Five Letter Word Game

Alfred, an ancient Saxon king of Wessex supposedly burnt the cakes he was supposed to be watching cook in the fireplace of a peasant's hovel he was hiding in from invading Danes, however he later defeated the Danes and was thereafter called Alfred the Great but that could have been Alfred the Grate.
 
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc but is also a term meaning money in colloquial English as in the saying "where there's muck there's brass".
