Technically they are just opinions. That doesn't make them right or wrong but
they are hardly lies. I see first hand the problems that users have with XP
and now Vista. I see this every day. They are almost always very trivial
things that take a minute or two to sort out. Now throw in a variant of Linux.
They will be even more lost. Without some massive change in public perception
and education they will never make a significant dent in home sales as Windows
software has. I bet if you took a clipboard in to your average high street and
asked random people if they had heard of Linux, even throwing in a range of
distros, and you will get blank looks. Ask them if they have heard of
Microsoft or Windows and I suspect your answers will be slightly different.

What most Windows users want is fairly obvious: XP!

Then it might be a different story. I make my living with Microsoft
products, but if I had to pay, then I would pay. When I retire I might
ditch Microsoft but thats a ways off.

Statistics can be used to say almost anything. Fact: you didn't hear
much about Linux on XP General from it's inception until a few years
ago. You didn't see much about it in the mainstream media. Now you do.
You couldn't get a preinstalled Linux machine easily back then. Now you
can. Ever hear of trends? MS is on a trend, too, down the slippery slope
of holding your paying customers in total disdain.

As long as the gaming industry for PCs continues to drive hardware development
I don't see that situation changing any time soon. I've never worked for a
company that hasn't used Windows for its OS, either desktop or server. Well,
that's not quite true. About 10 to 12 years ago for an old company we had a
Novell mirror server installed. But certainly nothing since.

To the point where they would rather pay more for a Mac.

It doesn't say much for Linux that people would rather pay more than a Vista
box costs than go for the FREE option, does it.

Consumers want a polished product.. take note.. MS is not finished yet, not
hardly..

Probably because Linux notebook manufacturers sometimes forget to install drivers?

So you, too, have a reading comprehension problem. Again, no one was
talking about Linux three years ago and now everyone is. MS is not
finished, nor did I say it was. I wrote, and I quote, "MS is on a trend,
too, down the slippery slope of holding your paying customers in total
disdain." This means they are on their way out, not out already. Rome
didn't fall in one day either.

If what you say about a polished product is true, Linux will be the
dominant OS quite shortly being as it isn't vulnerable to malware or
suffer from BSODs like Windows does.

I have been installing Ubuntu now on computers for almost two years.
Those who insisted on keeping Windows have been back numerous times
because they need me to can clean up their machines that are constantly
infested with malware. Those who have Ubuntu have not had that need.

Nothing wrong with my comprehension that Mac is outstripping Linux even
though Mac is more expensive than a Vista PC.. this puts Linux in LAST place
still, even though it is FREE..

Last place, Alias, despite all of your efforts here..

Your reading comprehension is totally skewered by your ill informed
bias. A trend doesn't mean first place. People were talking about Macs
back in 84, it made the mainstream media and movies were even made about
it. So, naturally, it has grown some. Linux is just now getting the
mainstream media attention. Do you get it yet?

Ill informed bias? Apple is ****-a-hoop re their increased Mac sales. Don't
blame me for people wanting something decent even though they have to pay
more for it. I don't publish the sales figures.

Let people make their own choice instead of bludgeoning them with XX days to
go before yet another 'more of the same' Ubuntu version.

Your own personal campaign is doing nothing for the sales and use of Linux
other than getting people to look at Macs.

It is a three horse race, and Linux for desktops is the one running on aging
wooden legs.

I'm no fan of LInux on the desktop but there are two factors to
consider here. First, Macs have a very serious, very expensive
marketing effort behind them. That's the ONLY reason Apple has gone
belly up. It's worth noting that Linux has as far as it has with no
marketing at all.

Secondly, Linux has taken over the web server market - a very
important market - despite massive marketing and pressure from MS to
stop it. Facts are facts: Linux is a solid product that has acquired
its position simply based on an ability to do the job required.

MS retains pre-existing market position only based on sheer size and
deep pockets: if a smaller company had come out with Vista (without
the ability to force vendors to sell its latest OS), they would be
filing for bankruptcy.

Vista is a flop and reflects MS's inability to produce quality
software, to listen to its real users, or to simply act in a
reasonable manner towards its customers.
