OK--The Floppy Disk Drive Question

DaffyD®

I'm running Win 98SE. I recently replaced the power supply on my computer,
going from a 350W to 400W. After I plugged everything back in, the floppy
disk drive kept turning like a cd drive and the fdd light on the front of
the computer stayed on. Now, I've gone through almost all the
tests--checking the Molex connector to be sure it's in there correctly;
making sure the fdd ribbon cable red wire side is connected to pin 1.
Making sure the power supply is in there properly. I tried flipping some
connections around just to see if that would fix things--nothing. I even
bought a new fdd and installed it, again making sure all connections were
correct, and still had the same problem. I've disconnected the drive so
that I don't hear that frustrating "whirring" sound and see the green LED
stay lit.

I don't know if installing the power supply damaged the fdd controller or
what the deal is. The drive worked fine before the new PS.

Oh, and thanks to all of you who responded to my first question.

Merry Christmas Daffy,

That's an indication that the ribbon data cable is reversed ( pin 1 on wrong side )
on the floppy. Although many FD's have a notch and 1 pin removed, and many cable
connectors match to it, not all do and the cable is easily reversed mistakenly.

Plain and simple...the floppy ribbon cable is reversed.
Flip it around and do nothing else.

Floppy drive light ON all the time usually indicates the flat data ribbon cable is
plugged into the drive backwards. What you think is Pin 1 on the drive may not be.

Yup!

I think I must agree with the others, DaffyD®! You must unplug it &
stand on your head while plugging it in again! But, if that fails to
work...

Right after replacing the power supply, was this the only hardware
problem that showed up? Did Windows have to redetect any drivers during
any boot after the power supply was replaced?

If all else fails, it's worth a try to...

Boot to Safe Mode (Hold F5 or Ctrl as you boot), &...

(1) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab"
(2) Open the "Floppy disk controllers" branch.

If there are more than one controller in this branch, you may have
a "ghost". Therefore, delete them all, & reboot to Normal Mode. Point it
to the folder that contains your .cabs, if asked.

But, if there is already just one driver there, then...

(3) D-Clk the controller that appears under it for Properties.
(Mine is "Standard Floppy Disk Controller".)
(4) At the Driver tab, click the "Update Driver" button.
(5) Click the "Next" button.
(6) Bolt "Display a list of drivers...", & click "Next".
(7) Bolt "Show all hardware".

Examine the screen. Mine is "Standard floppy disk controllers" in the
Manufacturers (left) pane & "Standard Floppy Disk Controller" in the
Models (right) pane. But I have four other choices there in the left
pane-- including "Compaq". As one clicks them in the left pane,
descriptive info shows up in the right pane. Perhaps, state what you
see. It could be worthwhile to go to another and back to the original
just to shake things up. To switch, select one, & click "Next".

(It seems odd mine is the Standard & not a Compaq controller. But, all
is working well, & I will let that be.)

It might also be useful to check what the BIOS sees for the floppy,
and check elsewhere in the BIOS to see if it is enabled.
Certainly if it is plugged in wrong (light on and constantly running
indicates that is the case), the BIOS will not "see" a floppy drive.
As far as "red stripe" on the cable goes, it can be plugged in wrong
on either end (plugged in wrong on both ends is the same as being correct).
And it does not hurt to make sure the cable is fully seated on both ends.

Stand on my hand? I think it would only make matters worse if I had to flip
the data cable around using my feet.

Thanks for the other tips, PCR.

Re: OK--The Floppy Disk Drive Question--Reply To All Who Responded

My thanks to you all for coming thru, as always.

What's strange in this situation is that I never touched the ribbon cable
during the power supply install. I did unplug the molex connector to the
drive and that was it.

I have also tried flipping the ribbon data cable in all configurations and
it didn't make any difference. That's why I was wondering if it was the
controller. I've also checked the bios and things looked ok there. I'll try
the ribbon cable again and the other suggestions and report back.

Re: OK--The Floppy Disk Drive Question--Reply To All Who Responded

If the light stays on all the time no matter which way you turn the data cable, it's
possible you are not getting the cable plugged in securely. You may need to push a
little harder when connecting the cable.

Also, make sure the molex power cable is connected right side up and firmly seated.

Make sure you have the data cable aligned properly to all the pins on the connector,
with no pins bent to the side, and that you are not plugging the cable in off set so
that you are not on a couple of pins at one end of the connector.

It's also possible the controller board on the drive got damaged when you were
switching the molex...they can get loose and then crack.

I agree with all of that. Others, like glee, have often said to check
that BIOS is seeing the right size floppy drive, if there are choices in
there. Even my own Compaq BIOS seems to have a section for that!

I did say "head", as Baer has pointed out. You can still use your hands
that way! (But wait for them to heal now.) Anyhow, I was only agreeing
with Brian A. & the others on that one! (Now/then I do borrow their
ideas. In fact, the rest of it may have come originally from them too.)

| Thanks for the other tips, PCR.

You are welcome, & I hope something will solve it. Also, Baer may be
onto something-- check that BIOS is seeing the right size/whatever
floppy.

You are welcome. One final thought, going by the symptom you report that
there is a constant access of the floppy drive...

(1) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab"
(2) Open the "Disk drives" branch.
(3) D-Clk the floppy drive that appears under it for Properties.
(Mine is "Generic NEC Floppy Disk".)
(4) At the Settings tab, ensure "Removable" is unchecked.

(It just sounds as if that might relate.)

Re: OK--The Floppy Disk Drive Question--Reply To All Who Responded

How do I know if the molex connector is right side up? Does the red wire go
on the lefthand side?

I'll give this a try and report back to the group. I may need to break into
the box again which I hate to do since it's very old somewhat difficult to
maneuver around inside without pulling out other power ribbon cables. I also
need to unscrew expansion cards from the back of the box if I need to slide
out the motherboard to give me even more room inside to poke around.
