| As a non-techie, I continue to use Win98SE with great success on a P3
| 600, 256 megs, Radeon 7000 32 megs, ultra lite cable internet with
| Avast 4.8 which Avast recently updates for me, works great. Along with
| Super AntiSpyware Free, Spyware Blaster, Sygate Personal Firewall,
| Firefox, HiJack This, RegSeeker, CCleaner, my computer seems to be
| very safe.

Sounds like you have the plan.

Users of 9X/ME can feel somewhat more secure, at the moment, than users of
other Windows, as most of the present hacks and attacks are levied at the NT
OSs. Of course there are still viruses being produced, and the old
backorifice and other hacks are still rampant on the net. And, most of the
email/like hacks are just as effective on 9X/ME as any other OS. So, as has
always been the case, never ASSUME you are protected, even if you seem to be
running the necessary programs. Cross checking with other protection
products may catch things that were missed by whatever was installed and
relied upon.
Of course, updating - keeping the programs current, is mandatory, along
with checking any logs you or the program creates..

| Donna's
|
http://msmvps.com/blogs/donna/archi...sional-aavmker4-sys-privilege-escalation.aspx

She too is saying Aavmker4.sys is the vulnerable component. But there is
no such file in my avast! 4.8.1169 for Win98. And there wasn't any in my
v.4.7.1098, either. Also, Donna says... "Solution: Update to version
4.8.1169." She doesn't say to upgrade, although she does post the site
for the full download, yea.

| As far as overinstalling the new version vs updating the old version,
| I took that from some Avast Support page IIRC.

I'm thinking that might apply to XP &/or Vista only, which are
irradiated OS & naturally may need an upgrade.

| You can post your Avast questions to the official forum:

I see lots of new posts there. It will take time to read through them--
but thanks!
