Just to add:

Installation instructions for the chipset driver:

1. Run the SETUP.EXE Program and follow on-screen instructions
2. Reboot your computer when requested.
3. After the reboot, the system requests the location of the VIAMACH.CAT file. Click
on the Browse button and go into the directory where the driver is located.
4. Select the sub-directory corresponding to your OS and click Ok.
5. Follow the rest of the on-screen instructions.


Installation instructions for the AGP driver:

Click the SETUP.EXE program, select "Install AGP 4x/133 VxD in turbo mode" or
"Install AGP 4x/133 VxD in normal mode" and follow the on-screen instructions. (I
suggest normal mode).


Installation instructions for the onboard display driver:

Run the downloaded file, bdf650en.exe
It will extract the files it contains into the folder where you run the download, so
I suggest you create a folder you can easily find, specifically for the downloaded
file.

Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, and click on the "Display" icon.
Select the "Settings" page, click the "Advanced." button. Select the "Adapter" tab,
then press the "Change" button.

Click "Next" and select "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location,
so you can select the driver you want ".
[Important : Do not select "Search for a better driver than the one your device is
using now. (Recommended)", because the previous driver wouldn't be replaced by this
new version.]

Click "Have Disk" and Browse button, and specify the path to the new driver (where
the download was extracted), then highlight ps103cnu.inf and press OK.

Click on "Next" (Note: during the operation, the system may request you to insert
the "S3 Driver Disk". If that happens, just re-enter the path where the driver is
located.)

Follow the prompts, click on Finish and restart the machine when prompted.

I did it !!!!!!!!!! It worked !!!!!! It worked itself out so well I am amazed :)

I followed each step as you said but the PC installed the new drivers all by itself , it was as if something inside knew what to do all by itself lol .

The colors and the resolution is the best its been in years !!!!

I have never been so afraid of doing something in my whole life . I owe you and those whom helped , a very big debt of gratitude , and I am sending you a virtual T-bone dinner with all the trimmings :)

If the drivers installed by themselves, then you may have cleared the way when you
removed all the display drivers (and ghosts of drivers) from Safe Mode Device
Manager, allowing the drivers to install cleanly on their own.

Just curious, did you get a chance to install the chipset drivers and all, as I had
laid it out, or did the display drivers just self-install and you left it at that,
since you already had success?

Either way, glad it is back to normal for you, and that I didn't have to drop by to
do it for you. ;-)

Hey :) I am so happy about this PC now I could burst !!!! ( oh but the mess LOL )

When I did the delete in the display area , I rebooted as you told me to , then when I rebooted in safe mode and did as you told me to , rebooted in normal mode as I come back , the screen just popped , went black and the drivers , all of them installed themselves , the PC rebooted itself again and WOW , my PC was brand new , not since I bought this in 2000 has it looked this good , I truly am happy you helped me . I love my win98 , I hate change , and this has been my friend for all this time now , and you worked a miracle for me and this trusty companion .

I will admit when I was going thru the directions as you posted , I was Praying hard , I asked Jesus to just help me , and to place His hand inside my PC and make things easy for me and to settle my rapidly beating heart , I was scared to death , and when the screen popped I just knew it was good-bye to my dear friend here , I can laugh about it now but it was a very scary situation for me . I surely learned alot over the last week here ,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart . God Bless you for helping this ol silly lady with her problem with a dear companion .
Had you had to have come by there would have been a hearty steak dinner done for you :) lol

Rod , that was a miracle for me , that he fixed my driver issue , I was so lost , he not only worked a miracle on my problem with my PC but gave me courage to go on and jump in there and try to get the issue fixed . He encouraged me to do something I would never had done on my own . And in all honesty , my self esteem is thru the ceiling ! I am so happy tonight , I have my PC back in beautiful colors and amazing resolutions , its truly brilliant !! This PC has not had this much brilliance in years :)
