I downloaded the chipset software and installed it. Then I went to
the device manager and changed all the USB drivers to Intel.
Rebooted. Still hang. I don't know if I've done the driver update
correctly.

If it was done corerectly then there would be no yellow "!" or "?" [ exclamation or
question ] marks in Device Manager.

If the copy process is still problematic after that, then it isn't a driver issue.

Well I regularly backup my files (250MB to 500MB) to a USB flashdrive
with SP4 and have never encountered a problem, so your problem has
nothing to do with Win2k. Sound like a driver issue. When you look at
Device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus controllers", are there any
red or yellow warning markers? Is "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host
Controller" (USB2 installed) shown?

Finally have a look at this website which should provide a solution.

When you say 250MB to 500MB, are you referring to file size or the
total number of bytes ? My files are > 500MB or > 1GB.

No yellow or red error warning marks.

From your earlier post you clearly have your PC configured for USB2 which is
compatible with USB devices. Your drive will only makes use of USB, not USB2
as that wasn't around then, so it's a much slower device. You should see
'USB mass storage device' under Device Manager, when it's plugged in. Double
click just to make sure it's shown as working properly. You should also see
a separate category 'Storage Volume' which is your listed USB device. Check
that this is also working properly and whether Device Manager can actually
show the actual name of the manufacturer of the device in 'location'. Also
ckeck that the device has been digitally signed when you look under the tab
'driver'.

Finally, r.click My Computer/Manage/Disk Management. Check that the drive is
shown correctly (when connected), particularly its size is being seen by
Win2k and correctly described.

My USB is 2.0 and my drive is also USB 2.0.
I don't see a "Storage Volume", is it because I'm using Win2000 ?
The drive is correctly sized.

My USBStor.sys is dated 11/14/1999 version 5.0.2183.1. What is the
latest ? If outdated, where I can download the newer one ? Can't
find it on Microsoft website.

I found a USBStor in driverguide. I tried to see if by replacing it
would solve the problem. But I cannot replace it. When I copy over
it, I keep getting the old copy in windows/system32/driver. What is
the right way to replace the usbstor.sys ? Thank...

Some USB ports don't seem to perform up to spec on particular computers,
IME, as to the power requirements of the USB drive. This would explain
yours working on one box and not another. Try a power adapter or a
powered hub and see if it works.

You don't need to update it. Win2k provides all the generic drivers for
your device.

No. I have Win2k. How does Device Manager describe your device? Does it
tell you the manufacturer, whether the device has been digitally signed?
The best way to tell is unplug your device, look at DM, then plug in the
drive, and see what extra device description is seen. Mine shows up as
'Storage Volume' with 'Generic Volume' sub-categorised. It's within that
category that DM gives the full description of the device with a correct
description of driver provider (in my case Microsoft). It's also seen
under the 'Disk Drive' heading with a correct description of the
manufacturer.

You should not need to download any extra drivers for the device. Win2k
SP4 own generic drivers should suffice.

Device Type: Storage Volumes
Manufacturer: Microsoft
Location: Volume Manager

Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 11/14/1999
Driver Version: 5.0.2183.1
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows 2000 Publisher

There are 3 buttons. The Driver Details is blanks out. So I cannot
click on it. I can click on Uninstall & Update Driver.

How the above ? Any problems ?

The driver details are blanked out which tells you that extra drivers
are not needed. The Location should have given you the manufacturer of
the disk. I'm a little suspicious that all you have is 'Volume Manager'.
What details are you shown in DM under Disk drives, when you click on
the drive, and are the manufacturers shown for your all HDDs? Is USB
device shown as 'working properly'? Have you checked 'Properties' (click
My Computer/Drive letter for USB drive)? Is the correct disk capacity
correct?

Hi Frank
I just checked my office machine. It also says "Volume Manager". I
tried copying to USB but I didn't have this problem. I will go back
and check the PC for the other questions you raised. Thanks.
