Good luck as well. It never ceases to amze me how many people never update and when you ask them when the last time they did they look at you with the deer in headlights look. My father in law is like that.

Microsoft's 'One Windows' -- What It Really Means
AWS replied to allheart55 Cindy E's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
They have been leaning this way for a while. I think they are at the point now where it is a reality. I have no problems with this way of thinking. -
You know you're making me spend a ton of money don't you.

I haven't run an anti-virus other than Windows Defender in a while. I do have MalwareBytes paid version installed too. Windows defender and it do the job for me.

Win 8.1 HP Pavilion s-1217 can not find Canon printer
AWS replied to Knives4Less's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
I think maybe the tech meant it can't use IPV6 as IPV4 is the standard. If your computer couldn't use IPV4 then you wouldn't be able to use the internet at all. Check you network adapter settings and make sure IPV6 is enabled. It should be by default. If it isn't then click add protocol and add IPV6 support. I had the same problem with a Canon printer. It worked fine while I was using Windows 8. Once I upgraded to 8.1 I could no longer connect to the printer. I completely removed it from device manager, uninstalled the drivers and removed all reference to it in the registry. Rebooted in safe mode and installed the newest drivers. I rebooted in safe mode so Windows wouldn't automatically install their drivers. Once the driver was installed I rebooted again and the printer worked. -

New Android Ransomware Locks Device Completely
AWS replied to starbuck's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
When I had an Android, my last was a Nexus 1, the first thing I did was root it and clear off all the junk that the carrier added. Like you said you get a mini computer that runs great. -
You should be able to upgrade the to a newer card as long as the motherboard supports newer models. Since video cards are in themselves mini computers with their own memory and processor it is the single best upgrade you can do to an older computer.

This is a great deal. Samsung makes quality drives and the price for 250 gig SSD is very good.

A run down memory lane. I remember when I was accepted as a Windows beta tester when Windows 3.1 was going into beta. I still have the acceptance letter and the install floppies that were shipped with it. I remember the Windows 98 test which was the first time the Microsoft beta site was used. I got a mail with my user name and password to access the site. I also remember starting the download at night when I went to bed and by the next afternoon you'd have the files to install. It's a shame they did away with the private Windows beta tests. During the Windows 7 test it was pretty clear we were on our way out. Unlike the other version tests where we got access to every build even alphas we got access to only 2 builds while MSDN had all the others. I still beta test for Microsoft. I'm in the Office test group and .Net Developers group. I'm just not as active as I was. I might check Connect the new beta site once every 6 months to see what was added to my dashboard.

Windows 9: Start Menu To Return, Rumored To Be Free
AWS replied to allheart55 Cindy E's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
I don't have a problem with Metro. In fact I was one of the few that actually liked it even on my main box. I love it on my Surface 2 and I am seriously thinking about a Windows phone. The new start menu takes the old and adds new too it and MS did it well. It will improve and once it does I bet it brings all the people that hate Metro and stayed with Windows 7 to Windows 9.- 9 replies

New Android Ransomware Locks Device Completely
AWS replied to starbuck's topic in Tech Help and Discussions
This is one reason why I switched from Android to iPhone. Not saying the same thing can't happen. It's that the APPs developers have to apply for a developers license and then once accepted any APP they make has to be approved. While anyone, as far as I know, can submit an APP for Android. -
I read about this at Broadband Reports. While this guy took it over the top the reps are supposed to try and retain customers. One anonymous ex-employee said they could lose their job is they lose too many customers in any given month. I went through something similar years ago when I cancelled my AOL account. As far as Comcast goes I have nothing but praise for them. This site and all my sites are on Comcast Metro-E fiber.

This sounds to be nasty. I know the Russia hackers have a name for themselves the last few years. Every bad thing that happens in the virus world seems to come from them.
