Toshiba Satellite win8 booting problem?

I know the banner say "update to 8.1" however it is an upgrade really because it is an OS all to its own being saold that way. That is why the codes for 8.0 do not work on 8.1, because it is not really an update, they couldn't.

I've always been told that the HDD is unrelated to a linux OS and is one way to know if the HDD is bad [if the linux loads and runs properly]?
Hi I'm new to the forum. Well actually I was a member before , but left for awhile. It's true that Linux loads from RAM and doesn't need a working HD.
If the HD is not completely toasted, you should be able to boot with a Linux OS, but that does not mean that your HD is not going bad. You could have bad sectors that are causing you grief and a HD that is getting ready to fail. IMHO you should try a chkdsk. If you can't do that, then I suggest seagate dos to check your HD. These are my opinions and they might not be shared here on the forum. Linux is great for recovering data on a HD that won't boot into windows.
I realize that this is a old thread, but this is my 2 cents on this subject!
