So, let me get this logic straight........

If you are a Linux user, and want to help 'spread the word' to the masses
that have never even heard of Linux, you should go to C.O.L.A., which is
filled with people already using Linux, and staunch anti-Linux people that
wouldn't use Linux if their life depended on it ?

That's like standing in front of a Ford dealer, and intercepting people
walking in and telling them...'hey, you should go check out a Ford'.

Or....telling Vista users....'You should try Vista.'

People who post to newsgroups are already aware of Linux.
Who do you think you would be spreading the word too ?

And telling users who have a problem with Vista to install Linux isn't help, nor likely to give them a good feeling about Linux.
They will go from a small issue ... to a wrecked PC.

Especially since the advocate in question would be of little assistance besides saying "insert the CD".

A better analogy for what Alias does is telling people approaching a Ford dealership to buy a refrigerator.

Why do Linux users need to spread the word ?
It's part of what makes linux so lame.
Looks degrading ... makes it seem like an act of desperation.

Your premise is false so your rhetorical question is absurd. If you open
Windows Fail or Windows Dead Fail, you will notice a little thing
misnamed "Microsoft Communities".

> And telling users who have a problem with Vista to install Linux isn't help, nor likely to give them a good feeling about Linux.

Again, a false premise leading a supercilious opinion masked as a fact.

> Especially since the advocate in question would be of little assistance besides saying "insert the CD".

Um, if indeed you have run Ubuntu, you would have noticed what you get
when open FF for the first time and you would notice that there is a
Help icon on the panel. Just because someone hears about Ubuntu from me,
doesn't make me responsible for them or their obligatory guru.

> A better analogy for what Alias does is telling people approaching a Ford dealership to buy a refrigerator.

Denigrating my persona with ill informed lies does nothing for your
argument.

> Why do Linux users need to spread the word ?

To let people know about it, of course. Linux can't afford Seinfeld.

No, it's part of your brain that is awash with FUD.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and all that jazz.

You post that ubuntu garbage in here to stir up Frank and anyone else who will respond to you.

That's the only reason.

Like how you called Windows Mail , Windows Fail.

Since you can't actually discuss software cause you know ziltch, you try silly , immature , insult baiting games.

It's a stupid crusade anyhow...proven by Linux's poor Desktop usage numbers.

It shows that you irritate more than inform.

I use Suse , but I don't link to it.

It kicked ubuntu off one of my partitions...though I still have kubuntu.
But I rarely use kubuntu due to KDE4's stability on Suse 11

I would go post Suse links in the ubuntu group ... but I'm over 15.

Oops...my bad.

KDE is the default display manager/program set interfaced by the user in Suse and kubuntu.

You probably use gnome.

they are often abbreviated kdm/gdm.

Write that down.

I beg to differ.

99% of the people posting thru the MS web page have absolutely no clue
that they are not using a web forum.

Plus, all the *other* web 'forums' that are nothing more than shells to
newsgroups.

Go ask 100 random people 'What is Usenet'.....99 people will most likely
say 'Use-what ?'

<SNIP>

> Why do Linux users need to spread the word ?

Why do people tell others of any product they like ?

Nowadays, 80% of people think that 'Windows' is a computer, that IE *IS*
the Internet, and have never heard of FTP, IRC, or Usenet.

I beg to agree with you then :)

Whenever I get an older machine at work that is trashed and the legal
Windows CD cannot be found I have installed Debian or Ubuntu (Bit less
work for me setting up if the hardware is good enough) and leave the
user to get on with it. They do, and can still use our Windows terminal
server etc if they have to. Suffice to say that apart from a few quirks
due to poorly written web pages etc is is close enough to threaten
Windows, all that is required is for a few people to get used to the
different appearance and what icons do which.

Linus is able to communicate well with what's already there (XP or
Server3002) whereas Vista causes problems both ways.

If I wanted to switch any machine to Vista the only sensible thing for
me to do would be all new Vista and 2008 machines, or spend maybe weeks
- ongoing - sorting out glitches.

I certainly don't want to Microsoft lose out, they are after all earning
lots of money for their employees (who are real people) and for the
country as a whole, but I think they need to be aware that their pricing
and OS / Hardware redundancy policy may well be pushing more and more
to adopt some alternative. This is especially true as the US financial
situation worsens and even quite large corporations try to limit
expenditure.

Yeah, MS sure picked the wrong time to push out an OS that also requires
buying new hardware. Really stupid.

This is no debate.
You would need to smoke less pot to debate me.

But don't stop smoking pot.
You'd probably notice just how bad ubuntu really is.

If I get real drunk, I sometimes consider getting a Mac.
Just can't seem to hold enough liquor to finalize the purchase.

And that 80 % who have never heard of Usenet would hardly be able to follow
a link...burn an .iso, and install ubuntu.
You want people to be stupid clowns in one instance...but capable in other
instances.

Would they know whether to download 32-bit, or 64-bit ?
The full DVD, or the live-CD ? <----for other Linux distros

I mean...if 80% are that unaware, then spreading the word will only end up
with people installing an ubuntu .pdf ... wondering why when they double
click on it, it doesn't install...just tells them they need Adobe Reader
