Ehh? I'm sorry but earlier this year I did a clean reinstall on this
computer of both windows and Ubuntu when the new version of Ubuntu came
out. Perfect time to do so as Windows needed a cleanup and I prefer to
upgrade Ubuntu (or any OS for that matter) via clean installs rather than
in-place upgrades.

And honestly I have to tell you that it took significantly longer to
install XP and upgrade it to the appropriate service pack level than it
took to setup Ubuntu. Oh and that didn't include Microsoft office as I
had no need to install it.

And as far as the better hardware support goes...XP doesn't recognize
over half my onboard peripherals out of the box while Ubuntu does. I
actually had to use Ubuntu to download ethernet drivers for XP as XP
didn't even recognize my onboard ethernet.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not going to say that there isn't hardware
that is not supported by linux. There is. Matter of fact, I have a USB
Headset sitting right next to me that has piss-poor linux support. I
don't even bother using it under Linux. It works mostly but the volume
controls for it are buggy for some reason.

Then again, even under windows it requires special drivers from the
manufacturer, which are not 100% stable, to actually work right.
Definitely never buying from that manufacturer again regardless of OS.

But I will say this, when linux *does* support hardware, it generally
supports it instantly and out of the box without any hassle...unlike XP
where I need to track down a whole bunch of drivers first. And when linux
doesn't support hardware then it is generally limited to one particular
manufacturer and there usually are other manufacturers that are supported
with equivalent products. Printers for example, Cannon support is
pathetic so guess what! I just buy HP instead...Cannon's loss, HP's gain.

So really, unless you have something exotic that only one guy makes and
only makes for windows there normally aren't any problems.

I do fully agree with you about games though. That is one thing that
still annoys me, particularly since games are relatively easy to write
cross-platform when compared to GUI heavy applications. That is one area
that I hope will improve with the future, but for now, it is the pretty
much only reason why I dual boot windows at home.

Whatever "comes" on the disk I BOUGHT is part of the OS.
Notice I paid $35 for it with a book.
That puts me in the 7% bracket of linux users that actually part with their
money for software : D
They should mail me an award or certificate or something !

35 bucks? Man you got a long way to catch up to me. =)

That said, on the prior update statement, why is it by the way that
people like you get their panties all tied up into a bunch when an OS
like Ubuntu has updates?

Why the hell would it NOT have updates? It changes over time. It is being
maintained. Things are added / changed....why is this bad thing?

No actual linux user would ever claim that Linux doesn't have updates. So
why is it that windows users expect it not to?

Stop looking at my panties !
And they aren't in a wad...it was simply an observation.
People like me ?
You know me ? A neighbor of mine ?
Stick to yakking about software.
From the "look" of ubuntu...200 + MB of updates seems a bit larger than the
whole OS should be.

It's something that comes up very frequently in this OS about people who
try out Ubuntu. "GASP!!!! It had UPDATES!! OH NO!! The sky is falling!"
type responses ya know =)

That said, there probably was at least one open office update in
there. That's easy 50-80 megs for a complete OO update. OO is rather
large....

If there was a kernel update, easily another 20-30 megs. Now that is
definitely an OS Update!

Restricted driver modules update, if there was one, also isn't exactly
small.

The one thing about Ubuntu and linux is that they evolve very rapidly. I
mean, we are only about 4 months away from the next Ubuntu
release....that'll be a much larger update than 200 megs! :)

I don't really see that as a bad thing.

I do.
Which new windows manager will it use this time?
Everything else should be up to date anyway.

I clearly said it was a P3 and I have an 8mbps connection, and downloads
took hours.

Indeed. As for the Linux players, I always preferred XMMS anyway, since I
loathe KDE. As for a replacement for WMP I like Quintessential Player.
Stable as hell, and uses less resources than WMP and Winamp.

And what is bad about it? Why would you prefer to use a stagnant OS that
isn't being developed and improved?

The same exact window manager it has been using since day frigging one:
Gnome.

First off, I was answering dennis' question. I'm aware you only had a P3.
=)

Secondly, download speed has VERY little do to with the OS now doesn't
it? I mean, do you go blame vista if a website has a slow download speed?
If you blame Ubuntu in such a case, you need to blame Vista too..else
you're being a hypocrite.

Or, you might just realize that your download speed has exceedingly
little to do with the OS you're using and pretty much everything to do
with your internet connection, server you are connecting to and routers
that are in between.

So if you are experiencing slow downloads via your 8mpbs connection, you
could have simply changed the server you're downloading updates from to a
less busy one. Yes, it's possible and you don't even need a command line
to do it!
