Will Macromedia Flash ever run with Vista?

You can't access the content of numerous sites without the Flash plugin for
your navigator.

Flash doesn't work for me, nor for numerous other contributors to various
forums. Too bad for sites that are trying to sell me something.

The Adobe site says Flash doesn't always work with Vista. They propose
various kludgy solutions that don't work either.

I guess everyone is just getting used to industry-standard applications that
don't work.

Flash and vista iE7 did have some problems.. but now they are all resolved
with the new player

If you use firefox Flash works always...

Post some urls' that don't work for you. So we can tell if it's Flash or
your system.

Actually, the Flash plugin does work with the 32-Bit Internet Explorer
7. I have yet to see a Flash-enabled website that didn't work (unless
there is a fault on the specific website itself).

If you are running the 64-Bit Internet Explorer 7, then we are all out
of luck, as Adobe has not released a 64-Bit Flash plugin for IE7, and
you can't use 32-Bit plugins with 64-Bit IE7.

If you cannot access Flash animations, then either you are running IE7
in "Safe Mode" where all extensions and plugins are turned off, or you
have specifically turned off the Flash plugin. Click "Tools"->"Manage
Add-ons"->"Enable or Disable Add-ons" to check if the "Shockwave Flash
Object" is installed and enabled.

This is all strange and new information for me.

First off, Flash is a browser plugin. It shouldn't care what the OS
is. It should care what the browser is. So the OS is irrelevant.

Secondly, there is no 64-bit Flash. So if you're talking about 64-bit
Vista with 64-bit IE7, then no, Flash won't work. Mind you, there is
no Flash player, at all, for *any* 64-bit browser on *any* platform.
Yes this means Linux too.

Third, Flash has no reason not to work in IE7 32-bit on Vista. The
only mention I see at Adobe's site of Vista-specific issues involve
UAC, which can be resolved by installing with "Run As Administrator".
Note that Flash on Linux won't exactly let you install most plug-ins
in the browser without authenticating against root, so this is not so
much a Vista problem as the installer just wanting permissions it
doesn't know how to ask for. Newer versions, of course, resolve this
issue.

I don't use 32-bit IE7 for my normal browsing, but I always fall back
on it for the inevitable Youtube or other Flash link. It's absolutely
never given me a problem in Windows, in any version.

In linux you have the alterinative GNASH player that can be compiled and it
works with 64 bit.

Well you are a newbie... Vista had big problems with flash player, this
newsgroup was plagued by hundreds of people asking for help about this..

And that is total crap. The lack of plugins for the 64 bit browsers is
inexcusable. I have emailed Adobe repeatedly, excoriating them for this
failure. Maybe if they got 10,000 similar emails they'd get off their asses
and write some code. It cant be that hard.
 
When I try to go to www.wendys.com I am told:

Wendys.com uses a version of the Flash plugin that may not match the current
version on your computer. Please update your Flash plugin now:

telling me I need Flash 7.0 or greater. I have 9.0.115. I get this message
on some sites and others the flash player works flawlessly. YouTube give me
no problems whatsoever and Adobe reports the player is installed correctly.

Since the "get ready for SP1" update I have had trouble with Flash on many
sites.

Not sure what download caused the trouble since I got 13 or 14 the same
night..

I have Vista home Premium 32 bit, 2gb ram and a nvidea 8800gtx. All
drivers/software are current.

I know of gnash, and I did not mention gnash, because I am talking
about Adobe Flash Player.

Gnash however is still in a very early phase, and as such it's support
for files typically played in Flash Player isn't perfect. Their own
current FAQ has a section entitled "Why doesn't Gnash work with
YouTube?" Regardless of how old the FAQ is, this is the capability
many normal people want in a Flash player, and if gnash cannot do it,
they (and I) do not want it. Seeing as there's no development being
done on a Windows version, the point is moot, since that means it
can't run on IE7-64bit or Windows Firefox 64-bit.

I bet the vast, vast majority of people who didn't have any problems
installing Flash Player, never posted asking for help with it. I was
also here well over a year ago and I don't remember "hundreds of
people" having Flash problems. But then again, it's not like the
Vista upgrades were smooth sailing on many fronts.

I had no problems installing Flash Player in Vista a year ago.

I hear you. The fact that Vista 64-bit has been out for over a year,
XP64 for what is going to be it's THIRD year, and Linux for about as
long, without even any kind of BETA for a 64-bit Flash Player is just
plain pathetic. It ain't like they are coding an OS or something,
it's a damn browser plugin.

Microsoft that installed an old version of Flash... wait....

That site works fine for me. Try uninstalling any Flash versions you have,
then reinstall direct from the Adobe web site with the latest version.

It hasn't always worked with Vista.

There were troubles in the beginning and I suspect the trouble that some of
us are having now stem from the recent updates required for the release of
SP1 and specific hardware/driver configurations.

I am certain that this will get fixed so long as folks go to Adobe and let
them know there is a problem. May even take care of itself with SP1 being
released in a few weeks.

Again, I had no idea there was ever an issue with Flash and Vista.

I've been using Flash under Vista without issue since mid 2006. It's going
on 2 years of using Flash under Vista.

Now, I've only used Flash under Firefox and IE7, so if there is some other
configuration you're talking about, then again I have no idea about it.

So is Adobe Acrobat. Industry standards are created by industry. These
things become industry standard by means of clever marketing in the
corporate sector, with givaways like Acrobat Reader that everyone can have.

There would be no objection at all if Adobe's giveaways were a bit more
reliable and hassle-free than the average corporate package. Example: for
many years I have used Acrobat at work (big multinational company) and at
home, and with XP it hangs at least once every day.
