Hi, i've tried the solutions in the XP section to this error, but no
joy.
Anyone know what to do? Every time I click on 'check for updates' the
screen changes to 'checking for updates' then a moment later says
'windows could not search for new updates' and Error found 80070424.

if i put regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll into run, i get this error msg:
(in a RegSvr32 window) The module "wuaueng.dll" was loaded but the call
to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005.

any help much appreciated!

Try asking in the Windows Updates newsgroup.

The above explanation was for a previous Version of BITS but, there
*has* been an update for BITS since Vista came out.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159

Is BITS disabled ? It can be set to Manual and the system will update
successfully but, will not update if BITS is Disabled.
Suggest you run the BITS Repair Tool to see if that helps resolve the
issue after installing the update for it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520

0x80070005 refers to an Access Denied message. Either the file is not
present and no security descriptor can be written to it or, 3rd party
software is 'protecting' it from any changes.
Locate wuaueng.dll in WINDOWS\system32
Right click it, choose Properties
Click the Version tab
What Version level does it show ?
It should be 7.0.6000.381

What is the antivirus software and/or security software currently
installed ?

hi, thanks so much for yr response.
i've followed your links for update and repair of BITS -both processes
when ran said 'not neccessary at this time' indicating that it is up to
date and not corrupted.

Sorry but i haven't been able to find out how to check if BITS is
enabled or not. How do you do this?

wuaueng.dll in WINDOWS\system32 is version 7.0.6000.374, not the
version you stated. is that a major problem?

security is norton antivirus 2006, which came with the laptop.
thanks again

That's where the issue stems from. NAV is 'protecting' wuaeng.dll from
being updated to the latest version. And, it most likely is affecting
BITS.
I don't know how to repair BITS in Vista, *especially* with NAV installed.

>> Sorry but i haven't been able to find out how to check if BITS is
>> enabled or not. How do you do this?

Open the Services console from
Start > Run > type in

services.msc
Click OK
Click on Services and locate
Background Intelligent Transfer Service [BITS]
Double click on it to determine if it is Running and what the Startup
type is. As mentioned previously, it can be set to Manual.
See if you can stop and restart the service if it is currently running.

There is no place to manually download the latest version of the Windows
Update Agent [WUA] and the system can't access the Windows Update site,
correct ?

If the above is true than the only recourse is to completely and totally
disable NAV for now. All of it's services must be stopped, too.
Please consult the provided Help file or Symantec's web site to learn
how to accomplish this.

Then see if Internet Explorer can access Windows Update so that the
latest version of WUA can be installed. This will be done in the
background when, and if, the system can access WU.
One last thing you can try, with Internet Explorer *closed*,
open Internet Options in the Control Panel
Click the Programs tab
Click the Manage Add-ons button
Look for WUWebControl Class
Click on it to highlight it, then click the Update ActiveX button
If it succeeds, then close Internet Options and see if IE can now
access WU

REMEMBER to reenable NAV after attempting the above.

hi, and really thanks for your time,
i've turned off nav and gone into services, and stopped everything to
do with symantec. still the same bloody error code though when i check
for updates.. i'm not sure if it is nav related, as the computer ran
fine for months updating itself -WITH nav running..

BITS was already running, when i checked. it was in auto with delay
mode.

There is no wuwebcontrol class in internet properties/programs/manage
add ons, either :(

the only program that was new at the time that this started going wrong
was rainbow 6 vegas game, and daemon tools to simulate the dvd being in
all the time. both are now uninstalled.

Not sure where you obtained WUA, but last I looked it's still
at the previous version, which is already installed on your system, but
apparently not completely or properly installed.
Was it from the link here ? :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

> There is no wuwebcontrol class in internet properties/programs/manage
> add ons, either

Show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#vista

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to
WINDOWS\system32

wuweb.dll is supposed to be resident in the above subfolder
It shows in Add-ons as WUWebControl Class
If it's not present, then the system will never update successfully via
the Windows Update site.

> i'm not sure if it is nav related, as the computer ran
> fine for months updating itself -WITH nav running..

