  8. Welcome to the site.
  9. You don't need any added protection, but, I am one that believes that one can never be too protected. I use a hardware firewall as well as Windows firewall. The only thing you need to know is make sure the company you colo with has good security. You don't want anyone to have access to your server except the network people. I prefer using a local company so I have physical access to the server when I need it. In case of a hardware failure it's always better to be able to drive a few miles with the replacements then to ship it off somewhere. Downtime is held to a minimum.
  10. What is a Server Core installation? The Server Core installation option is a new option that you can use for installing Windows Server 2008. A Server Core installation provides a minimal environment for running specific server roles, which reduces the maintenance and management requirements and the attack surface for those server roles. A server running a Server Core installation supports the following server roles: Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) DHCP Server DNS Server File Services Hyper-V Print Services Streaming Media Services Web Server (IIS) To accomplish this, the Server Core installation option installs only the subset of the binary files that are required by the supported server roles. For example, the Explorer shell is not installed as part of a Server Core installation. Instead, the default user interface for a server running a Server Core installation is the command prompt. Whats new in the Server Core installation option? The Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008 requires initial configuration at a command prompt. A Server Core installation does not include the traditional full graphical user interface. Once you have configured the server, you can manage it locally at a command prompt or remotely using a Terminal Server connection. You can also manage the server remotely using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) or command-line tools that support remote use. Who should use this guide? The target audience for the Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008 includes: IT planners and analysts who are technically evaluating the product. Enterprise IT planners and designers for organizations. IT professionals who are managing the AD DS, AD LDS, DHCP Server, DNS Server, File Services, Print Services, Streaming Media Services, and Web Server (IIS) roles. 11. Basic GUI configuration utility for Windows Server Core 2008 If have Windows Server 2008 core only installed this is a nice utility to configure many of the options. As you know the only way to configure the Windows2008 core is by command line. This tool makes some of the tasks easier. Features: Product Activation Configuration of display resolution Clock and time zone configuration Remote Desktop configuration Management of local user accounts (creation, deletion, group membership, passwords) Firewall configuration WinRM configuration IP configuration Computer name and domain/workgroup membership Installation of Server Core features/roles DCPROMO wizard (3 scenarios supported) Windows Server Backup performance configuration Automatic Updates configuration Windows 2008 Server Core Configurator - Release: Core Configurator 1.1
  12. The only thing I could suggest is to check the permissions on the file store. Windows Servers have a modify permission and it seems to override write permissions when changing files.
  13. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers experience with the operating system. 14. Microsoft continuously improves the Windows Vista Operating System by providing ongoing updates while working with software and hardware vendors to help them to deliver improved compatibility, reliability and performance. These updates are provided to customers directly by our hardware and software partners, as well as from Microsoft in the form of hotfixes distributed on a regular basis using Windows Update. Updates to Windows are also delivered directly to some affected customers and preinstalled by PC manufacturers. This document describes many of the notable changes in Windows Vista SP1. For additional information about the changes in SP1, please see the forthcoming Knowledge Base (KB) article 936332, which is a compendium of all prior KB articles documenting updates to Windows Vista. Many of these updates are already publicly available and have been released via the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update. All of these updates are included in Windows Vista SP1. The full list of these updates can be read in Hotfixes and Security Updates included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1. Read the document at microsoft.com
  15. Windows 2008 Server Core uses the SCregEdit.wsf script found in C:\Windows\System32 to configure Terminal Services (TS) behavior. TS is the method of remote controlling your Server Core system through Remote Desktop (RDP). The /AR setting applies to Windows Vista/2008 machines. If you want to allow Terminal Services connections to the Windows 2008 server from Windows XP machines, you have to use the /CS switch.
  16. Which ever you choose will work. You could install either x86 64 or x86 32.
  17. You can't run or install x64 software in a 32bit environment. Only way to install is make the dvd bootable. I have burned every build of Windows 2008 while beta testing and not once did any of them not boot. You must have a bad iso.
  18. Encryption should be set by default. I know when I connect to my server it lets me know the connection is secure.

  23. Post a reply to this thread to introduce yourself to the community. For those that don't know I am Bob the owner of this site. I've been running Windows Servers for 10 years after migrating from Redhat and FreeBSD. During that time I have written articles and tutorials to share my knowledge. I opened this forum so that all of us can share what we know.
