My HD crashed last week on my old PC. I was not too worried about it since I

had been backing all pictures up to an external USB drive. Bought a new HP

PC with Vista Home Premium. Now when I view JPG files from the external

drive they appear with lines in them and are all jumbled up. Not all files,

but about 30% of them are like this.

Is not...

program -- tried IRfanview, Xnview, many others

memory card (SD) - tried several

camera - tried at least 3

method of download - tried USB and SD card direct in PC memory reader

Even when I put the Ext. drive on an XP laptop, the images all appear the

same now. I have copied and pasted to another drive in the same PC and even

other PCs and no difference.

A few other strange items related... all thumbnails appear okay, but when

opened they are jumbled. Sometimes the files look different - ie. one file

could be jumbled in one program, then okay in another program, sometimes even

in the same program if I log off and back in the files appear different.

I can send copies of the files if anyone is interested. Please help. I am

very concerned that 30% of all photos I have saved the past 9-10 years are

destroyed.

Thanks for your help.

Just wondering...if the bad files are on

the external USB drive and are corrupted

even when viewed from a different computer...

why do you think Vista corrupted them?

Maybe the originals could be recovered

from the old hard drive?

Sounds to me like your drive was damaged and corrupted before you

transferred the .jpg's to the external drive. If you didn't check a few of

the transferred files after you backed them up - you'll never know for

It would appear that whatever took out your main hard drive also took a shot

at your USB drive too.. I doubt very much that Vista was the culprit..

Typical fanboy response. This question has been repeatedly asked by

many people in the video group. You going to stick with your lame

answer?

I think it's Vista b/c even new photos fresh from my camera have this

problem. That takes the external HD out of the equation. The old HD is

fried and nothing can be recovered. I've tried everything and even had the

IT guy at work try his magic, but no luck.

The files were not backed up, rather they were copied from my old HD to the

external drive. Also, I do not think it's the external HD because even new

pics from two digital cameras (Sony and Canon) and two SD cards download

direct from the camera to the new PC with this problem.

Frank can't even spell f..k. Maybe because 100% of his brain is

corrupt.

Why is everyone ruling out Vista so quickly. First, the USB drive was not

connected to my old PC when it crashed and burned. Second, even when the USB

is disconnected from the new PC and I download photos direct from a camera (2

kinds) they are corrupt. These are new photos also that I just took today,

not old photos. Also, I formatted both SD cards prior to doing this test.

All responses I have received so far are just defending Vista and stating it

must be something I know it is not. Is this a help forum or an advertising

forum for Vista?

If you have an IT Guy at work, take the camera to him, attach the USB

cable, no need to load any software, copy them to his computer, see if

they are corrupt - if not, burn them to a CD/DVD.

If they are fine at his computer, then go back to your computer,

uninstall any software related to the camera, images, etc... Now,

reboot, and just connect the camera via USB, let the camera be detected,

copy the files to the hard drive, now open them from the hard drive -

are they corrupt?

Have you considered this could be a video card driver problem?

Change your video resolution to 1024x768x16bit color and see if you have

the same problem.

Just read what you have written. Nothing really points to Vista as the

culprit. It would appear, however, that the camea is a different story.

Just where or how were the SD cards formatted? Were they formatted by

the computer or by the camera? Most camera manufacturers, for instance,

recommend that the camera does the formatting of the memory card...just

to mitigate the possibility of corruption. And second, what was the route

from the memory card to the external USB drive? There are just too many

other intervening possibilities that tends to preclude Vista (or any

other OS) at this moment.

have u taken pictures today that u tried on another computer first?

if it is vista doing it make sure you can get normal pictures from the

camera on another machine. I wouldnt eliminate vista but becaues this is

the first I ever heard of this issue I surely wouldnt put all the blaim on

it untill you know for sure.

Can you view other jpg files OK? Can you download the files from one of the

cameras on another computer? Are they OK on that computer? Can you then

transfer them to the Vista computer? Are they still OK?. When

troubleshooting you have to come up with a plan to eliminate possibilities

one at a time. So far the the only possibilities you have eliminated are the

camera and the SD card, as it happens with two different cameras and SD

cards. You now have to bring another computer into play to eliminate the

computer. At this point it really does sound like a problem with USB

transfers. That is what all of the things you have tested have in common.

