Well at least you're no longer trying to compare Mac market share growth
to overall sales growth. That's progress of a sort.

Neither Edwin nor I provided the figures you posted, asshat.

This is one of the reasons why hitslink's figures are
slightly suspect 2.86% != 7.38%. It's worth noting,
however, that some time back hitslink's figures for Macs
were coming in at about 5% Apple is therefore indeed
growing faster than the rest of the industry (otherwise
the percentage would simply not change).

Yeah, you did.

<http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=648619>

That link says:

"Gartner Says Worldwide PC Market Grew 12 Percent in First Quarter of
2008"

And it provides the precise figures (in thousands):

Company 1Q08 Shipments 1Q07 Shipments 1Q08-1Q07 Growth (%)

Total 71,057 63,250 12.3

Sure you do, asshat. You said upstanding citizens smoke pot. You must

That's nice but it has nothing to do with your claim that - "There's no
market share sales figures for software you can get for free."

The usage of a free product can certainly be measured. But the "you can't
measure linux" is a nice curtain to hide behind to avoid admitting the
truth.

They all offer it on the server. Of these Red Hat (and Suse) recently
admitted that there's no desktop market for linux.

Why? Because you say so and it doesn't support your linux conclusion?

Windows is a pay-for product and linux is free. Yet orders of magnitude more
people use Windows than linux.
The iPod is a pay-for product. If a free alternative existed would people
still buy the iPod? (Answer - Yes, only if the free alternative was
inferior.)

That's one way of looking at it. But it's not the correct way. Unfortunately
for you, people who understand the numbers universally conclude that Apple
is very rapidly increasing marketshare.

Apple Riding a 51% Jump in Mac Sales
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/24/technology/24apple.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Buoyed by unusually strong Macintosh sales, the company grew notably
faster than the rest of the computer market worldwide in the first three
months of the year. Revenue increased 43 percent from the same period a year
ago, the company reported. Steven P. Jobs, Apple's chief executive,
characterized the quarter as the strongest in Apple's history

Other than your own mathematical ramblings, can you show a single reliable
source that backs up your conclusion? Or do you believe that the NY Times is
clueless and you are right?

Edwin, you are the one comparing apples to oranges. You are looking at
Apple's increase in market share (which you say is 0.35%), then trying
to say that the 0.35% is the increase in computers that Apple sold.
Actually, the valid comparison would be 0.35%(Apple's gain in market
share)/2.86% (Apple's previous market share)=12.23% gain in market
share.

Your welcome...

So prove my statements above incorrect.
The BBC recently pegged Linuxat 0.8 percent.
The hitsink and w3schools sites seem to agree as do many other site stats.

Your "herd mentality" theory holds no water because firefox seems to be
doing well.

The Mac is growing faster than oany other platform.
Linux desktop is still languishing on life support at well below 1 percent.

So what do you have to offer other than baseless claims and insults, Rick?

Maybe you can get Roy Schestowitz to give you the phone numbers to those
"reliable sources" that live in his head and then at least you would have
*something* to say.

Nice link. But the math....

Lets assume Vista has been out for 5 quarters and a 12% growth.

That makes about 347M PCs in the last 5 quarters.

Didn't Microsoft announce the 140M Vista recently?

That makes 207M PCs running something other than Vista in the last 5
quarters.

Nope.
The herd is still feeding on Internet Explororer.

You use the term one way to explain why people are NOT moving to Linux and
a different way to try and explain away why people ARE moving to firefox.

(1) The "Comfort Apps" are missing.
(2) The Linux community has not been very good at promoting itself. Many
people still think that Linux is this geeky OS that requires a degree in
computer science to get up and running.
(3) Since Windows or OSX comes "free" and pre-installed on every computer one
buys, No one but enthusiasts sees any reason to dump a pre-installed OS that
has "real" software available for it in favor of an unknown OS that has,
essentially, none.

I suspect very well. There is a "comfort zone" of price that people are
willing to pay. "Free" is eyed as suspiciously (or perhaps more so) as is
"too expensive."

Must be no OS or Linux. I hear Linux is hot in China and India. Lots of
people learning a real OS for the future.

Edwin, it is obvious that you are mathematically challenged, not to
mention logically challenged. I compared like to like, namely previous
market share to present market share, and showed that the Mac market
share increased >12%. Alan compared total computers sold vs total Macs
sold over time (again comparing like with like), and showed that the
number of Macs sold over time has increased approximately 4 times the
number of computers sold over the same period. We are both using figures
supplied by you. You are trying (unsuccessfully, I might add) to twist
these figures to show that Mac market share has not increased over time,
or that the market share increase has been minimal. You have failed.

Perhaps it is time you give up, or (more likely) find another nym you
can use. Though, you have been caught every time you tried the sock
puppet route.
