Windows 95/98/ME Re: can not get online

After 2 days of working on this, I don't think it can be repaired. I put about blank
in the home page. Then I typed in www.dell.com and it said it was going there and it
said done, but there was nothing on the page. Ginny

AIUI, AVG 7.5 free edition will cease to be supported after August
2008. AVG 8 doesn't support Win98/98SE at all.

Anything can be repaired, but I know it's a pain in the ass. I had a
similar problem once and I finally solved it.

Here's what I'd do.

Go by a friend with a computer.
Take a flash memory stick or blank CD along to copy your stuff onto.

Download this stuff.
The latest ver of Firefox or Opera
FROM mozilla.org (firefox)
the complete download version of IE6
(see note below)
a small program called IERADICATE
FROM: http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html
a small program called Hijack This
FROM: http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
at least one spyware scanning program such as Adaware, or Spybot S&D.
(You're on your own which one you want, I recommend either of these
two that I mentioned, I run both).

Now you got some ammunition to use to fix your computer.

When you get home, run the install for IE6. Just let it do it's thing
and install to the same place you have it now.

See if that fixes it.

If not, install the spyware scan software and Hijack This. Run all of
these and see if you have any spyware.
Spyware may not be as damaging as a virus, but it can often cause more
chaos, and that is what you are having. If you dont know what the
results are for the Hijack This program mean, post them and I will
look at them.

If you find spyware, remove it.

If it still does not work, run IERADICATE. This program will REMOVE
IE6 (or any version of IE below 6 <dont know if it works on IE7>

After you run it, reboot and reinstall IE6 or IE5 from the original
Win98 CD (you can upgrade later).

Install Firefox anytime you want, at least then you have a working
browser. Or Opera if you like that one. (BOTH WORK FINE)

NOTE: IEradicate has a weird habit of moving your desktop icons around
so none of them will be where you put them. You'll have to manually
move them back where you want them. Otherwise I had no problem with
using it.

One other thing. IE6 has two different downloads available. One is
just over 20 megs, the other is something like 60 to 80 megs. You
only need the smaller one for the basic install of IE. I'm not sure
what is all in that large one. Whatever it is, I never needed it.
I cant recall where I downloaded it anymore. Google it.....

If you want to try placing the missing .dll files in the directory I mentioned
in a previous post, I've zipped them up and made them available to download for
a very brief time at:

I am not sure how to find the HOSTs file and what to do with it however.
ie6 is the only browser I have now and I do not have a proxy. but I found while
re-booting "Vortex Dos Audio driver 2.0, Interrupt 5, Ports 220-22fh dma3, Joystick
201h". I have no joystick, or Vortex and games have NEVER been played on this
computer.

Note that version 4.0 has been installed, all attempts to ignore this issue
will likely not achieve the desired results.

She does NOT have:
"MSXML.DLL, MSXMLA.DLL, AND MSXMLR.DLL."
"fILES THAT i DO have are MSXML3.DLL, MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML4.DLL, MSXML4A.DLL,
MSXML4R.DLL."

Helpers need to key upon WHY this was installed what might have installed
this was it a failed attempt and then work to resolve those issues PRIOR
to further suggestions related to other areas.

The more cooks the worse the soap, so excuse me for butting in.

( The OS is working and you are online in some ways. )
Working: NNTP, SMTP and (POP3 or MAPI).
Faulty: HTTP using either IE or Firefox.
(IOW, websurfing and [HTTP-]downloading isn't working.)

The HOST file was discussed elsewhere. I don't remember seeing if
a software firewall have been excluded as the culprit? It kind of
is its role to stop some communication while allowing for other
kinds.

(Farfetched) Assuming broadband, can a router possibly have been
compromised or just started malfunctioning with regard to HTTP
traffic, while allowing communication over the other protocols?
Have you connected the computer directly to the /broadband-modem/
if that is a separate piece of hardware?

(Butting out again.)

1. Press the Windows key + F (or just go to "Search")

2. Type "hosts" (without quotes) into the search window.

3. Press <Enter>

4. At least one file should be found. It is Hosts.sam (the "sam" extension
stands for "sample")

5. If you have another named just "hosts" - no file extension - that is the
Hosts file. You can open it and read it with a text editor if you wish. It
has a twofold purpose firstly, one can put various frequently used websites
in it so that the domain name (something.something.com or .net or .gov or
whatever) doesn't have to be looked up at a domain name server so it can be
reconciled to numbers thus loading the site more quickly secondly, "bad"
sites can be put into it with the reconciled numbers set to 127.0.0.1 like
this...
127.0.0.1 dclk.net
127.0.0.1 doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
That number directs your browser to your own computer so any site that has
the 127.0.0.1 will never load.

