  1. XP, which "died" April 8, 2014 still has a user base of more than 7% Source: https://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0 Look at Vista, way down at 0.72%. I think it died years ago. That was the only version of Windows up through 7 that I never ran. I even used ME for several years!
  2. Hah, when I turned 65 half my brain decided it had worked long enough. My husband and I say that on a good day between us, we have one functioning brain! I write everything down but since my husband and I are the only people with access to the computers (we have no children and hence no grandchildren), written down notes are safe. When we travel, cryptic notes are placed on a note card that I keep on me. I wipe all the usernames and saved passwords on the netbook I travel with so if it gets lost or stolen, someone can see where I go and perhaps know that on 98% of the forums I am plodr but they haven't a clue as to what the nonsense, all different passwords might be.
  3. I think LastPass has been patched https://threatpost.com/lastpass-fixes-ormandy-rce-bug-two-outstanding-vulnerabilities-remain/124471/ https://blog.lastpass.com/2017/03/important-security-updates-for-our-users.html/ Note: I don't use any password managers.
  4. I saw this http://www.infoworld.com/article/3181497/microsoft-windows/confirmed-windows-10-update-kb-4013429-breaks-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2011.html while searching to see what the update involves. Reading down it looks like the Big Bundle, which I don't install (Win 7) breaks things in 7 and 8.1 too. Perhaps someday, MS will learn that a massive bundled update is not the smartest move.
  5. I use Search Everything but I've now also added Agent Ransack too. https://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack
  6. I don't need to print from linux on my android tablets. (We currently have 5 printers in the house so I don't plan on buying a 6th cloud-enabled printer). I can copy to a USB stick and print from a different computer.
  7. We still have XP and 2K systems in the house. They don't go on the internet but have printers hooked up and still work well for our purposes. I plan to do the same with the Win 7 desktops. The netbooks, I'll probably test a few linux distros in late 2019 to decide what to install to surf safely. I have no plans to run Windows beyond version 7.
  8. I follow Woody Leonard https://www.askwoody.com/2017/looks-like-kb-2952664-for-win7-and-kb-2976978-win-8-1-are-back/ is KB2952664 optional and unchecked?
  9. peterr, I have always been a Mozilla person. In Windows and linux, I used Firefox and now I'm using Palemoon and Cyberfox. One distro I like has SeaMonkey so I use that. I briefly installed Chrome in Windows and then used Revo to uninstall. I just don't like it. As far as Android, I use the AdBlockPlus browser (I don't want to see google ads which you can't block in Chrome). I'm also trying Brave browser which I read was very good.
  10. So the 855 worked the same as a 655? And was it labelled B500 too?
  11. Toshiba's site says this The computer can't be used at all until the password is supplied. It is possible someone has set a UEFI/BIOS password. It is unlikely for this situation to occur without manually setting a password. Obtain the UEFI/BIOS password if possible. There is no way to reset a UEFI/BIOS password except by an Authorized TOSHIBA Service Center. I found these by putting in a Philly zip code: Laptop Service Center 35 LaCrue Avenue, Suite 6 Glen Mills, PA 19342 610-521-6100 Compuworld 121 West City Avenue Bala Cynwyd PA 19004 610-660-0620 If the laptop is still under warranty, perhaps he can call and find out the best way to proceed.
  12. I did this extensively recording all my cassette tapes to the computer using Audacity. Then I donated my tapes to be sold at my Church's flea market. (I think I used Windows 2K to do this; if not that, then XP. I have 2 towers on top of each other so I don't remember which tower I plugged the cord into.) I used a male to male 3.5mm cord. One end went into the cassette player and the other into the headset jack. I started record in Audacity then I turned on the cassette player. When the song or radio show was over, I stopped the player and Audacity. Later I cleaned up to remove dead air at the beginning and end of the recordings.
  13. I'd NEVER do a self-drive through the centre of Australia! A guided tour for me all the time.
  14. I spent a night in Coober Pedy on a different camping trip through Alice Springs and up to Darwin. (That trip was in June or July so we had "winter" temps).
  15. Crikey, those are Northern Queensland temps! In the 70's I went on a camping trip across the Nullarbor with a group of school girls. I didn't teach at North Sydney Girls but one of my friends did and allowed a few of us teaching at other high schools to come along as chaperones. One day we went to see a gold mine. The temps were about 43.9°. That was the hottest I think I've ever been. You have my sympathy! The hottest day here was July 22 2011. It was 105° in my part of PA. (central eastern) It was so hot, we get the humidity along with it too, that it was even hard to breathe.
  16. I saw this and had to chuckle.
  17. I searched for <SessionEnv> instead of the dll. It has to do with Remote Desktop. Look at the service and perhaps changing it will remove the error http://www.computerstepbystep.com/remote_desktop_configuration.html I just checked my 64 bit netbook. I have the service, though I have NEVER done anything using remote desktop. I think it is included so tech support can help. According to this http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/ Manual is the default. I have that but you can tweak it to disabled.
  18. I'm in PA too and have had no problem with gmail nor searches using google.
  19. I have Comcast but don't use it as my home page. I also don't run Win 10. So I don't use Edge and I refuse to install Chrome on any Windows computers. It is on my Android tablets but I don't use it there either.
  20. We enjoyed a day in my part of Pennsylvania yesterday that tied a record from 1913. It was 61° F/16°C. It was something to look forward to in the dead of winter here. I'm too old anymore to deal well with extremes in temperature.
  21. Great. There are currently more Win 7 users than Win 10 users so we have to make sure we keep our computers working through January 2020! We have four Windows 7 computers in our home and I'm tech support for my husband. I'm in charge of keeping them all updated, patched and running as smooth as possible.
  22. I don't know Bill but I'm always up for cake! Happy Birthday!
  23. Hi, Rustys.
  24. I stopped using them years ago. Now it appears there is a 60 day trial. I tend to NOT use utilities that have so many tools. I only used the cleaner part.
  25. When the cake decorator takes your request literally!
