  1. you have installed the printer on a print server running windows server 2kX correct? So, that is a print server with its IP address. Connect to the user's remote session, open control panel > add printer then select NETWORK PRINTER and under "ADDRESS" type: \\your_server's_ip_address\printer name if you enabled printer publishing, you can search it trought the AD. Connect to it and try to print again. Let me know if you have the same problem.
  2. I think that one of the biggest problem is recommendation. There are many sys / net admins that haven't enough competences, but they keep working!
  3. have you already tried to map the printer directly to the TS session instead of redirect it?
  4. Hi all, I'd like to share my experience and what I'm feeling now. I live in Switzerland and I'm 20. I'm almost finished with the school and as I ever said, I want to find a job. The school I've done it's an apprenticeship (I know in many countries there's not this kind of school), anyway it's like a stage but it's 4 years long. You have to go to school and work (usually 2 weeks at school and 2 at work). Finding a job it's not an easy task, it seems like if you haven't a bachelor or master you are almost nobody. This (for me) doesn't make sense... It's hard to show what you can REALLY do, I know many people who are able to sell themselves also if they're not what they try to appear. I tought: "ok, I could go to the university", here in Switzerland we have some good places where you can study, but honestly for IT there's not too much. To be honest, there're many possibilities for programmers, but not for system / network administrators. I found the UNC (university of north Carolina) but it's SOOOOOOOO EXPENSIVE for strangers! It's almost 40'000$ per year! During these 4 years, I studied for some certification, and I took the exam for Comptia Network + and in the next 4 months I want to take the Certified Ethical Hacker certification. I know what I can do and where I work they try to convince me to stay with them, but after 4 years I want to change... also outside the Switzerland, but I have to find some company who want to test me and my abilities! So... why this topic? Well... just to know if you have / had the same problem where you live! Also, if you have any suggestion regarding my future, it will be much appreciated!
  5. I did the same thing at school years ago with WinSrv 2k and 2k3, no problems... I don't think you will experience problems, maybe the speed could be a problem but this depends on your hardware :) Let me know if you need further help!
  6. Hi ricksd, Welcome to Free PC Help Forum. Enjoy your stay!
  7. Hi, I don't know your knowledge with WinSrv, so I suggest you to read this guide: http://www.petri.co.il/how-to-install-windows-server-2008-step-by-step.htm Let me know if this helps.
  8. mhhhh so if you try the advanced search it dosn't return any result? Remember... you can't search into files from the text box "search" on the right... I'm from Ticino... a bit far away from you :D
  9. You never know :P Months ago I found a person which told me that his website was hacked almost every day. After further investigation I understood he putted "everyone" under domain admins and just to be sure everything worked fine... he putted his website in his LAN not in DMZ... So... I can believe everything :) Have a nice day :)
  10. Hi, The only problem you could have, regards the version of Windows 7. You need at least the PROFESSIONAL version to be able to join the domain (which is mandatory if you plan to use domain's accounts). Be sure to set up the client's firewall if needed, then there's nothing else you have to do. Joining a domain is exactly the same of Windows XP. Let me know if you need further help.
  11. Do you want to restrict windows updates installation except for administrator, right? From what I know, this is not possible. You can deploy updates via WSUS / SMS but domain admins are still able to install them. Excuse me... but HOW MANY domain admins do you have? "normal" users shouldn't be on that group...
  12. sorry... I didn't see your post...
  13. Hello fellow countryman :) First of all I suggest you to install the WINDOWS INDEX SERVICE ROLE (server manager > server roles > add role) this will increase the speed of your research. Then you should be able to resolve your issue by clicking on TOOL (in explorer, inside your drive path, let's say C:\) then FOLDER OPTIONS and then click on the tab SEARCH, on the top you have 3 radio buttons, select the first or the second... this choice is up to you :) Let me know if this resolves your problem. (now I don't have a server with me... so I can't assure these steps are correct... give it a try :) ) ps: where are you from exactly?
  14. Excuse me, I don't understand you very well... I try to explain once again: 1) turn on your server 2) you should see "press ctrl + alt + delete to logon" do it. 3) now you can have two scenarios: 3 a) you should see the administator account and UNDER you should see a button called "SWITCH USER", if so CLIK ON THIS BUTTON 3 B) you should see the administrator account and on the right the "OTHER USER" account, if so click on OTHER USER 4) Now you have two text boxes, the first one is for username. IN THAT FIELD if you type you can see what you're typing (in the password's field you cannot see what are you typing). So, WRITE YOUR PASSWORD (AdMiNpW!) IN THAT TEXTBOX, by doing this, you are able to see IF THE PASSWORD IS WRITTEN CORRECTLY. Because your password has an EXCLAMATION MARK, there's the possibility that the keyboard layout is wrong so when you type "!" windows writes "\" (it's just an example), if this happen, tell me so I can help you!
  15. Hi there, First you should be sure that your keyboard layout is correct. To do this you can make an easy test: on logon page you should be able to log in as "OTHER USER". If you can do this, on the USER NAME FIELD write your password so you can be sure that is typed correctly (with different keyboard layout, the exclamation mark is not in the same place for all the keyboards). Once you are SURE the password is correct (you can see your password written correctly), retry to logon to your server. If this fails, click again on OTHER USER and as username type ADMINISTRATOR and then your password. Did you set up a domain? Because the LOCAL admin password and DOMAIN admin password are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS! Let me know if this help... anyway, strong password are important to prevent / avoid / reduce the risk of password cracking / bruteforcing. Anyway, once you can login to your server I will tell you how to remove the password enforcement policy.
