People just hate Linux

"Real World" experience shows that new notebooks preinstalled with Linux are returned
four times more often than those with Windows. This would indicate what others
have already noted, many consumers pick up the cheaper systems and then realize that
the Linux system is not what they are used to so they return it.

The main cause [of the higher return rates for Linux-based machines] is Linux.
People would love to pay $299 or $399 but they don't know what they get until
they open the box. They start playing around with Linux and start realizing that
it's not what they are used to. They don't want to spend time to learn it so they
bring it back to the store.

Clearly, Windows is far superior to Linux is the "Real World" of computing!

Without reading the article and assuming the above is quoted from the
article, just hope Microsoft and MVPs and their diehard supporters could
remember and learn from it and understand that it's a normal behavior and
stop flaming people for being too lazy to learn anything.

It could work for you (as in this case) or against you if you are too
ignorant to know.

Exactly, these people want to keep the general public in complete ignorance
so that they can make huge profits for themselves.
I couldn't find anything difficult in learning Linux system and its a
wonderful system to work on it. I enjoy computing more now than before, only
regret is "why didn't I switch earlier".

Because you couldn't have handled the command line versions?

Hits the nail on the head.

Linux is a nightmare.

Configuration files all over the place, each with its own way of
configuring -- e.g. it's like going the odyssey journey just to trying to
change the screen resolution. What, there's an applet to do it? LOL Tried
that and that's what frigged it up!

Linux is a headache. Updating a typical Linux install can involve many
hundreds of megabytes of updating if not gigabytes. And pray that the buggy
updater doesn't fail - 'cause Linux updaters do - spectacularly. Which means
a re-install, device configuring and trying the updater again. LOL. What a
nightmare.

Linux is ugly. How come in a few short months Apple can make Unix sorta
polished looking albeit in a monochromatic boring sort of way, yet all these
years KDE and Gnome for Linux remains really ugly like it's Windows 95's
cousin with acne? Ubuntu Linux, the one they are currently pushing for the
desktop, is so hold-hands-in-a-circle politically correct ugly that you
wouldn't want to touch it with a ten foot pole. Yuck.

Linux is so badly supported it's amazing that .. well, it's so badly
support that it's even a credit to the ingenuity of its supporters that
anything runs with it at all! But when you go get your new handycam or new
printer, the manufacturer will not be supporting Linux. So a Linux user will
have to write their own device driver, or hope that some other Linux user
will write one for free in the next few months or couple years ... or just
be willing to do without and to get in the car and return the equipment.

On the other hand, if the Linux user really wants the hardware to work, the
Linux user could reformat the hard drive and install Windows [an operating
system for real computer users not university snoots trying to out do each
other in the politically correct department]. With Windows, the drivers for
the hardware will all be available and the operating system will be easily
configurable. What did you expect?

> Just read the article..

I read it, so there are two questions:

1. Is ZDNet an objective publisher and can we trust their comments? In this
case, its main point is that Linux is not ready to replace Windows. In
other cases, its blogs and comments will criticize Windows and Vista while
people along a few MVPs will flame them for they are not a trustworthy
publisher.

Will you say that they get paid to say something good about Windows?

So is it a creditable publisher or not and can we trust this article with
the same standard?

2. What Carey said: "They don't want to spend time to learn it
so they bring it back to the store." It's not too far away from the reason
and isn't it the same reason for many reverting back to XP?

Keep doing changes without solid and productive reasons will help Windows
become more and more alien to their users and will it be just like when
people pick up a Linux box and need to learn it all over again?

So should it be like what I originally stated that it should be a lesson to
the company too, especially when they already learned some from Vista? And
that people don't want to WASTE time on learning something they have already
learned is also seen in the story?

Oh, horseshit.

And what exactly were you trying to configure that required
hand editing?

I'm sorry, but that's also horseshit. Yum, aptget, and the like
are far more reliable and flexible than Windows Update, and never get them-
selves in a state that requires manually editing a system registry to be
able to continue (As in "can't apply update update in progress").

Size of updates? Ever looked at XP service pack 2 or IE6?

Here's a good example: Install DX9 on a fresh XP install. First
you have to find it. Then you'll be in a web loop because clicking the
"download" link brings you back to the page you started from but you'll figure
it out eventually by searching technet for dx9 downloads. After you download
it it's pretty easy to install because you just have to find the file and
execute it then answer a bunch of ridiculous questions and reboot.

Now, compare that to "yum install emacs".

>a re-install, device configuring and trying the updater again. LOL. What a
>nightmare.

Having updated tens of thousands of linux systems (yes, tens
of thousands) I've never seen that happen. Were you using an X86 based
system or trying to port to some obscure architecture?

>Linux is ugly.

It's simple. No one needs stupid special effects on an OS gui.

>Linux is so badly supported it's amazing that .. well, it's so badly

I'm sorry, but that's horseshit. Linux forums have actual technical
information, while Windows forums are filled with "That happens to me too!
Let me know when you figure it out..." Niether is supported by the "vendor".
Unless you pay them.

>the manufacturer will not be supporting Linux.

Horseshit. Most hardware vendors explicitly suppport linux, and
of those that don't a driver exists for the majority.

Computing is not just Windows and we all have our personal preference for
general use.

Carey was quoting from the article..

Some go back to XP because programs they use are not supported in Vista.

Some go back to XP because they can't find a way to turn UAC off..

Some go back to XP because they do not like change.

Some go back to XP because they have been scared into doing so by all of the
FUD, most of which is old and where many of the early issues have been
fixed..

Perhaps you might like to outline the changes you see as so difficult to
learn in Vista. Where a new Vista user has not heard all of the FUD, there
is a tendency to get along very well with it..

Who needs to use a command line? That is so 1980's! No wonder why
Linux/Ubuntu is only on less than ONE percent of the desktops. It is
cryptic, doesn't work with the most popular programs out there and it's
FREE. Imagine a FREE product that NOBODY wants. You would think that WORD
OF MOUTH would propell this product into greatness with everyone rushing to
get it.

Got news for you. Nobody is rushing to get Linux/Ubuntu on the desktop.
Just isn't going to happen. Ubuntu is good to do a few things like Alias
has shown. You can post annoying messages using Ubuntu and calculate maybe
10-20 numbers in their spreadsheet, write a simple letter to MOM, and draw
stick figures in their presentation software.

Leave Ubuntu to the geeks who can't get laid and for real work, use
Microsoft products.

People hate Linux

There is a computer super store proudly presenting Ubuntu pre-installed
systems on display in my neighborhood in UK. Well, these are the signs of
things to come.

Those signs will disappear soon enough. People would rather pay more for a

Since when are you welcome here? NOBODY wants to use Ubuntu on their
machines because Ubuntu is FREE and NBODODY wants it on their desktop.
Ubuntu is just a toy OS for geeks who have trouble with their social skills.

To do real work you need a real operating system. Microsoft supplies those
Operating Systems.

Imagine, people would rather PAY to use Microsoft products then to use FREE
OpenSores products. That should tell you what you need to know about Ubuntu
and the idiots who try and preach it here in vista land.

The times they are a-changing. Billy boy isn't, though.

It's true if your "work" consists in playing video games.

I know it's small and never said it wasn't.

You'd be surprised how many emails I get from interested parties.

Keep telling yourself that and save your money for Windows 7.

I am using Ubuntu inside Vista installation using liveCD, its
fast, uninterrupted internet connection and I haven't touched Vista for a long
time. You must try the amazing Compiz-Fusion,it will enhance your computing
experience.
