My, a drama queen who has to be in everyone's business, because like I
told you, this NG is the only thing you have going on for you. It's sign
of your advanced age with nothing to do.

No, stupid it's a <PLANK>. A <PLANK> is a soft logical <PLONK>. You are
hard <PLONKED> in my good newsreader.

In this newsreader, I issue <PLANKS> because I have to keep an eye on
all *clowns* like you. You have read it before fool about me having to
keep and eye on *clowns*, and there is no typo. :-P

Oh, so you did it on purpose. I *was* trying to give you the benefit of

I use Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4D, and 3D Studio Max for a living.

None of these work in Ubuntu from what I can tell. And I haven't found
an equivelant program for any of them on the Linux platform.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and I am glad that things worked out for
you, but Linux has a LONG way to go before it can even think about
replacing Windows for many Power users.

And responses such as yours only serve as a "negative" image of Linux
among many people, not a positive one. If you truly wish to win more
people over, you should consider a more positive approach.

Honestly, it depends on a person's needs.

As a strictly office type platform, I can see Linux and various open
source applications as being perfectly acceptable. OpenOffice is
actually pretty darned good.

I daughter is too young to be all that interested in gaming, so my old
computer is in her room running Ubunto with OpenOffice for her homework
and Netscape for browsing the Internet. I went that direction because I
don't need to worry about her installing applications without my
knowledge. And 90% of the flash games she does play work just fine.

If my father didn't like to play so many games, I'd switch my parents
computer over to Linux as well (they are retired). My mom literally
does NOTHING on it except for browsing the Internet and using WebMail.
And my father plays games and browses the Internet. Since most games
are for Windows.... sigh.

The reason why I use Windows as my primary OS is because I run software
that doesn't run in Linux and there are no equivelants in the Linux
world. If there were, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Most of my software is available on the Mac and I'd switch to a Mac if
all of the plugins I have for PhotoShop and After Effects worked on the
Mac platform.

There is a place for both. And I just think the people who are posting
all these Linux promotions in a Windows newsgroup are going about their
crusade in the wrong way. And when I read their posts, I view them as
more negative and elitist than they probably are meant to be.

I guess you're stuck with Windows then. Most people don't use those
programs. The fact that the vendors of those programs don't port them to
Linux is not Linux' fault nor does it mean they can't be ported.

Oh I agree. Given that Adobe is able to compile their product line for
the Mac, you'd think it they'd be able to compile it for Linux as well.

Although, maybe they can and have (internally) and just don't see a
market for it...

I know of a couple of companies that tried selling their products to the
Linux market and found it to be an unfriendly one. Too many people
expect everything to be free in the Linux world.

Still, a number of others have been successful, so I guess it's just a
matter of how you go about doing it.

Who would want to "support" software for Linux ?
Linux guru's support linux servers, and all is well.

But desktop installations of Linux ?
Support Nightmare.
No two Linux installations are identical ... and with users kernel compiling
, hacking there is no telling what they have going on.

Linux is its own worst enemy.

Alias, you are the idiot.

You would have me trade great MS software that I have used for years for
unproven, untested, unused Linux software.

You have some agenda to unseat Microsoft with Linux.

I just want my PC to work, and it does.

Nice try, but I'll decline the use of Linux.
If I ever decide to become a communist loon, then I'll use it.

Yet MS dominates !

People use what works.

Freely giving Linux away has done nothing.

Giving away junk is nothing new.

But when junk decreases in use, it's less than junk.

It's Linux.

The reason I say that is because my work is unproven, untested so Ubuntu is
great for me.

Microsoft does write good software but I am so stupid I can't figure out how
to get my simple copy of Vista working.

Only because it is preinstalled on most any PC you can buy, you
clueless dummy. If Windows has to stand on it's own and EARN market
share by competing with other OS's it would be at best a also ran.
THAT is why Microsoft strong arms companies like Dell and HP making
sure Windows is installed by default.

Vista doesn't work reliably. That's the point. It constantly complains
and needs to shut down or claims it can't do what you ask it and worse
it won't do what you tell it. It is always nagging and bitching about
something moronic like file permissions and ownership. Nobody with a
brain has forgot we got to this sad state due to how stupid Windows
was designed in the first place making Windows a hacker's paradise to
mess with. UAC is just a Band-Aid to attempt to patch the Hover dam.
Windows is so riddled with security holes you have to be a damn fool
to even think of running it without anti-virus, malware protection and
probably behind a firewall. All that is due to sloppy design decisions
over a decade ago. Of course if you're a clueless MS fanboy you
blindly accept all the BS Microsoft shovels your way.

Actually, the home/student versions of office are reasonable as
is Visio. (Visio's expensive but you get a lot and the alternatives are
equally dear). SQL Server is very competitive with similar systems, and
there's no substitute for Exchange in a small campus group mail situation.
(If you think Exchange is overpriced look at Lotus sometime, and the open
source groupware suites are either Exchange clones in linux or don't offer
a tenth of the functionality)

None of these programs are especially buggy, either.