  16. the only thing I can still remember is that win98 has trouble with ntlm auth: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239869 But if you alredy tried this article I have no more ideas on what the problem could be. I just suspect the problem could be on lockout policy, because if I remember right, once your win98 client fail the authentication, it's automatically "blocked". Sorry... I have no other suggestions for you...
  17. Hi there, You may have 3 solutions: First try to install DSCLIENT: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/288358 and then try again. If this doesn't work, well you have to downgrade your domain. When you install the DC it will ask you if you want to use the compatibility with older systems, you have to do that! The third solution is just an idea... maybe you can try to setup a DC running 2k3 server and set the win98 client's DNS address to this server instead of the new one. Anyway, I don't know if this helps, but take a look here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/windows-98-cannot-join-a-windows-server-2008-domain-dsforum2wiki.aspx Let me know if this help.
  18. coooommooooonn WHY I dont look everywhere?!?! Excuse me for my question... I just saw that botton -.-
  19. Let's start from NICs: NICs (network cards), are usually undervalued. You can have a RAID 5, redundant power supply and a UPS... but just one network port. This means that you will never be able to access your server anymore from a remote site. That's because I suggest you AT LEAST 2 port. THe second advantage to have more port is the speed. With a virtualized environment you can build a BOND (or aggregate or team or whatever you want), in other words you can MERGE two interfaces, this improve network performance and fault tolerance, if you have a trouble with a port or a cable, your system will be able to work. To be honest, for a BOND you have to consider also a programmable switch because usually you have to set up a BOND also in the switch (this because on your network you will have ONE virtual connection made of 2 phisical link), anyway in the worst scenario, you can make a bond and you switch should be smart enough to implement the STP (spanning tree protocol) or loop protector (to avoid network loop). This scenario will remove the advantage about the improvement of network performance, but you still have redundancy! Now, if you don't want / need the fault tolerance, I'm sure you don't have to put your webserver on the same network of your other deployment server, it's just a security matter! You should create a DMZ on your router / firewall where you will phisically attach your webserver, then on the other port you will connect your others servers to your home network. Remember: in a virtualized environment, server can share every resource! Now let's talk about ram / hard drives: Plugging in a hard disk in a server is easier than in a workstation! There are some things you have to care about, for example the SPEED, all the harddrive must have the same speed (usually 10k but there are also 7.5k and 15 or 20k and so on), of course the interface must be the same, usually you have a SAS drive. For the dimension is not so easy, usually a server has more than one hard drive to protect you from failures (HARDWARE FAILURES). Let's make an example: You buy 2 HD (2 x 72 gb), in the array configurator (which is a program that starts before windows or Xen or whatever you are using) you configure a RAID 1 array made of DISK 1 and 2. This array will be seen by the OS you are going to install as a single disk of 72GB, but every bit is syncronized on each disk, if you break one phisical disk you still have your data on the other! Then you have 3 HD (3 x 146 GB), this time you configure them as a RAID 5 array. You will have 270 GB of usuable space and still the redundancy but with more performance! Remember: once you create an array, the disk with the LOWEST space will be taken as reference! this means that if you have 2 disks (1 x 72 GB) and the other (1 x 146GB) and you set up a RAID 1, your useable space will be 72gb! I don't want to confuse you... but now the world is going to the VIRTUALIZATION and SHARED STORAGE. Virtualization is unexpensive (on your scenario), shared storage is not really expensive but of course more expensive than a local storage :) I hope this can help you... if you don't understand me ask again :)
  20. Ok, I don't think you can expect to run SQL, sharepoint and a webserver with a storage... with only 700$! I don't know where are you from, but where I live, HP is cheaper than Dell... So... right now the best solution should be the virtualization, here you can find what I think should be the MINIMAL for your scenario: CPU: Xeon (>=2.2 ghz) RAM: >=6 gb NICs: >=2 ports (1 for the DMZ where you will put your webserver) Disks: At least 3 disks for a RAID 5, the dimension is up to you... I don't know how much space do you need As you can see I didn't told you "buy a ProLiant or Equallogic", here you can find what should be ok for you... but as said... with 700$ it's quite hard to get this hardware. Anyway... be sure to understand that if you plan to publish a webserver there are others things to evaluate, for example HA, protection, performance, ... If you need more help... simply ask :)
  21. Is there a way to receive an e-mail everytime a topic is started? It's something like the "view new content" but ONLY for new topics. I receive an email for all the topics where I answered and that's fine, but I have to login to check if somebody has opened a new topic.
  22. I don't understand... what you mean by "browse for a SQL server"? You try to discover the SQL server from network or from SQL Server Management Studio? Then I don't understand what you are trying to do by creating a login to one pc (local user), you want to try to connect locally from one pc to another? Tell me: if you open the SQL server manager from a client and you put the IP in the server's field, are you able to connect to it via SQL credentials / windows auth? Sorry for all these questions but I'm not understanding what's the point...
  23. Hi, I have some questions for you: 1) Why do you want a Dell? I just wanna know if this brand is mandatory or not. 2) How much do you want to pay? 3) Because of you are a developer, are your softwares related to hardware or not? If not, you could use a free virtual solution (XenServer), you can have up to 5 virtual server and this (from my point of view) it's a great advantage because you can have multiple scenarios (for example SQL 2005 and 2008). 4) What are you using right now? This is just to know how much performant must be your server. Let me know!
  24. From what I know it's not possible without a domain... I'm not sure at 100% but... well how can SQL server authenticate users without query a domain??? So I can say I'm almost sure you can't do that without a domain :)
  25. I never tried before... but look at this linK: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961481.aspx It seems to be possible...
