You now need to find out if this is a hardware problem
or a Windows problem. Reboot the machine into the
BIOS, then test the keyboard again. If it works then you
have a Windows problem. If it does not work then you
have a hardware problem.

If you don't remember how to get into the BIOS setup
program, check the motherboard manual that came with
your PC.

I suspect that you have a problem with your USB driver.
To confirm it, you need to borrow a PS/2 keyboard. It
has a round plug with 5 pins. Does it work in the BIOS
and in Windows?

Yes. If two different PS/2 keyboards both don't work, then the port is
probably FUBAR. Switch to USB.

keyboard still doesnt work, no keyboard listed in device manager.

does the keyboard work on a different machine?
if you have a 'known good' keyboard, try it both in the PS2 port and with
the USB adapter.

You got an adapter to convert a PS/2 cable to USB? I don't think it usually
work that way. The other way, yes, but not the way you describe. You need a
keyboard that has native USB connection.

If I understand correctly, I'm using a keyboard cable(
aka db9, db11, etc), connected through a usb converter.

That's what I thought you said, and it's my recollection, though I may be
wrong, that PS/2 converted to USB doesn't often work, whereas USB to PS/2 is
OK. While that may be a misconception on my part, it sticks in my brain. I
would try to at least borrow a USB keyboard to test.

Another thing that occurs to me as a vague possibility is to check to make
sure the PS/2 port isn't somehow disabled in BIOS.

I don't remember ever seeing a PS2 to USB KB converter.
I think I saw one for a mouse, but could never make it work.
I have a drawer full of USB>PS2 converters.
I even have a few old AT style KB to PS2 adapters.
As cheap as keyboards are, having a spare would be a good investment.
