Before spending money on Vista I thought I'd see if I can't obtain a disk
from someone I know and give it a test run. Turns out someone I know had a
disk and let me borrow it. I figured, the 30 day trial is plenty of time
for me to figure out if I need to actually spend any money on this. Man,
am I glad I did this prior to spending money.
I have to say, I actually did say "Wow.......this is pathetic."
But hey, at least I had Wow in the sentence right?
Results:
- Sound does not work out of the box, though this has got to be the first
time I actually have seen the online driver search function work and find
a driver. So it worked after that...fair enough.
- Video does not work beyond 1024x768, latest drivers. Dealbreaker right
there. Google reveals that I'm not the only one with the issue and
apparently the only fix I've seen so far is to use the VGA output instead.
Difficult to do with a video card that only has DVI outputs, not to
mention that I run a dual monitor setup and need both my outputs no matter
what the type. Not even manually choosing the "1600x1200 Digital Flatpanel"
driver fixes this. So yes, I tried.
- My *MICROSOFT* Keyboard is not recognized correctly. It's a Japanese
keyboard, I select "Japanese" layout...and it does not give me a Japanese
layout no matter what I do. What else beyond selecting "Japanese" as my
keyboard type and layout am I supposed to friggin do?? Call bill gates?
Again, dealbreaker right there if I can't properly use my keyboard!
- Looking into the device manager I see about 4-5 other devices not
supported, including my SATA controller. Hard drive does obviously work
since Vista is running but I wonder if it was running at its optimum
performance seeing that the device manager was complaining about not
having a driver for the controller.
At that point in time...I just stopped and booted back into Ubuntu where
all of the above things just worked out of the box....and tomorrow I'll
temporarily disconnect my other hard drives so that I can reinstall XP and
be done with it. At least XP works with my less than 1 year old hardware
and at least gets my keyboard layout right half the time.
Oh and btw, did anyone ever tell Microsoft that we have more than 16
colors these days? Their OS installer is awfully unaware of this apparently.
I mean seriously, THIS is the best Microsoft can do??? THIS is supposed to
be progress? Advancement?? It can't even work correctly out of the box
with my very up to date hardware!
I seriously gave it a try and approached it with an open mind. Had I
actually spent 259 or worse 399 on this man would I be pissed right now.
