SnagIt 8 anyone ?

I apologize for using this forum for something that is unrelated to
Vista.
I have been looking for a better screenshot device/program, and I came
upon this SnagIt8. My problem is after capturing the image and pasting
it to a wordpad or equivalent, I couldn't find a way to copy/paste to a
post like this one. The Paste was always grayed out when I tried to
paste it here. Either that, or I would have an empty box with a red X at
the top. I can't use the paperclip icon either, because people who
clicked the link would be asked to join something before they could see
the screenshot. Anyone who uses SnagIt8 please show me the way. Thank
you.

something in Word, notepad text on the Net, :
1 Select it,(highlight it in colour) with the mouse cursor
2 Hit Ctrl + C
3 Go to where you want to place it(for instance, right here!), insert mouse
cursor
4 Hit Ctrl + V

Because you need to be using RTF (Rich Text Format) or HTML to do
that.

Usenent doesn't support such formats so just forget about it.

Thank you. I was afraid something like that being the reason. What a
shame, that SnagIt8 was so promising.

Hello Nonny,
There is still certain puzzlement perhaps you can help me understand. I
used SnagIt8 to capture an image, attached it to an e-mail, sent it to
myself via Windows mail, and I got it pronto. Now I log on to Windows
Mail newsgroup and I can't include the same image on my" reply to the
group" which comes in a form of an e-mail ?? What a screwed up
arrangement.

Email messages and newsgroup postings can be sent in different formats,
usually text only or HTML (rich text). The first one is exactly what it
says text only, no images, formatting etc. The latter is the same as you
find in web pages. Images can be inserted, fonts and colours altered and so
on.

On the Usenet, ie. newsgroups, text-only is the format in use. It is the way
business is done here. If you like to attach a picture to a newsgroup post,
upload it to a web server like ImageShack and include a link to the image in
the posting.

Thank you, Charlie42. I'm using ImageGrotto for quite some time now. I
just thought I could get a better software to enhance my screenshots.
Should I blame MS for being so cheap or out-dated ??

I assume that you are using Windows Vista. Have you tried the Snipping Tool?

There is no use in pointing fingers at Bill Gates for the technical
limitations of newsgroups, which is not a Microsoft technology. The Usenet
has been part of the Internet since the late seventies, and remains mostly
faithful to it's chosen text format.

Of course, newsgroups do not compare well to modern, shiny web forums, but
then again web forums do not compare very well to the efficiency of reading
and posting with a newsreader like Windows Mail.

As for the built-in Snipping Tool in Windows, I am quite happy with the
improvements Vista offered. Of course, SnagIt or similar programs will let
you do a lot more. I guess choosing which one to use depends on what your
needs are.

If you really want to include pictures in newsgroup postings, you can go to
the Format menu > Rich text (HTML), and next choose Insert > Image (in
Windows Mail, other clients have similar options). This practice is frowned
upon, though.

Hello Charles,
Yes, I am still using snipping tools, which is why I have been looking
for a "more advanced" program to improve my screenshot quality. I do not
and can not draw "free hand" for an arrow nor highlight a phrase or
sentence Professionally, and those were just rudimentary. SnagIt8, for
example, can capture pages of documents with LIVE links. Meaning you
could scroll up and down the pages, click on any links you want, and
that's just the screenshot of the original. But what the hell! It won't
work in WM nor Vista x64 forum. DAMN!!

Couldn't you use the 'save as' option, save the file as jpg or something
similar and then 'attach' the file to the post?

I use SnagIt quite a lot (the latest versions Snagit9 is even better) and I
can't say I've come cross any problems such as you describe. I ether paste
results directly into documents/WebPages or save them. If I need to email
the screenshots I use the 'email' option on the main Snagit 8 toolbar (on
the 'Send' tab in Snagit 9)

Hello John,
I won't be able to explan intelligently because I know Nothing about
internet. From what I can gather, "gateway.com" has everything to do
with my problem (read my header). If I do the attachment method (which I
did with snipping tool), anyone who wanted to click the link would be
asked to join membership or something before he/she could see the
attachment. Someone introduced me to ImageGrotto Free Image, and that's
the only one which could go pass the usenet or gateway.com, or whatever.
One more thing, I read the "help" or tutorial section numerous times.
It says after I've captured the image, I can copy/paste to the
presentation. THAT's not true. At least I am not able to. I can do "save
as", and I know where it will be saved to, but I can't copy/paste. If I
use ImageGrotto, all I get is an empty box with a red X at the top.
Nonny said something about "rich text" which usenet is unable to handle.
Hope It makes any sense to you.

I'll just add the following to that :

Html messages, whether sent by E-mail or as newsgroups postings, can
contain a lot more than images and fancy formatting. They can also
contain instructions with malicious intent.

That means that you are at risk every time you open such a message.
For that reason, I have all html capability turned off in both my
E-mail client and my newsreader. Many other people do the same, so
t-4-2 should note that many of us won't see his image regardless of
what he does.

Hello Ken,
I understand what you are saying. However, in this Vistax64 forum, or
WM newsgroup, the idea of it's conception is to help someone in need,
and share one another's knowledge ( or at least that's how I perceive).
What is more Successful to teach someone than with a picture of
illustration ? There must be a
happy medium. Well, I have always been a dreamer, so said my mother.

Word of advice based on about 17 years on the Internet and maybe 15 of
that using Usenet:

Usenet users have gotten along JUST FINE without images - either
inline or attached for the approximately 30 years Usenet has existed.
If you think images are important to your message (most folks don't
find the need) then find a free online service where you can upload
images or pictures and provide a URL to those when you post here.

It's simple. It works. And you don't have to try to reinvent the
wheel.

Ugh! I now see that you are using one of those disreputable services
that suck up legitimate newsgroup postings are republish them. You'd
have a much better experience if you would access the newsgroups
directly using a newsreader. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

Besides your own personal experience using such a service, you should
also be aware that some participants here won't even answer a message
from you if they see that comes from such a service.

Pictures are sometimes useful, sometimes not. It depends entirely on
what's being discussed. In the enormous majority of cases, no picture
is required.

But as far as I'm concerned, I won't deal with pictures presented in
the newsgroups. I'm not willing to incur the risk that viewing them
entails, and if that sometimes means that I can't help someone because
I can't see his picture, so be it.

It's Brink's (the MVP wannabe) site. Keep that in mind when voting
comes up.