It's not now, is it ? NAV is not allowing the required Updating
files to be updated.
Since MS has not provided a manual means to download the required
Software controls and the system can not access Windows Update without
wuweb.dll being updated to the latest version ... you're stuck.

Suggest you call PSS and report this issue. Since this is security
related, e.g. not being able to install security updates, then there
should be no charge for support with this:

> Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product
> Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are
> associated with security updates.

Stick to this one issue so that the support 'person' does not get
confused and attempt to charge for support.
Just say that the system can not install the latest version of the
Windows Update Agent and no subsequent security updates can be
installed. Period. <w>

the link from where i got the WUA was

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387285.aspx (at the end of
bullet point 1)

i have shown hidden files, folders, and system as explained at the link
you provided there is still no sign of wuweb.dll ...... there is a
wuwebv.dll (160kb size) and nothing else close. In 'manage add ons',
WuWebControll Class is not visible in any of the subsections (the pull
down menu from 'show' -eg 'add-ons that have been used by internet
explorer')

if you're sure that NAV is the culprit, would an uninstall of that
program put things right again? Not that this is an ideal solution.
Otherwise I can call PSS... it's just that in my experience I expect to
be put through to a man with a script, who will start at the very
beginning and end up telling me i need to reformat my hard drive.

is there really nothing else i can do? =(

Right click wuwebv.dll, choose Properties.
What Version level is it at ?

It appears that the file name has changed in Vista. Nice that MS doesn't
inform their MVPs about this, eh ?

Vista update files:

wucltux.dll
wuauclt.exe
wuaueng.dll
wups2.dll
wuapi.dll
wudriver.dll
wups.dll
wuapp.exe
wuwebv.dll <----- Bingo

From what I've found on the net, those files should all be at
V. 7.0.6000.381 now.
Using the link you posted, it STILL points to the previous Version of
the WUA <sigh>

Suggest you see if you can totally disable NAV instead of uninstalling
it for now.
Then try registering those .dll files from an Elevated Command Prompt
Start > Search > type in

cmd
*Right* click cmd and choose ' Run as administrator '
Click through the prompts, supplying a password if one exists.
At the Command Prompt type these commands and press Enter
after *each one*:

regsvr32 wucltux.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wudriver.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuwebv.dll
exit

Restart the system with NAV still totally disabled.
Now see if IE can access Windows Update or, try the Windows Update
'thing' in Control Panel.

IF the system can not do either, than contact PSS and inform them that
you need the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent since the system
can not access Windows/Microsoft Update without it and that automatic
updating will NOT install it successfully.
The result is the system can not update. Period.
If you have any difficulty with them, please email me at
my username at gmaildotcom

Make sure that "wudriver.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try
again.

wuwebv.dll is version 7.0.600.374

You're mowst welcome. Let's see if MS support is able to get wuwebv.dll
up to the latest Version, 7.0.600.381.
'Us' MVPs have been letting MS know through our 'channels' that they
really **need** to provide some place where someone in your situation
can download the latest WUA in order to install it manually.
In fact, I've pointed them to this thread as an example of why they
really **need** to do just that.

Keep us posted and hang in there ! Do NOT let them tell you that the
only resolution is to reformat/reinstall Vista to resolve this issue.
If they do, contact me, please. Same Username but at
gmail.dot.com

After reading this conversation and the attempted fixes, I am having similar
difficulty getting Windows Updates on Vista except I am getting error code
80070490. When trying the fixes, I am also running into the same error
messages. Here's a few more details that will hopefully help resolve this
problem for myself and others (hopefully without having to reinstall)...

1. Only running AVG Anti-Virus
2. The Subinacl tool errors on
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Permissions or a subkey of
that (the DOS window is not wide enough to see the full key)
3. Windows Update history shows that all Microsoft Updates (Office, Windows
Defender, and Malicious Software Removal Tool) ARE being downloaded and
installed automatically.
4. Last Recommended Update was on 3/20/07 - KB932246 "Failed"
5. The last successful update was on 2/27/07 - KB929685 "Successful"
6. Control Panel > Programs and Features > Installed Updates shows "No
updates are installed on this computer"

Hopefully this helps get this problem resolved.

