No one really knows how many people are running Linux but you can bet the
numbers you hear are low. And of course Microsoft likes to talk paid
subscriptions without disclosing how many Vista's sold in the bundling
method actually called home to update last week. In fact, I would not doubt
1/2 the claimed Vista OSes sold, are not running after 30 days if they ever
registered at all.
About the articles criticism of Linux and wireless. Being a Linux advocate,
I admit this is true for at least one popular chip set vendor, Broadcom.
Broadcom is in many products, and even though Broadcom has their reference
systems for these chipsets in Linux, they do not release the HAL and code.
One can only guess why, but many believe it is for favourable MS driver
support/treatment.
But on the bright side, there are a few well supported wireless chipsets out
there. Atheros based ones being my favourite. My AG650 and others do quite
nicely in fact. I also hear good progress has been made with Intel wireless
chipsets. The trick here is research the wireless first. If it isn't Linux
supported, don't buy it.
Fortunately, I picked my most recent system very carefully, making sure
every component worked with Linux, Vista and XP x64 as with the hype and
issues, I wanted a fall back if I didn't like Vista. Unfortunately between
the time I bought it, MS pulled the XP x64 media download. So now waiting
for Fedora 9's release to make it my main machine, my personal favourite
Linux. First thing my wife said, was that was fast and a clear screen after
I loaded the Fedora 9 beta. It is too. Like lightning.
