KB898458???

L.

Giving system to non-profit org.
Reformatted HD and reinstalled winXP(original).
Have had all kinds of problem reinstalling on this older Compaq 8000z.
(update.exe-application errors, Windows Service Pack Setup problems, etc.
etc.) using Compaq 3-disk recovery set. :(
Finally got winxp installed.
D/l and installed all critical updates, etc. + SP1.
The only update not installing, even though system says it has is KB898458.
Keeps popping up on update.

Set auto update to d/l but allow me to install.
Now 1/2 way through install of SP2 keep getting error that "the data is
invalid".
When I go back to auto d/l it states that SP2 is downloaded and ready to
install.

I was getting several driver error msg so I've unplugged/disconnected
everything except one cd-rom and my wireless lan card.

any suggestions?

Firstly, the subject line of your post has a knowledgebase article number,
Here is that KB898458 article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898458/en-us
I'm trying to discern its relevence to a formatted setup?

Second, you typed: "reinstalled winXP(original)."
But then you report you're "using Compaq 3-disk recovery set".
Your post is convoluted, so we will jump to the obvious clue -
You say you are getting "several driver error msg".

The 3 disc Compaq recovery set is a snapshot of the configuration
of the PC in it's original state when it left the factory, "as was" when
you purchased it.
If you have changed any of the hardware since, then that will explain
the problems and driver errors you are receiving.
For the recovery discs to be able to reset as original, then the hardware
configuration has to be as original.
The next clue being you say you have "disconnected everything except
one cd-rom and my wireless lan card"
I doubt very much that a wireless lan card was part of the original
hardware configuration of that particular Compaq, so that will be causing
additional problems when trying to use the recovery discs.

Do you have a valid XP installation disc - Not the compaq recovery discs
but a Microsoft WindowsXP installation disk?

1. Format & reinstall Windows and make certain the Windows Firewall is
enabled.

2. Immediately install SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a

3. Install all post-SP2 critical updates via Windows Update (select CUSTOM
install; do NOT install IE7, but hide it instead).

4. Make certain Automatic Updates is enabled.

5. Install a reliable anti-virus application and manually update it.

Your anti-virus application should be configured to seek and install updates
automatically, daily, at a time when the machine is usually running and
connected to the internet. It should also be configured to run a full
system scan a few minutes after seeking/installing updates, also daily.
Anything less is simply insufficient these days.

Do NOT to anything else online until you've completed Steps 1 through 5
above!

Actually the update is;
Security update for Microsoft Windows (KB894858) size 1,002KB

I do have a couple of WinXp Disks(1x upgrade and 1x OEM) for my other
systems but I thought you can only install WinXp on one system at a time?

I've thought about unplugging the wireless card and connecting to a lan
card.
I got this system from my son and not real sure just what was originally on
it.
Have added a DVD-R, wireless card. Not sure if it had a CD-R or not.

So it was a system reset you were doing from recovery discs, not
an actual clean install of XP.
The symptoms do indeed indicate that the hardware configuration of
the PC has changed and no longer match the recovery discs settings.
You have nothing to lose by trying an overwrite (not format) install with
your upgrade XP disc, but use the key that came with the Compaq.
You will of course also need to install drivers for the hardware.

thanks. Will let you know how it came out.

Should I 'save' sp2 to HD and then run? Noticed this is not the 'normal'
sp2. large file!!

Yes, save the download to your desktop, then disable your anti-virus
applications and any other real-time protections before installing SP2.

Sigh, then don't try it if it is confusing you. Just format the drive and
hand it over to the non-profit org that you are donating it to and leave
it to them to install Linux.
Elsewhere in thread you are getting some dodgey advice about "installing"
windows etc, when you were not actually doing that but trying to reset
from a set of recovery discs that no longer match the hardware
configuration.
I'll leave you to it.

Sorry if this is frustrating anyone.
I just didn't know you could load Winxp but a different key.
Looks like that would be the easiest way to go as I'm still having problems
plus the disk I have includes sp2.

Ok here we go again.
Tried your instruction and still no go.
Keep getting error msgs. 1/2 through sp2 setup.
Either "update.exe-application error" and/or "Windows Service Pack Setup
failed"

Wondering if since the only disks I have are the 3x QuickRestore disks that
may be the problem. I do not know how this system was setup originally. I
even pulled the wireless card out of the machine as suggested.

Another suggestion was to try my Winxp OEM disk but use the key I have for
the Compaq?

Had to use the 3x QuickRestore disks as that's what winxp is on for the
Compaq.
UNLESS I can use one of my other winxp disks and use the key for Compaq?
Want to stay legal.

Have to do it tomorrow am.
Will let you know.

Thanks for all the help

If anyone is still here this is what I did over the week-end,

1. Reformatted HD and tried to load Winxp by way of 3x QuickRestore disk.
No go.
2. Reformatted and tried to load Winxp off my OEM disk using Compaq key #'s.
Took the key but again no go.
(both times system freezes ~ 1/2 through install)
3. Reformatted and loaded Win 98se and everything worked fine. ?????
4. Once 98se was up and running tried to upgrade to Winxp using my Winxp
upgrade disk and, guess what, no go!!!!

I imaging the response will be to load Win98se and be done with it but
wondering what is going on. :)

Any ideas? Had a friend tell me to replace my cd-rom and try it as he
noticed it making louder than normal (whatever that is) noices on startup.
The thing is 98se loaded fine.

Happy New Years to everyone,
L.S.

While I admire your fortitude, it sounds like the machine's ready for

Now that you have windows 98SE. Insert the XP disk.
After it autoplays, choose the last entry:

I'm beginning to think the same.
It's a Compaq 8000z with a AMD Athlon xp1500, 32 meg video, 256 meg, 80g HD.
It was running fine, with XPsp2, until a few weeks back.

The only thing the NP is going to use it for is scanning old docs to create
a data base and for backup.
So I'll keep plugging along and load 98se for them.

Still wondering why xp won't load????

Oh, well.. thanks to all for the help. May keep playing with it(learning
process) until I turn it over to them....

Did as suggested.
The screen that came up was the "Windows Upgrade Advisory" window.
Nothing about compatibility but wanted to d/l some files that may have been
upgraded since purchase of disk UNLESS that means it found nothing wrong.
