I see you are running an outdated browser. FF 56.2.5 End-of-life 56.0.x product line on November 14, 2017. You should be running FF 64 or ESR 60.4. If you don't like FF Quantum, try other browsers that have been patched.

Here is a list of 5 that do not keep logs and verified to be true. You don't want a VPN keeping logs of sites you go to. Some claim to keep no logs but they actually do. No Logs VPN Services That Have Actually Been Proven True I'd probably try them all and see which I preferred. I'm not sure if there is a trial period. If not, you'd have to try each for a month then switch to another. On another forum, in the linux section, members were discussing PIA, the last one on the list. It seemed to be favored by 3 or 4 people in the thread.

I use only one computer (out of the 7 in our home) to do online shopping and banking. It is hard wired to the router. I have never used a VPN. I haven't had a problem yet.

Windows 7 Updates - are they going out with a bang?

Hah, apparently the Patch Lady tried to install the October updates and discovered what I posted earlier. Patch Lady – 7 Metadata problems @ AskWoody -
Windows 7 Updates - are they going out with a bang?

No, I'm not suggesting a problem on your end. This is all on MS's end. If they knew that 3177467 was needed before updates would work, why didn't they offer it alone, have you reboot then offer the other updates. Many people had trouble getting Sept. and now Oct. to install yet MS waited a long time before it was mentioned that the Servicing Stack Update aka 3177467 was the issue. -
Windows 7 Updates - are they going out with a bang?

IMHO, the "check for updates" is broken. An update that should be installed to fix updating should have been show by itself. Apparently this isn't happening. Rather than trust MS to show me what is needed, I read a few sites and depend on the pros there to tell me how to proceed. -
I refuse to send an attachment to a phone - that's not the purpose of a phone! Phones are for calling or simple emails, without attachments or text. I sent an email to a friend this past week - no attachment. She replied on her phone (she doesn't own a computer) and it was a simple 2 sentence reply.

Windows 7 Updates - are they going out with a bang?

Trust me, you need it. All iterations of the Servicing Stack retain the original KB number 3177467. Susan Bradley is renowned for getting to the heart of Windows patching. She is a MS MVP Susan Bradley - Third Tier (there is a Canadian physician with the same name.) Small Business Susan She no longer writes for WindowsSecrets Susan Bradley | Windows Secrets so I can't link to the article she wrote in 2017 mentioning 3 patches that all Windows 7 users should be sure are installed. They are 3020369, 3177467 and 3172605 You can now find her at askwoody Patch Lady – 31 days of paranoia – day 12 @ AskWoody Look at the items under Executive Summary here, if you want a 2nd opinion Microsoft Windows Security Updates October 2018 release overview - gHacks Tech News Just google the update, set the time for the past week and you might find other articles telling you to install it first. -
Why are you sending "documents" to a phone? You send text messages to a phone, not doc or docx items. I've sent texts to someone's phone when they do not have a computer. How to Send Text Messages Via Email (SMS & MMS) Send a pdf if you want to send something really long to a phone. Of course, I rarely read on the phone when I have computers and tablets. My Samsung tablet came with Word and Excel.

Windows 7 Updates - are they going out with a bang?

The Servicing Stack update, 3177467 should have been installed first. MS should have offered this alone and first and only after that was installed, offered the other patches. 3177467 came out in Sept. 2016 and I didn't install it. It was updated in Oct. 2016 and I still didn't install it. I used to get a WindowsSecrets newsletter where Susan Bradley, who now posts at the Ask Woody (Woody Leonhard site) as the Patch Lady said in May 2017 that there were 3 patches Windows 7 users should have. I then installed 3177467 at the end of May 2017, after checking my history to see if I had the 3 items she recommended. I assume because of this, and the fact that I go to the catalog and grab the Security only patches, I haven't had a problem. Note: I have yet to install October's patches. MS releases them, discovers there are problems so MS pulls them then re-releases them and hopes that the problems are fixed. If not, they are pulled again. (Windows 1809 has been twice so far). Since I don't want to be a beta tester for MS, I wait until the end of the month, image our four computers then I install the patches. -
For me, it would end up being more expensive. For $35/month, I get unlimited talk text and 5GB of data. This is grandfathered from VirginMobile (sprint/boost). There are no overages. If I exceed 5GB, then the speed drops. Comcast wants $12 for each GB. If you don't use much, you save but go over 2GB and it would cost me $36. That's more than I currently pay and for less data. I also know VirginMobile has great coverage on the East coast. I've been with them since about 2006 and the only place I had no cellphone coverage was in Bar Harbor Maine. That was in 2009. They probably have coverage there now. (I had a phone with only cell service, no wifi ability).

No problem for me.

I'm trying to reduce FUD on the internet. Now lots of sites will repost the Forbes article and home users will think that their Windows 7 computers will stop working on January 14 2020 unless they pay MS. (Has this happened with XP? No, there are still XP computers working even though support ended over 4 years ago).
-
No, that Forbes article is missing an important piece of the puzzle. Microsoft plans to sell post-2020 support for Windows 7 The Spataro quoted above is Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Office and Windows Marketing. And here is what he posted on September 6th. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/blog/2018/09/06/helping-customers-shift-to-a-modern-desktop/ Home users won't be able to pay for extended support.
-
Are you sure that this fee is not for businesses with volume license keys and those people running Windows 7 Enterprise? They are the only ones who can get patches for Windows 7 through 2023. I suspect it doesn't apply to home users who can't pay to get patched after 2020. If I'm not mistaken, something like this was done under XP for businesses who were slow to move to Windows 7.

My husband is using my old flip phone and really likes it. Since neither of us text, it isn't a problem.

I don't use the gmail app. I also never sync anything. (We have 4 computers and 3 android devices and I don't want everything on all the devices). I actually fire up gmail through a browser then we have to enter username (we have 3 accounts) and password. That would be a work around.
