  1. And... WHY your server keeps disconnecting from your DC?! Can you see something in the event viewer? I don't think there's a setting to decide how / when the connection happens. It should be constant or "on demand" but anyway I don't think you can manage it manually...
  2. I had the same problem with official microsoft's forum... they give you links and link and links... but not a solution... Anyway... Maybe I found something interesting from what you just posted. Open Active Directory Sites and Services, expand Sites > Servers. Can you see the old server there? If yes, if you expand it, is there a "NTDS Settings"? Now expand the new DC, right click on NTDS and select properties. Make sure that GLOBAL CATALOG is checked, if not check it and restart your DC. Then click Connections (the next tab) and tell me if you see something under REPLICATE FROM / TO.
  3. You can run 32 bits OS on 64 bit CPU (because of a CPU CAN SUPPORT 64 bits, that means you don't have to use it ) ) You CANNOT run 64 bits OS on 32 bit CPU. Regarding your downloads, I use the eopen service from microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/ To be honest, I think you could download also from torrents, you just have to use a VALID and LEGAL serial key (provided by MS). Anyway, downloading this softwares from torrent can be dangerous, do it at your own risk.
  4. Ok, replace DC* with you domain controller's name. Then replace the domain controller's name with the old domain controller's name (I know it's turned off, but do it).
  5. is there any particular step / problem you have to do while importing / exporting with cvsde? I'm telling you that because "many" people want migrate from 2k to 2k8 but they use a 2k3 domain in the middle to be sure everything will work fine. If you tell me this solution works fine, in the next few days, I will test it in a testing environment. Let me know!
  6. I don't know if the first part will work (import users and so on...), because I never tried before! Anyway, if the domain name, the server's name and IP will be the same... yes, you shouldn't have problems. Let me know, I'm very interested in your results.
  7. So you are ok :) YOU DON'T WANT TO RUN DC ON WIN 2k8 RIGHT? If you just need to JOIN like a workstation, you don't need anything else :) Anyway, take a look here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708131(WS.10).aspx You will find what I just told you and also how to join to win 2k3 dc as another DC )
  8. And MAYBE you're right. But I can't be sure and if this is not your case, you don't have to seizing your DC. So let's try other (and safer) test before. Post results: netdiag.exe /v repadmin.exe /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite Thanks and sorry for all these tests, but it's not really easy to solve this kind of problems.
  9. ok first try this: run services.msc and find NETLOGON, be sure it's set to AUTOMATIC (start) and not Manual o Delayed. Now open the command prompt and type: net start netlogon If the error code changes, post the new one, else, check the event viewer to find something more detailed (actually I don't now what does "100" mean...). If you don't have errors, start w32time again and tell me the result.
  10. Ok, something didn't worked during the migration... You have multiple problems, first of all you have services which aren't running: ntds kdc w32time netlogon Try start the manually and check if you have any error. By the way the most painful problem is here: Warning: DcGetDcName(PDC_REQUIRED) call failed, error 1717 A Primary Domain Controller could not be located. The server holding the PDC role is down. The last part is telling you the problem: "The server HOLDING the PDC role is down", this means your DC (big-ring2) doesn't know that big-rig is no more there. Take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504 I'm just guessing what's happened during migration...
  11. No, it's not needed, just make sure your 2k3 server supports 2k3 clients and above (not only 2000).
  12. When you say "are unable to view certain reports" you mean that from the webpage you can generate a report? If so, check the event log of the server and clients, it can be a problem with some component which is missing.
  13. Nice, but this means you have a problem with DNS...
  14. Mhhhh that's strange, can you post the output of "dcdiag"? Also, open DNS Manager, right click on your server and select PROPERTIES. Then click on FORWARDERS tab and tell me if there's something in there. Here's another topic, check if you did all the process, it's like the new DC doesn't know the old one doesn't exist anymore... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverMigration/thread/592c270b-aa7b-4fe5-a230-5b8ae88483a0
  15. I just know that you can set the MAXIMUM option on a particular app which means it will start maximized. Some applications support command line parameters (like windows size and so on). I don't know which is your app, I just found this software: http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/download.asp *** I NEVER TESTED THIS SOFTWARE BEFORE, I DON'T KNOW IF IT WORKS ON WINDOWS SERVER *** Let me know.
  16. Hi there, Let's start from the end: Waring 5139: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc560969(office.12).aspx Error 5002 is usually related to the Windows Activation Service (WAS), but I can't tell you anything more until you tell me: 1) Have you made any modification before this error? 2) Can you post relevant event viewer's logs? 3) Are you able to start the service manually? If not, do you receive the same error? If yes, the error(s) in event viewer is/are the same?
  17. Hi there, Are you talking about a specific application or not? Because from what I know, is the application itself that "remember" the last position, not windows.
  18. Well you don't have to install roles on the secondary, simply run dcpromo...
  19. You must run DCPROMO from the secondary! When you say: "I reached installing the second DC" you mean you have installed only windows or also other roles?
  20. Hi maverick, Exchange 2007 and above ARE ONLY 64 bits! You MUST have a x64 OS and of course a x64 CPU.
  21. Once the server is up and running is replicated with all the objects present in domain. Anyway, open the event viewer and check for DNS errors, also use this guide too: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd673658.aspx Finally you can use NETDIAG (I really don't understand if it's supported or not by Srv 2k8...). If you don't need IPv6, disable it, sometime it can cause problems. If your old server is turned off and you don't have troubles, you can simply demote it. I can't see where you could have troubles!
  22. You can simply add a DNS entry which redirect the old name to the new one. Instead of change the name which is not a great idea (for me). You can redirect also the IP. I don't know the expiration time of your domain, but you can do some tests for example by turning off the old server and from a client try this: ipconfig /flushdns nslookup a ">" appears, type: server IP_Or_Name_Of_Your_New_Dns (better the IP :P) then try: set type=all NameOfAMachineInsideYourNetwork then try: www.google.com If you have responses, it means your dns is working fine.
  23. Yes the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) is submarinefastfood.com in this case. Regarding the IP class, it's hard to say... it only depends on HOW MUCH is "LARGE COMPANY".
  24. When you move the primary domain, everything goes to the new server. For example in my case, we moved from 2k3 to 2k8 and we changed also the domain name. Anyway the domain is still the old one, this is not a big problem. What you can do is to set client's dns to point directly to the new server, regarding stored credentials depends on what you have to do. For example if you have a network drive which is mapped with stored credentials, you must remove and re-add with the new domain if you really need this. For example: OLD: MyUser@Old_Domain.local NEW: MyUser@New.Domain.Name In order to change that property, you can use a GP script which can looks like this: set LOGONSERVER=\\YourNewServer Or if you prefer, remove clients from domain and rejoin... I hope this can help you!