They have all been used for transfers to/from this computer. The first I'd

do is confirm that the USB drive, cameras, and SD cards work for read/writes

on another computer.

Isn't it disgusting!

My partner transferred all of his JPG and Ipod files to

my Vista machine because his Mac trashed his!!

They just don't make hard drives like they used to!!

Of course you had backed up with Backup Software and

restored in minutes DIDN'T YOU!!

1st of all there is a Hard DIsk in the freeze technique to restore broken

hard disks.. I know it sounds crazy but many people say it works. see here:

http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2006/01/freeze-your-hard-drive-to-recover-data.html

secondly there is a "undelete" program that can recover files even if they

have been deleted from drives.. even your camera card. This is a free one

but there are other better ones too

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

Do a check disk from the hard drive tools to see if you can fix anything

You have not yet done enough trouble shooting and "substitution" to

determine WHAT causes the problem. You are assuming it is Vista. You have

not eliminated the other possibilities or software interactions with third

party software. Until you go about trouble shooting this problem in a

systematic way you just don't know.

The fact that this seems to be a first would tell me that it is not Vista -

until proven otherwise.

Maybe you should take your camera and computer to a qualified professional

for service.

I don't think it is Vista, and I don't think your drives are corrupt.

I think it is your new PC.

I expect your external drive and your memory cards are formatted as

FAT. The FAT file system uses clusters as the unit block of disk space

to store data. The way computers map clusters on to physical sectors

of disk space vary from one computer to another. It is often settable

in the BIOS (but if you find the setting, don't change it or you will

end up not being able to access the main hard drive.)

Historically, disks were addressed using cylinder, head and sector

numbers. But because the space allocated for these numbers was not big

enough to allow for new much larger hard drives, various workarounds

and newer methods of access have been devised, which are not

compatible with each other.

I think your new computer is using a different access method and when

it attempts to access the drive, it is getting different sectors than

the original computer did. The only way to prove it would be if you

could read the drive in your old computer or a similar make and model.

The original hard drive failed but couldn't you boot the old PC using

a recovery disc like BartPE and try to read the removable?

We sell a photo image recovery software ( Flash Recovery, http://www.diskinternals.co.uk

) but I don't think that will be any help in this case.

I just replied to another post of yours saying that I thought the

problem might be a difference in the way your new PC Bios addressed

the hard drive. Now I have seen that it affects two SD cards as well.

The one thing that all 3 drives have in common, I presume, is that

they are connected by a USB interface.

Is it possible that your new computer could have a fault in the USB

hardware?

I do think it is wrong to blame Vista for this, as millions of people

are using Vista with external hard disks and memory cards without

experiencing this problem. However, the OS disk accesses are mapped to

the drive or memory card by the PC Bios / other hardware. This seems

more likely to be where the problem is.

I won't say that unless I have anything solid to prove it.

Enough people are having problems so MS came up this KB article:

A Windows Vista-based computer may stop responding if a USB camera is

connected.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939331/en-us

I don't know if it has anything to do with OP's problem but don't assume

something is free of problems just because you didn't experience it.

But that's the fanboy way, just ask newsgroup clown Frank or any of

any of the clueless knucklehead Microsoft apologists. Problem? What

problem, I don't have a problem, ergo, there is no problem. That's the

mind-set of idiots like them.

Hello all,

I am having the same problem, its really strange.

I am quick to blame vista too, but its most likely a combination of the

chipset and vista.

Any USB connected storage device reads the data as corrupted without

giving any crc errors, it will corrupt movies, jpgs and datafiles while

reading them from the disc.

The worst part is that the first time we used the new pc for photos we

moved the images off the card onto the pc before testing it out. It

corrupted the images as they were transfered and deleted them from the

source.

I tried many different recovery tools. The images of my daughters 3rd

birthday are gone. :(...

I'm going to try the suggestion of bios settings now.

Heres my specs,

Vista home prem. 64bit

I tried every variation of the bios usb settings,

Updated the bios too, no change. :(

Next thing I will try is installing xp 64 and see if I get the same

problem.

I'm also going to contact gigabyte and see if they have any ideas.
