USB device getting disconnected?

Hi there,

I have a HDD music player for my car that connects to my PC via USB.

However whenever I connect it to a particular port (the only one I have

free:-) it disconnects and I get a message along the lines of 'Something has

disconnected your device'

It works in a different port but that got me thinking - I have had a lot of

devices connected via USB at one time or another to the point where my

single scanner is now Scanner #3, my printer is #2 etc. etc.

Is there a way to see what has been connected to a particular USB port and

uninstall or dis-associate that particular device from that particular port?

And if I can do that when I plug my scanner back in for example how can I

ensure it is the only scanner on the system and not #5?
