Ubuntu Destroys Hard Disks. Be Careful !

TRUE. I tried a Ubuntu "Live CD" not too long ago to see what all the hype
was about. It booted fine in my AMD 3.4Ghz + 1-Gig RAM machine that
currently has Windows XP installed. I played around with Ubuntu and it ran
OK. It was running from the CD so I could understand why it wasn't very
zippy. The video was pretty slow using the generic driver from the CD but I
could probably fix that eventually if I wanted to. It saw my NTFS drive
which was neat at the time.

So I'm done playing with Ubuntu and tell it to shutdown and it does. It
tells me to remember to remove the Live CD which I do. The next time that I
reboot my computer it simply doesn't boot. The boot sector or something was
hosed. In the end I had to re-install Windows to FIX whatever it was that
Ubuntu Live CD screwed up.

Yeah - That's a serious "bug" they have there.

Your problem had nothing to do with the Live CD. I have run Live CDs on
dozens of computers with no ill effects at all. The Live CD doesn't
install *anything* unless you tell it to and you probably did.

No problem, then, if you are simply getting rid of Windows in order to
replace it with an Operating system that actually works.

Best to over-write Windows and get rid of it for good.

If, before you do so, you save your data onto disk, it's very easy to
restore it in Ubuntu or any other Linux system, because they easily read
any Windows data format.

Well, Mister Kitcket has a point. There is a point in the Ubuntu install
(as in every Linux install) where it tells you that if you go ahead from
that point, it will erase all the data currently on the disk. It gives
you several warnings. After that, if you click OK, it will, without any
further warning, proceed to erase and reformat your hard drive!

The end result is that if a hacker got physical possession of your
computer, he could, using the Ubuntu install disk, delete all your
sensitive information! =:o =:o =:o

Affects EXT3 only and is only present in that (old) kernel. 2.6.22 is the
latest.

At least one of the bugs refers to corrupting ext3 file systems so it does
refer to what the OP said.
It is also confirmed as a bug BTW.

The problem with ubuntu 7.10 is that you get exactly the same warning screen
if you select use available free space or if you select use whole disk so be
extra careful you select the correct one as you can't tell when the final
warning is given.

The Windows Weenies are getting desperate, digging up old news. In case they
haven't noticed... the current stable kernel is 2.6.23.8. An easy upgrade
for any current distribution.

It's always wise to be careful when doing any kind of disk partitioning.
One reason I particularly like Mandriva's GUI partitioning tool is that
it's very obvious what you are doing.

That is why in commercial and similar environments, the administrator
sets a BIOS password
to stop the computer being booted from CD's, floppies, sticks etc. If
using the GRUB boot loader, this needs to be similarly protected.

By the way, a Windows installation CD is also quite capable of
destroying data on a hard disk.

How would one know the difference? Windows has a habit of destroying
itself. Sometimes Microsoft even helps.

Well, most people know enough to make a complete backup before doing
an install like this.

Still, I'm surprised Ubuntu does not at least ask before overwriting
something.

That I wouldn't install ubarktoo if it was free ?

For being over 60, kinda late in life to be discovering new OS's....don't ya
