My desktop plays any downloads and itunes etc but, will not play any alert sounds such as log on or log off etc. I have checked everything I can and all seems to be in order. I have updated drivers etc but still no joy. Can anyone help please? IT used work fine! View this thread

I cannot install Service pack 1. I have formatted my PC a week ago, and 4 days later the update came for SP1. I used Windows update, like I always do, it appeared to have installed, but then a few minutes later its back on the Windows update list again. This keeps repeats all the time I try to install it.I have followed the MIcrosoft links to doing it manually, but this ends up with Stage 3 of 3 not completing,. So I end up with it back on Windows UPdate list again.I get no error codes just telling me it will not install.It is so annoying because I had it installed before the format and I cannot understand why it will not install this time. I am trying to understand what is good for my personal computer. Should I get a good Firewall? Or, should I get a good Network Monitoring Software? My understanding as of now is that either can be used to monitor the network traffic. So, either should be helpful to kill processes which are using my network bandwidth without my knowledge. Hi, I am running Windows XP with all the lastest SP and windows updates. I also have MSE and keep it up-to-date. A day ago I disabled the DCOM by following the info at this link (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825750) and then disabled the "DCOM Server Process Launcher" from the services tool. Now my Windows MSE won't update , and I get an error when I try to do so. I have since undid the DCOM disabling and re-enabled the service, and now MSE works fine (it updates now). So my question is, why does MSE require the DCOM service to run, as I'd like to disable unneccessary services to close TCP/IP listening ports and improve my computers sercurity. Thanks, R. MS Techs and Friends: I recently installed shareware (Call Station 5.5 &amp Call Soft's Advanced CallCenter ). I eventially deleted Call Soft's Advanced CallCenter and have kept CallStation (by Impulse Tech.). However, now, I have a PADLOCK ICON on my UserAcct (named Elee), and I, E Lee, am also the Administrator although when I go to control panel 'User Accts' I see an entry for both an E.Lee (Me) and Adminstrator. Everything works OK except I CANNOT CREATE A NEW FOLDER EXCEPT BY USE OF THE CMD PROMPT. Can anyone help? View the thread

I know I promised not to bother anyone any more, but I'm in trouble. Message pops up when playing pogo: Java has discovered application componant that could indicate a security concern. Contact the application vendor to ensure that it has not been tampered with. "Block potentially unsafe componants from being run?" I can't get up with Oracle Inc. the vendor. Don't know what to do. Have uninstalled Java and loaded a new Java on. Still happens. Am running Microsoft Essentials and malware checking for virus and spyware etc. "NOTHING" Have cleaned caches. While deleting an unwanted search engine, everything disappeared from desk top and program startup was saying my computer was empty. No desktop either. Had a picture on it and it was gone. What did I do or what should I do? I'm disabled and this computer is the window to my world. I "restarted" computer and everything was back , but I don't know for how long. Hello, I had to reboot my Laptop (Windows Vista) to factory setting because the system began to slow down I now can't seem to install Service pack 1, it appears on window updates again &amp again and downloads within minutes. I am running Windows Vista 64 Home Premium SP2 on an Acer Aspire 6930 with 4 gb of Ram and IE version 9.0.8112.16421. When I try to update windows, it tells me the service is not running and I may need to restart my computer. I rebooted and got the same result. I checked the services and the update service and BITS show to be running as normal. The laptop had been turned off and not connected to the internet for more than a year. This is an endless loop and I have tried at least a dozen thing to resolve and none have worked... I have done the registry hack, the steps to reset Windows Update etc.. all in various steps and nothing. Reboot, hit Windows Update and I am right back to this warning to restart to install important updates. I have seen countless people on the net with this issue and I have tried all of the various workarounds, no luck. I need this fixed. Microsoft, please respond. Also nVidia video card no longer appears under managed devices. MS Updater requests reinstalling of this update at every shutdown. Similar problem appears to have occurred in the US back in October 2012 where the down load was 171.6MB. - has an attempt been made to fix it? Have tried all suggestions under support and help but with no success. Suspect that I will have to obtain latest drivers from nVidia site and reinstall.
