Ok, I'm right on target with this. How about running Defrag, Disk
Cleanup and Check Disk? Also since I no longer have a 3 1/2 A:\drive
although it still shows it should I remove the cabling to it when I
switch the old hard drive to the slave connection or just leave well
enough alone?

Robert

1) The A: Drive cable: If you do not plan to use it, remove it.
one thing I would is use a black marker to mark the cable orientation in
case you ever need to install it, make it a whole lot easier to reinstall
the cable to the motherboard. I put a small black stripe on the side (edge)
of the cable that faces down towards the bottom of the case.

2) Disk defrag: Once every month or two should be fine. I let my PC go for 8
months as a test case and then defragmented the drive. The results... no
noticeable improvement.

3) Disk Cleanup: Once a week and or prior to Defragging the drive.
In my case I also use Cleanup prior to creating an Image Backup of my C:
partition.

4) Check Disk: Should not need to run this except prior to performing a Disk
Defrag.

Just to let you know, I did reconnect the old hard drive to the slave
connection and disconnected the A:/ cabling and marked it(although I
don't think I will ever use it again as that fomat is more or less
obsolete). I then tried to format the old hard drive but it was
unsuccessful. So I opened it back up and disconnected the old drive. I
think I was right about it having a problem and was a good thing I
replaced it when I did.
I also noticed while in Admistrative Tools/Disk Management that the
LG DVD/RW drive is displayed thus:

CD-ROM 0
DVD(D:)

So I guess Microsoft doesn't see it as a DVD/RW drive otherwise
shouldn't it say something like:

DVD/RW 0
DVD(D:)

or am I wrong?

What does it show in Device Manager - Properties ?

The Device Manager shows it as DVD/CD-ROM and when I click on the +
sign it shows the drive and when I click on properites it shows:

HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L

Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufactuer: (Standard CD -ROM drives)
Location: Location 0(0)

Says that the device is working properly.

I clicked the Properties tab and all it shows is the volume and that
the CD audio is enabled.

I clicked the DVD Region and it shows that the region hasn't been
selected and that I can do this so many times until it reaches zero
then it I can't change even if i reinstall Windows. I was going to
change it to the United States but thought I better ask about this
before doing so or should I just leave it alone?

I clicked Volumes and apparently its for use when theres a CD or DVD
in use as its fields are blank.

I clicked Driver and it says that it isn't digitially signed (I found
earlier, that this is why Microsoft doesn't reconize this drive as a
DVD/RW drive and said that when the next service pak comes out it will
rectify this). It also has information on Driver Provider, Driver
Date, Driver Version 5.1.2535.0, Driver Details, Update Driver, Roll
Back Driver, Uninstall.

I clicked Detail and it has the following:

HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L

and below that a box with Device Instance ID highlighted with a down
arrow which when you click it opens up a menu of sorts. Below that is

IDE\CDROMHL-DT-ST_DVD-RAM_GSA-H55L________________1.03___

I have another question if I may(I know this must be getting old and
perhaps I should start a new post but not sure whether you'd see it
since there's so many)
If I do have any other questions I'll post them with Attn: Wally

On Disk Cleanup I have the following checked:

Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files

my question is, should I check anything else or is the above ok?

You should use Crap Cleaner instead of the lame built in XP cleaner. Get
it free at www.ccleaner.com/ Do NOT use the Issues feature. You can
configure it to not nuke cookies you want to keep for logging on to
sites like Yahoo and Google.

Alias

Those settings should be fine for Disk Cleanup 90% of the time.
I also use CCleaner which has far more capability but it's has some risks so
if you decide to use it, know what you are selecting to delete before you do
it. If you have questions ask!

Better safe than sorry. Looks good to me, although I must confess it's
been a while since I've used Disk Cleanup.

I use CCleaner and watch carefully what it wants to dump.

If I want it to leave certain things alone, there is an option for that.

No problems so far.

Remember to use ERUNDT and learn how to use it to back up your registry.

Clean everything except -compress old files-
Below is a web page on how to remove compress old files from
disk cleanup.
I have been doing this since using Windows 2000 Pro.

CCCleaner is a completely diferent species from Disk Cleanup.
