Allows a system administrator to *delegate* authority, why do you ask?

Wow... what a dweeb... You have any idea what sudo is?

Let's try the Socratic method.

Does sudo delegate adminstrative rights?
Does such a delegation imply that the recipient of that
delegation is using administrative rights at least for that task?
Does using sudo for a task imply that you are using administrative
rights for that task?
Does using administrative rights for a task imply that administrative
rights are needed?

Does my having to use 200 words to rephrase a simple observation to
work around your need to impress the world with your smartass inanities
imply that you should be fitted for a glass navel?

Plus this:

1. That command will simply return help about the command. It needs
arguments.

2. It generates a file. It doesn't format a device.

I used to think "clog" was a Dutch reference, now I think it is a
plumbing reference.

Some people know enough to check the groups list, and see that it's an

I'm surprised that you're taking as truth the claims of a lying,

You need to buy a Linux System Administrator book. sudo allows you to
run a root command as a nonprivileged user.

Ex.
sudo <command>

I installed Ubuntu early this morning on an old Dell PC with a 600 mhz
cpu (!). It created a new partition and preserved the XP OS partition
and installed cleanly, without any problems. I used a CD I ordered
from Ubuntu. From the lack of Vista support I'm running into it looks
like I will be setting up my Vista PC with Ubuntu.

sudo lets you run a command AS a priviliged user....

Dude. It, sudu, allows a nonprivileged user to run a command AS root
without doing su - root. Big difference. Running a command AS a
privileged user means you are logged in as root. Don't try to confuse
noobies with silly geek semantics.

"Dude", So you are "as" a priviliged user when the command runs. No silly word
games at all.

And, in Debian, you must be specifically added to the SUDOers file.

In other words you MUST be priviliged, whether by default or not, to USE
sudo in the first place.

Do come back when you have a clue.

i love Ubuntu, there are no spy ware for Ubuntu and there is no viruses for
Ubuntu, and all the stuff on Ubuntu is so better then windows. thats if u
know how to use it, and don't whine about it, my dad is 71 he was there when
computers came out, matter of fated he was one of the people that made the
first chip. so he was so use to using old computer and when windows came out
he loved it, then when he heard about Ubuntu, he used it and love it, he has
now been using about for a year now and he hates windows.

and the live cd can't install unless u tell it to, and there are ways of
getting your info back, when i had widows xp and i installed Ubuntu, i was
ably to get all of my info back, by using tools.

so unless u love spy ware and viruses then stick with windows. and have all
of tat soft ware that u use to keep that type of stuff out take all of that
room up.

Yes, hatred of Windows is the first prerequisite for using urbuttoo.

I will not argue with that, but every OS has it's place. However, Vista is
not a scary OS, just unknown and subject to negativity. It does require
resources for the full experience, but it is worth it, if you want it. Also,
XP went through the same stigmata when it came out, it was a huge difference
from Windows NT / 2000.

Oh, and if you go and actually look, last year, there were more exploits and
vulnerabilities for most Linux distributions that there were Windows XP.
Also, Red Hat has now decided to get away from the desktop, and focus on
servers. Yes, I know Ubuntu is Debian based, and I know it is a great
resource, but there are over 200 hundred distributions of Linux, which is
what makes it such an interesting tool. But it IS just a tool, and the right
tool works for the right job.

As I have said more times than I care to count. All that matters is that it
does what you need it to do, and makes you most productive. I have used
and/or supported everything from DOS 1 onwards. Have seen these same things
said each and every time.

Unlike the zealots I actually keep up with things like this, and at least
keep and unbiased understanding of these facts. That being said, I have a
low tolerance for zealots of any stripe, and will not hesitate to point out
their errors. RedHat is finally proving that Linux is not a realistic choice
on the desktop no matter how good it may be as a server. I always liked
Mandrake/Mandriva which was/is based on RedHat. As good as it is, it still
did not allow me to be as productive as I am under MS offerings. I am by no
means an MS shill. I have had a problem with MS as far back as the OS/2 days
when they would break support of the Win16 apps under OS/2 on purpose when
OS/2 was clearly a superior product. I DO have to make a living however, and
am pragmatic. I use what best allows me to do that. You stole one of my
favorite saying in the last sentence. You always use the right tool for the
job.