6. If you have a hosts file you might try renaming it to something like
hosts.old and see if your browser will then work. If not, name the file
back to what it was.

This is, admittedly, a long shot but it can't hurt.

Most of those MSX*.cab files are IE6 files. Here are the ones I have, (&
they also are in IE6 .cab's)...!...

C:\>dir C:\MSX*.* /a /s /on
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

MSXBDE40 DLL 229,648 06-03-99 12:00a MSXBDE40.DLL
MSXML DLL 495,376 08-17-01 12:00a MSXML.DLL
MSXML3 DLL 1,122,304 08-29-02 12:00a MSXML3.DLL
MSXML3A DLL 24,576 01-07-02 4:30p msxml3a.dll
MSXML3R DLL 44,032 01-07-02 4:30p MSXML3R.DLL
MSXMLA DLL 15,360 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLA.DLL
MSXMLR DLL 26,624 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLR.DLL
7 file(s) 1,957,920 bytes

Looks like she has extras -- those ML4's -- which suggests something has
corrupted her IE6. But it wasn't avast!-- because I have it but none of
those extras!

I'm think, & will post something to her shortly.

It is true she doesn't quite match up-- but it's crazy to just rename
these files! The error messages would just get worse! Also, it could be
harder to effect a fix! For instance, if ever we get an over-install of
IE6 to run-- it may refuse to update a phony, renamed file because it
has a later version number or date! Or, if ever we discover what to
uninstall to remove the ML4's-- it won't remove a file that has been
renamed!

I see you also have said...

"The three files that are missing are MSXML.DLL, MSXMLA.DLL, AND
MSXMLR.DLL.
fILES THAT i DO have are MSXML3.DLL, MSXML3A.DLL, MSXML4.DLL,

MSXML4R.DLL. I was wondering if other people had these files and if
someone had put
numbers in the files ie: missing MSXML.DLL......haveMSXML3.DLL."

The three that are missing are definitely IE6 files-- I see them in IE6
cab's using WinZip. Here are all such files I've got...

C:\>dir C:\MSX*.* /a /s /on
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

MSXBDE40 DLL 229,648 06-03-99 12:00a MSXBDE40.DLL
MSXML DLL 495,376 08-17-01 12:00a MSXML.DLL

MSXML3R DLL 44,032 01-07-02 4:30p MSXML3R.DLL
MSXMLA DLL 15,360 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLA.DLL
MSXMLR DLL 26,624 08-17-01 12:00a MSXMLR.DLL
7 file(s) 1,957,920 bytes

It looks to me you don't exactly match up!

(1) Are you sure of your version of IE, does it
say IE6 in the About box?
(It looks like you may have some IE7 files--
which certainly do not belong in Win98!)

(2) When you tried IE6Setup.exe, did you check to include only
the items that were not shaded in the components box?
Supposedly, those are the ones you've already got, & you
would not need to go online for a download. (However,
I'm not sure it really works like that.)

(3) Do you have an option to "Restore the previous Windows
configuration"...?...

(a) "START, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,
Install/Uninstall tab".
(b) Scroll to...
"Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools".
(c) Click the Add/Remove button.
(d) Bolt "Restore the previous Windows configuration",
& click OK.

If you have that & it works, then try the IE6Setup.exe again to get back
to IE6. Report back.

Here's something to check...

Proxy server settings for Internet Explorer when using dial-up modem
Internet connection...

1. "Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections tab".
2. Select your dial-up connection from the list,
& click on the Settings button.
3. If the option "Use a proxy server for this connection"
is checked-- uncheck it.
4. Note: If you use multiple connections, repeat from
step 2.

If that gets your NET working...

(a) Still we must solve the problem of screwy IE6 .dll's.
(b) We may want to revisit your proxy settings, if you
decide to reinstall avast!

Bingo! Give the man a cigar, or whatever. A firewall that was a 30-day demo
and its time was up. Plus Spybot Tea-Timer, plus a lot of other yuck. All
cleaned up now, Avast! installed, IE working, FF gone, and Ginny can tell
the rest of the story. Now it's a case of testing things out for a while.
