Honestly, it depends on a person's needs.
As a strictly office type platform, I can see Linux and various open
source applications as being perfectly acceptable. OpenOffice is
actually pretty darned good.
I daughter is too young to be all that interested in gaming, so my old
computer is in her room running Ubunto with OpenOffice for her homework
and Netscape for browsing the Internet. I went that direction because I
don't need to worry about her installing applications without my
knowledge. And 90% of the flash games she does play work just fine.
If my father didn't like to play so many games, I'd switch my parents
computer over to Linux as well (they are retired). My mom literally
does NOTHING on it except for browsing the Internet and using WebMail.
And my father plays games and browses the Internet. Since most games
are for Windows.... sigh.
The reason why I use Windows as my primary OS is because I run software
that doesn't run in Linux and there are no equivelants in the Linux
world. If there were, I'd switch in a heartbeat.
Most of my software is available on the Mac and I'd switch to a Mac if
all of the plugins I have for PhotoShop and After Effects worked on the
Mac platform.
There is a place for both. And I just think the people who are posting
all these Linux promotions in a Windows newsgroup are going about their
crusade in the wrong way. And when I read their posts, I view them as
more negative and elitist than they probably are meant to be.