Ouch. I doubt whether SubInACL works in Vista.
Could you please post a section of the WindowsUpdate.log by going to
Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log
Click OK

If possible, locate a section of the log from around 3/20/07.
If not, start at the bottom and work your way up to a section that shows
an ERROR, WARNING, or FATAL. Then copy&paste that along with 30 or so
*preceding* lines into your reply, please.

Actually, SubInACL DOES work in Vista - at least it appears to do something.
I had tried that due to the information posted in this topic
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...&tid=1f153ed7-8081-4715-a18a-fbf64f9a0012&p=1

I found the present topic by typing "windows update agent installer
encountered
unrecoverable error" into Google - which is the error I got when I tried to
install it.

My 1166 KB log file only goes back to Sept. 6. Here are the log file lines
from this evening turning on the computer, then manually checking for

More symptoms...

1. Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off
accesses the hard drive for a while - but eventually shows nothing.

2. I went to try to manually download and install a few Vista Updates such
as KB938194 and KB938979. I get an error with the Windows Update Standalone
Installer "The update does not apply to your system."

A little background on the computer...

1. Gateway laptop, with Vista OEM from the factory.
2. Never any spyware or virus issues.

IF SubInACL works with Vista then why is it erring on the reg subkey you
previously posted ?
NOTE: Vista is not installed here and no such subkey to check

I'll start with the last error code and work back up in the log:

0x80070490 E_PROP_ID_UNSUPPORTED
Permission denied / [Problem initializing or using session variables] or
Element not found

0x80244004 SUS_E_PT_SOAPCLIENT_CONNECT
failed connecting to server

0x80072ef1 ERROR_INTERNET_OPERATION_CANCELLED

0x8024000c SUS_E_NOOP
no operation is needed

The last 3 errors were resolved. This one is what's preventing *some*
updates from being offered :

2007-09-18 19:10:24:294 1048 980 Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80070490:
EvaluateApplicability failed in CCbs::EvaluateApplicability
2007-09-18 19:10:24:295 1048 980 Setup WARNING: CBS EvaluateApplicability
returned error, error = 0x80070490
2007-09-18 19:10:24:295 1048 980 Setup FATAL: Applicability evaluation

"WUClient-SelfUpdate-ActiveX~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~7.0.6000.381" failed,
error = 0x80070490

I don't *think* it's an ACL issue, rather, it's a communication issue
due to some files not being registered properly.
> Element not found

Open an *Elevated* Command Prompt by right clicking cmd and choosing
'Run as administrator', stop the WU Service, and then register these
files pressing Enter after each command
NOTE: The net stop command may not be applicable in Vista. If so, then
do this first:
> To stop the Windows Update service
>
> You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
> 1. Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel,
> clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools.
> 2. Double-click Services. If you are prompted for an administrator password or
> confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
> 3. Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Stop.

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltux.dll
regsvr32 wudriver.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuwebv.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Restart the system and see if it can update now.

All worked except for wudriver.dll. I get the error message...

"The module "wudriver.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer
was not found. Make sure that "wudriver.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and
then try again."

I checked the System32 folder and the file is there and has the same file
date (11/2/2006) as the other files.

I tried unregistering that DLL (suffixed with /u) thinking I might be
successful at registering the file again - I got the same error message from
the DllUnregisterServer.

On another issue, SubInACL went through all the motions as I've seen it do
on XP - maybe it just *looked* like it works on Vista.

RESULT:

reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty
Delete the registry value StoreDirty (Yes/No)? y
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

A search of the registry shows that in fact, the key value does not exist.
Problem still exists. Boy I'm sure hoping whatever fixes the WindowsUpdate
issue fixes these other issues too.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I thought I would be creative and try replacing all 7 DLLs and 3 EXEs related
to wu* located in the System32 folder with versions from a working Vista
installation with file dates 8/23/07. The result was Windows Updates shows a
nearly blank box. Registering the wudriver.dll file produced the same error
as before.
