Actually, sounds more like a PC administered by a 50 year old with no clue
about computers.

Most 13 year olds I know are more savvy.

I think it's you that needs to do more research. Just googling something
with a keyword and finding an article that essentially says that those bots
listed target Windoze boxes doesn't say much for your research abilities.
Please find an article where a Linux box is infected by one of the
mentioned bots and how that is done. Good luck.

Cheers.

Last I checked, .exes don't work in Linux. If you double click on them,
Linux just says "WTF?"

So - as always - the lesson is keep your OS and apps up to date. Keep
your AV up to date.

So?
What has that to do with opening an email attachment.

Very true but a lot of people (most?) don't know about that and can only
use the computer and not maintain it at all. This computer (XP Pro) had
not been defragged since its installation (over 10,000 fragmented files,
even XP recommended a defrag). I asked her about it and she asked, "What
is defragging?" I asked her why her firewall was turned off and she
asked, "What's a firewall?". I asked her why her resident AV scanner was
disabled and she asked, "What's an anti virus program?" She also didn't
have a clue as to what Windows Updates was or how to use it. She thought
that Windows were something that reside on the wall of her apartment.

Now that she has Ubuntu, she knows to always click on the little orange
star if it pops up and to only install apps from add/remove. She need
not know anything else.

Hah! You prat! Read my message: I did a full Kaspersky scan after playing
around on the so-called dodgy site.

In the previous thread I described how I've done three on-line scans each
year from the major AV vendors, and they have all reported a completely
clean PC. Ditto with PC Tools Anti-Spyware.

Don't slag people off without knowing the facts.

I'm prepared to bet that you've got NO experimental evidence whatsoever to
demonstrate the need for AV software. You're just mindlessly repeating the
marketing paradigm.

I, on the other hand, have done the experiment and got the data. I CAN
speak from the evidence.

SteveT

There have been loads of security patches to the various Linux distros over
the past year or so. It's stupid to claim that ANY of the three big PC
operating systems are secure.
