a cluster?
-
Are you getting any kind of error messages? When you say it doesn't work what do you mean? A little more detail will help to solve the problem
-
The only thing I can think of is the high definition audio drivers are not installed correctly. Try uninstalling the device and rebooting tolet windows find and install the correct drivers.

Have you looked through event viewer? You might get an idea of what app is causing the problem or what is happening when it shuts down. Do you have any tasks that run at the time this happens?

chinese simplified 64 bit language pack
AWS replied to sravinut's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
Have you tried installing the language packs off Windows Update? -
Hyper-V has everything you need to run virtual OS. No need for for vmware and the like. I have a hyper-v server with just about the same specs as you and have no problems. I do notice a slight lag when I have more than 4 virtial boxes running at once. It is very minor and not like you describe. How much memory have you allocated to each visrtual instance?

Overview This Solution Accelerator consists of a security guide and an overview packaged in a .zip file format. The security guide is a Word document intended for IT and security professionals. It includes three chapters that discuss methods and best practices that will help to secure a Hyper-V environment. The overview is a two page description of the security guide and other virtualization Solution Accelerators that are available. Brief descriptions follow for each of the chapters in the security guide. Chapter 1: Hardening Hyper-VThis chapter provides prescriptive guidance for hardening the Hyper-V role. It discusses several best practices for installing and configuring Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 server with a focus on security. These best practices include measures for reducing the attack surface of a server running Hyper-V and recommendations for properly configuring secure network and storage devices. Chapter 2: Delegating Virtual Machine ManagementThis chapter discusses several available methods for delegating virtual machine management so that virtual machine administrators only have the minimum permissions they require. It describes common delegation scenarios, and includes detailed steps to guide you through using Authorization Manager (AzMan) and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (VMM 2008) to separate virtual machine administrators from virtualization host administrators. Chapter 3: Protecting Virtual Machines This chapter provides prescriptive guidance for securing virtual machine resources. It discusses best practices and includes detailed steps for protecting virtual machines by using a combination of file system permissions, encryption, and auditing. Also included are resources for hardening and updating the operating system instances running within your virtual machines. To view this accelerator online at TechNet click here.
