: 4MB of RAM???? Are you sure??? No wonder you're having so much trouble.
: Minimum requirements for Windows 98 is 16MB, 32MB if you want to do
: *anything* besides watch it start up.

Angel, I'm in the middle of updating a new installation of Win98SE and when
I went to Windows Updates, I, too, got that failed installation. Twice. Then
I went to Adobe.com and installed the latest Flash Player, then went back to
WU and the Update was no longer offered.

My guess is that the original Flash player that's installed with Win98SE
isn't new enough for the update, and the latest version of the Player put in
a "flag" that says for Windows Update to consider the patch installed. I
suggest you follow the instructions Robear's gave you for cleaning up after
the failed installation, then go to Adobe.com and get the latest Player.

And, Angel, get a wireless adapter for that machine, OK? You already have a
wireless access point (2-Wire router). Get rid of that awful dial-up.

PA Bear,

I went into the Find F/F and discovered that the Flash Player was 'Swflash'
Version 5.0.44.0. DOS name SWFLASH.OCX

I had a problem with the Media Player 9. It kept coming up with the 'flag'
"Illegal operation". I then rolled it back to the original Media Player for
now (Version 4.10.9999) Media Player 2. DOS name: MDPLAYER.EXE. Does having
a different Sound card have anything to do with these 2 problems? The Sound
card is: "Advance Sound".

You're confusing Shockwave Player and Flash Player.

Have you done what I suggested in my previous reply?

PA. Bear,

I went to the link, and all it told was things about flash. I guess none is
installed on my the other machine. When I went to it on my large computer,
it said 9.0 Flashplayer is installed.

I guess that no flashplayer is on that old machine. Now what?

May as well take the latest version offered at that site, which
currently is Adobe Flash Player v.9.0.115.0. It came in quick &
painlessly for me, even on a Dial-Up 56K modem.

PA. Bear,

I tried that, it said that when the movie or picture was at the top, the
download was complete. All that showed up was a small square of about 3
colors. no picture. Is it really complete or not. How do I find out?

You have to wait for that small square to turn into a picture. It takes
not much more than five minutes. Follow the instructions there lower on
the screen, especially to close all other open windows & to click "Yes"
at a certain requestor.

I did a reboot afterwards even though not asked, because I had a
Wininit.ini. After the reboot, that will be renamed to Wininit.bak. Here
is mine...

[Rename]

PCR,

I tried again and this time, I got the installing page that I did not get
before. I clicked yes and got a few more flash across the screen. I never
got the picture and instead I got the IEXPLORE illegal operation pop up. I
clicked close. I then got the small pop up telling me that I had to restart
my computer because of an I Explorer error. I then restarted and when the
computer started I got the BSOD and I pressed the enter key. I got my
Windows Screen back. I then reconnected and went up to the Flash Player Page
and it said I have Flash Player v9. something. That problem solved. So now I
still cannot get the Adobe 6.0.1 to work, every time I try, I get the
illegal operation pop up. The version I have on the machine now is: 3.02. It
was on the Windows Office 97 Professional Disk Where do I get an Adobe
Reader later than the 3.02 and earlier than the 6.01 that will work on this
old machine?

:Sunny,

I tried that and all that came up for the 98SE was the Adobr 6.01. I went to
the Old Versions website and that machine did not do it. I did the 3 finger
solute and it said it was not responding. I tried several times and the same
thing happened. I did a restart every time. That machine is on dial up I have
a question, if I try ro download it to the PC that is hooked up to the DSL,
can I download it to the desk top and burn it to a disk, and try to install
it from there?

I disabled my killfile for reasons irrelevant to this post, but
it sure is nice to see you are still around giving the group
something to do!

Sounds like it came in, even though there was a crash of IE at the very
end.

(a) Open Explorer to... C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files.
(b) In the R-pane, D-click... "Shockwave Flash Object".
(c) Click the Version tab.
(Should show... v.9,0,115,0)

If you get more IE crashes like that, maybe start a new thread on it. I
used to get unexplainable IE crashes to the IE Error Report Tool myself,
but they seem to have gone away more/less on their own. That could be
quite a tough one to fix otherwise! Only once the Tool reported McAfee
was doing it, but the problem went away before I ever uninstalled that &
switched to avast!.

I think you must have all the necessary Windows Updates, if the site was
not offering anything but KB913433. As far as that one, I don't have it
on my Win98SE & it isn't offered. I see what Terhune wrote-- therefore,
I hope it no longer is offered to you too. The latest critical update I
see in my IE, Help menu, About box, is the same as in yours-- Q918439.

As far as Adobe Acrobat Reader, it looks like my own version is v.4.0, &
the site Sunny has posted also offers v.6.0.1 to me. It is 15.9 MBs, & I
hesitate to try it right now (but I will some day). Maybe start a new
thread on it as PA Bear has said.

| So now I still
| cannot get the Adobe 6.0.1 to work, every time I try, I get the
| illegal operation pop up. The version I have on the machine now is:
| 3.02. It was on the Windows Office 97 Professional Disk Where do I
| get an Adobe Reader later than the 3.02 and earlier than the 6.01

I'm going to try v.6.0.1 maybe soon-- but I cannot say more until then!
