Bullsh*t! You don't have any idea what you're talking about.

"The Hunt Brothers and the Silver Market
Nelson Bunker and William Herbert Hunt were the heirs of oil tycoon H.L.
Hunt. The family was one of the richest in America at the time. In the
early 1970's the family decided to buy silver as a hedge against
inflation, and amassed it in great quantity. In the fall of 1979, the
Hunt Brothers, along with some wealthy Arabs formed a silver buying pool
and bought up 200 million ounces- the equivalent of half the world's
deliverable supply. The price of silver had moved from $2 per ounce in
1973 to $5 per ounce in early 1979 and then rocketed as high as $54 in
early 1980.

The officials at COMEX moved to check this cornering of the silver
market by raising margin requirements. The highly leveraged Hunt
Brothers were unable to meet their margin calls, and were forced to
sell. The price of silver fell dramatically on March 27th 1980 the
price fell 50% in one day, from $21.62 to $10.80. The Hunt Brothers were
forced to declare bankruptcy. Bache Group, which handled all of the
trades for the brothers, was financially ruined."

The US Govt had nothing to do with the Hunts, their rise and subsequent
fall, or the price of silver.
You're clueless!

So, Frank, why did you invest in silver when it was at 48 bucks an ounce?

No, they DID NOT. The government knew nothing about it. The Hunt's
simply couldn't afford to buy any more silver (to keep the price
artificially high) and everything collapsed. You are very wrong on this.

Well you can legally use the file formats that have been published and you
can use the interop functions that are defined.. you need to read them to
see if they enable you to do what you want, or you could pay someone to do
it for you.

OOXML is open, that goes over your head.

How? I am not the one trying to remove a product from the market, I like
choice, you just like one thing and don't want others to have a choice. You
probably do realise this but don't give a damn about other peoples choice.

So some company wants to add some features.. they change the file format and
its no longer the same as OO.. its still open but OO no longer works, shame.
Now another company does the same for a different feature.. OO no longer
works, shame. Being open is useless alone.

With a truly Open standard, the OO.o team could then make changes to its
software.

1. They were there first (that doesn't quite explain Microsoft's WM
formats, though, so see the next one).

2. They're pushed by the vendor of the dominant desktop platform.

3. The costs are hidden from the average consumer.

4. The costs are smaller enough to equipment manufacturer's that they
don't see a need for a royalty-free format.

Those are my guesses, anyway.

That's too bad, isn't it? Even if such claims are true (they aren't),
it seems somewhat unethical to required people to purchase a particular
vendor's products in order use the formats.

It's anti-business.
